Growing up in a Fitzroy Street restaurant, I became aware that St Kilda had many people who could not afford to dine out in style, but whose needs for food and shelter were well-met by the Sacred Heart Mission just around the corner from us. It served free meals to people experiencing homelessness and social isolation and was doing it years later, when my own daughter was involved in helping through a forward-looking religious education program at the wonderful yet soon-to-close Presentation College Windsor. Recently, I caught up with the work of the Mission.
For over 35 years, Sacred Heart Mission’s Dining Hall has been at the heart of the organisation. The Dining Hall connects those who are the most vulnerable in our community with a range of services which support them to live stable and fulfilling lives. The Mission serves over 160,000 meals each year via its Dining Hall in Grey Street, St Kilda. All funds raised from this year’s Concert supports the Meals Program, run from the Dining Hall in St Kilda, which provides up to 400 nutritious meals every day of the year to people experiencing homelessness and social isolation.
Classic Melbourne can think of no better cause to support than the Mission’s outreach program. And a diverse lineup guarantees an exciting and happy concert. This year’s lineup features Joe Camilleri, Dan Sultan, Rhonda Burchmore, The Chantoozies, Libbi Gorr, Rob Snarski, Steph Tisdell, Pierce Brothers, Kiki Courtidis, The Meltdown, Billy Miller, Rebecca Barnard and The Caravan Choir – and more! These performers are generously donating their time in support of the Mission’s Meals program. And, for the 12th year, Brian Nankervis will serve as host and master of ceremonies.
The concert is on Wednesday, 23 October 2019, at the Palais Theatre in St. Kilda. Although the venue is very large, this concert is a very popular event and you should secure your tickets now!
