If you’re wondering where all the classical music and arts activity disappears to in January, there’s a new arts festival in the heart of Melbourne that covers everything from visual art to circus. As for classical music, admittedly it’s easier to find events in February but Classic Melbourne has uncovered some in January such as 2Cellos at the Palais Theatre, St Kilda – (check our Calendar). The following month, don’t miss Midsumma Festival’s Harvey Milk – the Opera in Concert at the St Kilda Town Hall. These two prove that the iconic suburb offers more than just beach culture if you know where to find it!
Our hard-working Melbourne Symphony Orchestra has only a short break before going into rehearsals for February’s free concerts at the Sydney Myer Music Bowl and the popular Chinese New Year concert. But first, at the end of January there’s contemporary music with a Composer’s Award, and a performance with a Star Trek film thrown in. We think the MSO deserves a story of its own for this effort!
Or you could just go to Sydney for their annual Festival. While Classic Melbourne is combing our venues and nagging our arts providers for news of classical music during the holidays, our colleagues at www.soundslikesydney.com.au have the situation in their city covered. First up, it’s an advance look at the program. Later, expect more stories and reviews.
