SUMMARY:Victorian Opera: Mozart's "Abduction"
DESCRIPTION:Victorian Opera presents a bold adaptation of Mozart’s early masterpiece\, The Abduction from the Seraglio\, reimagined as Abduction at the Palais Theatre from 12–16 August. Prepare for the most seductive night at the opera you’ll ever have\, featuring a stellar cast including Lyndon Watts (Candide\, Hamilton) as beguiling figurehead The Pasha. \nDirector Constantine Costi (Melbourne Cheremushki) brings a cheeky\, modern edge to this classic with a fresh\, English-language libretto that delves into themes of lust\, obsession and unwavering loyalty. Conductor Chad Kelly leads Orchestra Victoria in a performance grounded in Mozart’s original intentions. \nThe story follows Blonde and Konstanze\, two young women who slip away from their well-meaning but bumbling fiancés\, Pedrillo and Belmonte\, in search of excitement at the mysterious and hedonistic House of the Pasha. \nTo meet Mozart’s demanding score\, Victorian Opera has assembled a cast of Australia’s most exciting young singers—many returning from celebrated careers in Europe. \nCleo Lee-McGowan and Kyle Stegall star as two of Mozart’s most passionate lovers\, Konstanze and Belmonte. They are joined by recent Green Room Award winners Katherine Allen (Candide) and Douglas Kelly (La Rondine) in the roles of Blonde and Pedrillo. \nMusical theatre star Lyndon Watts brings irresistible charm to the role of the enigmatic Pasha\, in a pivotal non-singing role. Making his company debut\, Luke Stoker stars as Osmin\, the Pasha’s intense right-hand man. \n\n\nTuesday 12 August\, 7.30 pm\nThursday 14 August\, 7.30 pm ^\nSaturday 16 August\, 7.30 pm \nDuration: 2 hours and 15 minutes\, including an intervalSung in German with English surtitles \n^ Digital Access livestream available \nContent Warnings: Smoke/Haze; Strobe/Flashing Lights; Weapons Use; Drug Use; Sexual References \n\n\n\n\nPalais Theatre\, St Kilda \n\nTICKETS: $170 – $30

SUMMARY:Melbourne Opera presents the grand French opera Samson & Delilah
DESCRIPTION:Melbourne Opera will stage Saint-Saëns’ grand opera Samson & Delilah from 1 June at the Palais Theatre. One of the greatest French operas\, Samson and Delilah powerfully tells the story of the seduction and downfall of Samson. \nNot performed in Australia since the 1980s\, the iconic opera will star two of Australia’s most celebrated international singers. Deborah Humble (The Ring Cycle\, Sydney Opera House solo) will make her debut in the role of Delilah\, one of the greatest mezzo roles in the repertoire. Rosario la Spina (Opera Australia’s Die Walküre\, Madama Butterfly – Belgium) will star as Samson. Melbourne’s visionary opera director Suzanne Chaundy will direct.  \nThe French opera follows the extraordinary success of February’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Royal Exhibition Building\, also directed by Suzanne Chaundy\, with Deborah Humble in the cast.  \nSamson & Delilah is based on a violent and erotic story from the Old Testament\, and features one of the most well known love duets in the repertoire. \n\nThe opera features two extensive dance sequences\, and is a well known chorus opera. The consistently acclaimed Melbourne Opera chorus will perform under Raymond Lawrence\, who also conducts.  \nTwo of Delilah’s arias are particularly iconic\, ‘Printemps qui commence’ (Spring begins) and ‘Mon cœur s’ouvre à ta voix’ (Softly awakes my heart).  \nMelbourne Opera\, which receives no government funding\, stages multiple full-scale productions each year on Melbourne’s main stages. The company gives many young singers and musicians invaluable professional experience at the outset of their careers in the company of distinguished experienced artists. As well as mainstream repertoire\, the company also presents many lesser-known masterpieces. \nTickets available via Ticketmaster.

SUMMARY:Victorian Opera presents: Salome (Richard Strauss)
DESCRIPTION:Prepare to be astounded and mesmerised by this horrifying yet exhilarating spectacle. Based on Oscar Wilde’s notorious play\, Strauss’ opera explores the nature of desire and outer limits of human behaviour. SUMMARY:Laughter and Tears
DESCRIPTION:Victorian Opera returns to The Palais following The Flying Dutchman (2015)\, bringing the breathtaking experience of large scale opera into the superb acoustics of this iconic theatre. \nIn Laughter\, the comical adventures of characters from the Commedia Dell’Arte unfold through a spellbinding mix of acrobatics and ancient Italian songs. Performers from Circus Oz join an ensemble of extraordinary singers to create a dream-like vision of 17th and 18th century theatre. \nIn Tears\, the lives of the performers from Laughter unravel through a dramatic retelling of Leoncavallo’s captivating tragedy I Pagliacci. Canio’s show-stopping aria ‘Vesti la giubba’ (‘Put on the costume’) has been immortalised by some of the world’s greatest singers. Now formidable Australian tenor Rosario La Spina gives new voice to Canio and Emma Pearson\, an Australian soprano taking Germany by storm\, returns to play the restless Nedda. Sung in Italian with English surtitles. \nLaughter and Tears is a co-production of Victorian Opera and State Opera of South Australia\, presented in association with Circus Oz. \n13\, 16\, 18 August 2016\, 7:30pm\nThe Palais \nTickets\n$50 – $130 Concessions available \nBooking\nvictorianopera.com.au\nTicketmaster 136 100

SUMMARY:2Cellos
DESCRIPTION:Following their critically acclaimed and sold out 2014 Australian tour\, dynamic instrumental duo 2CELLOS will return to Australia in January 2015. \nYoung Croatian cellists Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser\, together known as 2CELLOS\, came to international fame in 2011 when their cello version of Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal went viral. It has since reached over 20 million youtube views.  Their playing style has broken down the boundaries between different genres of music\, from classical and film music to pop and rock. 2CELLOS have no limits when it comes to performing live and are equally as impressive when playing Bach and Vivaldi as they are when rocking out. 2CELLOS toured Australia as part of Elton John’s band on his 2011 and 2012 Australian tours. \nSulic and Hauser have played the cello since childhood; Sulic graduated from the acclaimed Royal Academy of Music in London\, and Hauser from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester\, both in 2011. Sulic has won a series of top prizes at numerous prestigious international music competitions including First and Special Prize at the VII Lutoslawski International Cello Competition in Warsaw (2009)\, First Prize at the European Broadcasting Union “New Talent” Competition (2006) and First Prize at the Royal Academy of Music Patron’s Award in Wigmore Hall (2011) among others. Hauser has worked with acclaimed classical artists such as Mstislav Rostropovich\, Bernard Greenhouse\, Mennahem Pressler and Ivry Gitlis\, to mention a few. He has collected no less than twenty-one first prizes at national and international music competitions. \n
