SUMMARY:Australian National Academy of Music: Sacred: Seven Last Words
DESCRIPTION:In this unique Chapel concert\, Affinity Quartet are returning to Haydn\, the widely acknowledged father of string quartet music as we know it\, and apply their craft to the meditative sections of Seven Last Words. Each is based on an expression attributed to Christ during his crucifixion\, and is bookended by a contemplative introduction and a hectic conclusion akin to an ‘earthquake’ based on Matthew 27:51: the temple curtain was torn in two from top to bottom\, the earth shook\, and the rocks split. This ‘tearing of the veil’ symbolises humanity’s sudden access to God. \nNaturally\, this work was commissioned by a priest\, who paid Haydn in a suitably symbolic way: sending him a cake which\, when cut\, was revealed to have been filled with gold coins. \nBased in Melbourne\, and originally comprising of musicians who all once graced the halls of ANAM\, Affinity Quartet have blazed their own trail internationally\, having won several competitions including the International Chamber Music Competition In 2023. They make their return to ANAM after representing Australia at Rheingau Music Festival with acclaimed violist\, composer and former ANAM Artistic Director\, Brett Dean\, where they performed string quartet compositions by both Dean and Haydn.\n\nJoseph HAYDN The Seven Last Words of Christ\, Hob. SUMMARY:Ensemble Liaison & Friends: Echoes of Vienna
DESCRIPTION:Ensemble Liaison opens its 2026 series with Echoes of Vienna.\nA program reflecting the rich musical currents that flowed through the cultural crossroads of fin-de-siècle Vienna. \nThe evening begins with Sergei Prokofiev’s spirited Overture on Hebrew Themes\, written for Russian-Jewish musicians in New York and drawing on folk melodies whose roots stretch back to Eastern Europe. The program also features the world premiere of The Drowned World by Australian composer Stuart Greenbaum\, a striking contemporary work inspired by the novel of J. G. Ballard and written for Ensemble Liaison. \nAnton Webern’s youthful Langsamer Satz reveals the composer before his radical modernism\, steeped in the lush expressive language of late-Romantic Vienna. The concert concludes with the richly lyrical Trio in D minor by Alexander Zemlinsky\, a work of sweeping Romantic intensity that was endorsed by Brahms and captures the emotional world of Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century. \nEnsemble Liaison is delighted to present this concert with their dear friend\, violinist Sophie Rowell together with the talented students of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. \nSergei Prokofiev Overture on Hebrew Themes  \nStuart Greenbaum The Drowned World (world premiere) \nAnton Webern Langsamer Satz for String Quartet (1905) \nAlexander von Zemlinsky Trio in D minor Op.3 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 09 April 2026 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: TBC. SUMMARY:Divisi: Human Instrument
DESCRIPTION:What is the voice capable of? \nThe Human Instrument is a bold concert experience exploring the full expressive range of the human voice. \nIn this program\, Divisi positions the voice not just as a vehicle for text and melody\, but as an instrument in its own right: percussive\, theatrical\, intimate\, virtuosic\, and communal. SUMMARY:The Rake Punished or Don Giovanni
DESCRIPTION:Melbourne Opera is staging a timely production of Don Giovanni (The Rake Punished) from 26 April – 3 May at the Athenaeum Theatre.  \nThis staging strikes at the heart of Don Giovanni’s narcissism and brutality\, refusing to brush over his assaults as mere elements of the dramma giocoso. Instead\, it gives voice and agency to the women he has wronged. Universally acknowledged as one of the greatest operas ever written\, this time Don Giovanni will see justice finally served. \nDirector Suzanne Chaundy will once again show her deft touch in directing the operatic stage. \n“It is a complete misreading of Mozart and Da Ponte’s intent to see Don Giovanni as a rebel hero. Only his narcissism places him in that role. This production will focus the story on the trio of powerful and vengeful women who bring Don Giovanni to justice on behalf of the many\, many women listed in the heinous catalogue of his ‘conquests’\,” says Suzanne Chaundy\, who is making her United Kingdom opera directing debut in July. \n“Justice is coming to Don Giovanni just as it caught up with recent high profile sex offenders like the former Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein\, and as many would picture justice coming to other offenders from the Epstein Files.” \nThree of Australia’s best sopranos will join forces in passionate revenge. Lee Abrahmsen (“Die Meistersinger”\, The Ring Cycle) as Donna Anna for her own assault and for the death of her father\,  Eleanor Greenwood (Turandot\, The Ring Cycle) as conflicted wife Donna Elvira\, and Soprano Rebecca Rashleigh (Herald Sun Aria Winner 2018\, The Ring Cycle) is the peasant bride Zerlina\, whom the Don attempts to seduce the night she marries Masetto. Masetto is performed by Stephen Marsh\, who has just returned from the Deutsche Oper Berlin. \nTaking on the role of Don Giovanni is international baritone Christopher Tonkin. “It certainly is an interesting time to be playing such a character as Don Giovanni. Art has always been a commentary on deeper issues and this is a very important conversation to have\,” says Christopher\, who has appeared throughout the United Kingdom\, Europe\, Asia and Australasia and performed major roles with Opera Australia\, Melbourne Opera and many other leading opera companies. \nSoprano Lee Abrahmsen was genuinely surprised by the sheer scale of the role of Donna Anna. “Vocally\, it’s a major undertaking. Donna Anna leads every ensemble high above the stave and sings one of Mozart’s longest and most emotionally charged recitatives. Add the psychological weight she carries\, and it becomes a role of remarkable stamina\, nuance and depth\,” says Lee. \nHenry Shaw\, winner of the OCCA Best Emerging Talent Award 2025\, is singing Don Giovanni’s servant Leporello. Bass Eddie Muliaumaseali’i joins the cast as the murdered Commendatore\, who drags Don Giovanni to the hell that he deserves. Tenor Henry Choo is singing Don Ottavio\, betrothed to Donna Anna. \nGreen Room Award nominated conductor Raymond Lawrence will conduct\, delivering some of Mozart’s most famous and most loved music. Highlights include ‘Catalogue Aria’ (Madamina\, il catalogo è questo)\, the seductive duet ‘Là ci darem la mano’ and the rapid Champagne Aria (Fin ch’han dal vino). \nIn August\, Melbourne Opera will stage Il Trovatore starring leading international soprano Helena Dix and Rosario La Spina\, who won a 2026 Green Room Award for Outstanding Performance in a Leading Role for Melbourne Opera’s Samson et Dalila. \nThe company’s ambitious staging of Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (2025) was a major winner in the inaugural OperaChaser Critics Awards (OCCAs)\, announced in February. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.melbourneopera.com  \nBehind-the-curtain updates: @MelbourneOpera

SUMMARY:Victoria Chorale "Mozart Great Mass in C Minor" Concert
DESCRIPTION:Victoria Chorale Concert: Mozart’s “Great Mass in C Minor” \nVictoria Chorale presents the Great Mass in C Minor by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart  \nVictoria Chorale; Art of Sound Ensemble; Conductor Mario Dobernig \nTo launch our 2026 concert program\, we are excited to present the Great Mass in C Minor by much-loved audience favourite\, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart\, to take place at 5pm on Saturday 16 May 2026 at Melbourne’s magnificent St Paul’s Cathedral. \nDescribed as ‘Great’ because of its sheer size\, the Mass represents Mozart at his most daring and innovative. Soaring above the conventions of his time\, he crafted the C Minor Mass to be a work of breathtaking scope and architectural grandeur featuring many virtuoso arias for soprano and mezzo soprano and a double choir with two separate four-part choirs (soprano alto\, tenor\, bass) that push the human voice to its expressive limits. \nConsidered his most personal sacred work\, it was composed not out of economic necessity but out of a deeply-held conviction: a promise to his new wife Constanze\, who herself sang in the first and only performance to take place in his lifetime at St Peters\, Salzburg in 1783. Mozart tailored the large range of challenging vocal melody (coloratura) of the soprano solos to Costanza’s beautiful voice\, so she could suitably display her vocal gifts. \nMozart did not finish the work and the reasons for this remain a mystery – there is speculation that the practical pressures of needing to find financial work\, personal demands in Vienna\, or possibly the tragic death of his child contributed. \nHis planned big tenor and bass arias to match the scale of the soprano arias were not composed and large portions of the Credo and the complete Agnus Dei are missing. However\, this work demonstrates Mozart unleashing the full force of his genius with melodies and themes woven together to create harmony and complexity and rich orchestral colours. \nConducted by our exciting and innovative Musical Director\, Mario Dobernig\, we will be joined by the brilliant Art of Sound Orchestra and talented soloists\, Molly Ryan\, Soprano\, Sally-Anne Russell\, Mezzo Soprano\,  Jiacheng Ding\, Tenor and Michael Lampard\, Baritone. \nA performance not to be missed! \nEarly bird closes 31 March 2026. \n5.00 pm Saturday 16 May\, 2026 \n**Please note that tickets are non-refundable** \nLocation: St Paul’s Cathedral\, Cnr Flinders and Swanston Streets\, Melbourne Vic 3000:
