SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents Jaime conducts Dvořák\, Smetana & Coll
DESCRIPTION:Most of us have heard Dvořák’s Symphony No.9 From the New World. But why is it so much harder to find a concert featuring his Symphony No.7? The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra can’t figure it out — that’s why they’re presenting a live performance of this unusually neglected work. \n\n\n\n\nJust like the Ninth\, this symphony is also infused with the Czech composer’s nostalgic love of his homeland\, and its lively third movement recalls a Czech folk dance. A similarly sentimental theme runs through Smetana’s Má vlast: Vltava\, named after the Vltava River that flows across the Czech countryside. The gentle swirl of the flute marks the beginning of this picturesque river journey have you flowing with the river towards the stunning city of Prague. \nCloser to our own home\, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra has co-commissioned a new piano concerto. Be there for the Australian premiere of this new work from Spanish-born composer Francisco Coll. \n\n\n\n\nMelbourne Symphony Orchestra\nJaime Martín Conductor\nKirill Gerstein Piano\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDvořák Symphony No.7\n\nFrancisco Coll Piano Concerto*\nSmetana Má vlast: Vltava \n\n*Australian Premiere of an MSO Co-commission\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 28 May 7:30 PM\n\n\nSaturday 30 May 2:00 PM\n\n\nRunning Time1 hour 30 minutes (including interval) \n\n\n\nHamer Hall\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: $20 – $127

SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble: Inner Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Mirroring the composer’s own inner turmoil\, Franz Schubert’s stirring String Quartet No. 14\, “Death and the Maiden” has long captured the imagination of listeners with its thrilling climaxes\, tortured freneticism and darkly romantic source material. \nIn an expanded setting for chamber orchestra arranged by the formidable Gustav Mahler\, this seminal work leads a program that ventures into intimate inner worlds\, exploring shifting terrains of emotion and memory. \nOpening with John Corigliano’s tender Soliloquy — an elegy of reflection and restraint\, carrying the weight of memory while seeking solace in beauty and stillness — this performance also includes the Australian premiere of Jessie Montgomery’s Grammy Award-winning Rounds for piano and strings\, starting with a single repeating idea that spirals into intricate motion. \nIn a world premiere\, Australian composer Paul Stanhope brings lyrical depth and human vitality to his first Clarinet Concerto written in his trademark style of poetic narrative and musical invention.
