SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble – Melodies and Melodrama
DESCRIPTION:The mighty music of Brahms was a great influence on the lesser known Hungarian composer Ernö Dohnányi. While Brahms’ brooding Piano Quartet No.1 (notably premiered by Clara Schumanm) may at first appear restrained compared to the decadence of Dohnányi’s colossal Sextet\, the soaring melodies and sumptuous texture in both works are imbued with equal romantic passion and unabashed melodrama. \nThe finale of Omega Ensemble’s 2022 Season is marked by a new commission from French composer Laurent Lefrançois\, whose works are equally marked by colourful twists and turns. With Dohnanyi’s Sextet featuring some of the most glorious melodic writing for French Horn\, the Ensemble is joined for this performance by Nicolas Fleury\, Principal Horn of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. \n\nThursday 15 December 2022 7pm; MRC Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hours 30 mins (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $69 ($59 Concession); Under 30 $49

SUMMARY:Alexander Gavrylyuk
DESCRIPTION:Following his huge success in Melbourne Recital Centre’s Great Performers series in 2016\, dazzling piano virtuoso Alexander Gavrylyuk returns in November for one performance only. Born in the Ukraine\, Gavrylyuk already had competition wins before age 13\, when he came to study in Sydney. The Australian experience itself is the stuff of legend\, including early international success\, and recovery from a horrific car accident. \nThere have been invitations from all over the world and many more wins\, including the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Masters Competition in Israel. This was a fitting honour\, as Gavrylyuk’s style is not dissimilar to that of the legendary Romantic pianist and Chopin exponent. \n“What can confidently be said about Gavrylyuk is that he is a concert pianist in the traditional sense. A pianist who thrills the audience with a dazzling display of technique\, yet can infuse his playing with deep sensibility and understanding of the composer’s soul”. Suzanne Yanko\, Artshub\, 2013 \nThe generous program comprises: \nBach\nBusoni Toccata and Fugue in D minor \nHaydn\nSonata in B minor No.47 XVI:32 \nChopin\nEtudes Op. 10 No.3\, No.8\, No.9\, No.10\, No.11 and No.12 \nInterval \nScriabin\nSonata No.5 \nRachmaninov\nPreludes Op.23\, No.1\,5\,12\nSonata No.2 (2nd edition) \n  \n

SUMMARY:Mozart’s Piano
DESCRIPTION:Two heavenly piano concerti and two joyous orchestral masterpieces—a decadent all-Mozart delight. \nAs well as his skills as a composer\, Mozart’s reputation in his day also rested on his exceptional abilities as a pianist. Many of his 27 piano concerti were written for his own concerts\, and they are testament to his technique and sensitivity at the keyboard. \nFew Australian musicians have achieved an international career like David Fung\, whose performances of Mozart’s piano concerti have earned significant international praise. Now based in New York\, Fung is a laureate of the prestigious Queen Elisabeth competition in Brussels and the Arthur Rubinstein competition in Tel Aviv\, and performs for celebrated orchestras and festivals across the globe. David joins MCO to perform two of Mozart’s most beautiful piano concerti alongside the ebullient Symphony No 29 and the majestic Serenata Notturna.

SUMMARY:Bach: Spirit & Spectacle
DESCRIPTION:The many faces of the Baroque’s great genius \nNo name is more synonymous with Baroque music than Bach. Through his prolific output\, he brought the musical language of the time to the pinnacle of its expressive power\, fusing intellect\, technique and emotion into some of the most enduring music of all. This program explores the enormous range of contrasting moods and colours in Bach’s music\, from the sublime cantatas to his ecstatic and virtuosic string concerti. \nSara Macliver is a musical living treasure. Her superb soprano voice is the perfect vehicle for the moving Bach arias she performs with MCO in this program. Sara also performs Calvin Bowman’s lush song cycle Die Linien des Lebens (The Lines of Life) which was written for her and premiered with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in 2010. The program also showcases brilliant young violinist Anne-Marie Johnson as the soloist in Bach’s demanding D minor Violin Concerto.

SUMMARY:The Gypsy Palace
DESCRIPTION:Of course\, there was never a gypsy palace. How could there have been? And yet\, the old tales persist about the mystical palace\, appearing at the top of the hill through the midnight mists… the wild nights! the dancing! the fiddle playing!…\n\nNearly 300 years ago in Eastern Europe\, hundreds of gypsy melodies were collected for the Uhrovska Collection\, providing a rare and unique snapshot of a folk tradition that existed alongside the courtly music of the Baroque. \nIn this evocative ensemble project\, MCO Virtuosi director Rebecca Chan weaves a colourful and entrancing musical tapestry\, tracing the spirit and energy of gypsy music across half a millennium of music. Witty dances by Telemann\, virtuosic concerti by Vivaldi and Haydn and a spectacular string symphony of CPE Bach will transport you with their infectious vitality.

SUMMARY:Classical Visions
DESCRIPTION:Proportion\, balance\, elegance—our 2016 season opens with four iconic works\, offering four very different visions of Classical beauty. \nTwo of the most enduring works from Mozart’s artistic zenith showcase his extraordinary emotional range as a mature composer. Audience favourite David Griffiths performs the solo in the serene Clarinet Concerto\, Mozart’s final concerto work\, which is contrasted with one of his most tempestuous visions\, the Symphony No. 40 in G minor. \nRavishingly beautiful French vignettes for harp and strings epitomise the clarity of spirit of turn-of-the century French music. Brilliant young harpist Melina van Leeuwen joins MCO to perform in Ravel’s sparkling Introduction & Allegro and Debussy’s Danses sacrée et profane.
