SUMMARY:Affinity Quartet and the Australian National Academy of Music: Haydn - Seven Last Words
DESCRIPTION:In this unique Chapel concert\, Affinity Quartet are returning to Haydn\, the widely acknowledged father of string quartet music as we know it\, and apply their craft to the meditative sections of Seven Last Words. Each is based on an expression attributed to Christ during his crucifixion\, and is bookended by a contemplative introduction and a hectic conclusion akin to an ‘earthquake’ based on Matthew 27:51: the temple curtain was torn in two from top to bottom\, the earth shook\, and the rocks split. This ‘tearing of the veil’ symbolises humanity’s sudden access to God. \nNaturally\, this work was commissioned by a priest\, who paid Haydn in a suitably symbolic way: sending him a cake which\, when cut\, was revealed to have been filled with gold coins. \nBased in Melbourne\, and originally comprising of musicians who all once graced the halls of ANAM\, Affinity Quartet have blazed their own trail internationally\, having won several competitions including the International Chamber Music Competition In 2023. They make their return to ANAM after representing Australia at Rheingau Music Festival with acclaimed violist\, composer and former ANAM Artistic Director\, Brett Dean\, where they performed string quartet compositions by both Dean and Haydn.\n\nJoseph HAYDN The Seven Last Words of Christ\, Hob. SUMMARY:Australian National Academy of Music: Beethoven's World - Headstrong Apprentice
DESCRIPTION:A series of four concerts\, each presenting a particular aspect of Beethoven’s life and character. \nJoin us for a concert that unveils the vibrant spirit of a teenage Beethoven\, brimming with ambition and creativity. Experience his captivating Piano Quartet in C major\, composed when he was just 14 or 15. This piece is a celebration of humour\, energy\, and originality\, and is one of the first known examples of the genre. \nBut Beethoven’s journey didn’t stop there. With a humble heart\, teenage Beethoven sought to further his artistry under the mentorship of the esteemed Josef Haydn. The refinement he acquired under Haydn’s guidance can be heard in his effortlessly urbane Septet for winds and strings. It became the composer’s biggest hit\, performed more frequently in his lifetime than any of his other works. \nLudwig van BEETHOVEN Piano Quartet No. 3 in C Major\, WoO 36\nJosef HAYDN Symphony No. 6 in D Major\, Le Matin\nLudwig van BEETHOVEN Septet in E-flat Major\, Op. 20 \nCaroline Henbest (Resident Faculty\, viola) director/viola\nMarko Ylönen director/cello\nANAM Musicians \nThu 11 Sep 2025\, 3PM\n\nThis concert lasts approximately 1 hour 15 minutes with no interval.  \nThe Good Shepherd Chapel (next to Abbotsford Convent)\, 1 St Heliers St\, ABBOTSFORD VIC \nTICKETS: A Little Extra $60.00; Standard $40.00; A Little Less $20.00
