Claudio Monteverdi’s amazing last opera, L’incoronazione di Poppea (Venice, 1643), explores themes of ambition, betrayal, and the moral ambiguity of power. Poppea, driven by her desire to become empress, manipulates Emperor Nero to achieve her goals, leading to a web of deception and the downfall of other characters.
