SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: French Delights
DESCRIPTION:Tair Khisambeev violin\nMatthew Tomkins violin\nFiona Sargeant viola\nElina Faskhi cello\nBen Hanlon double bass\nWendy Clarke flute\nDavid Thomas clarinet\nMelina van Leeuwen harp \nProgram\nRameau Pièces de clavecin en concerts: Concerto No.5\nDebussy (arr. Steele Johnson) Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune\nFrançaix Quintet for flute\, harp and string trio\nDebussy String Quartet\nRavel Introduction and Allegro \nAbout this performance\nExplore the evolution of intimate French chamber works from the baroque to the contemporary in this program curated by MSO Associate Principal Flute Wendy Clarke. \n\nBaroque composer Rameau wrote five ‘concerts’ – similar to the Italian ‘concerto’ for chamber ensemble – celebrating 18th century characters\, places\, and dances. Rameau’s Fifth Concerto is a delightfully charming step back in time to the world of French baroque.\nClaude Debussy’s sultry Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune depicts a faun – half man\, half horse – waking languorously from a warm afternoon nap to contemplate his sensual\, dream-bound encounter with nymphs. By contrast\, the colours and textures Debussy creates in his String Quartet have a shimmering\, iridescent quality\, even in moments of moody darkness.\nHeavily influenced by the music of Ravel\, Jean Françaix’s Quintet for flute\, harp and string trio fuses his impressionist roots with neoclassical and modern idioms in this intriguing work.\nRavel’s Introduction and Allegro – scored for harp\, flute\, clarinet and string quartet – shows off the flowing beauty of the harp as an instrument. Fascinatingly\, there are sections of this vibrant and characterful work that sound like a whole orchestra as Ravel experimented with different musical textures.\n\nSunday 29 October 2023 11:00am at Iwaki Auditorium\nDuration: approx. 1 hour and 45 minutes including interval \nTICKETS: Standard $59 (Concession $54); General Admission

SUMMARY:Melbourne Youth Orchestra: Hungarian Rhapsodies
DESCRIPTION:  \nGuest Conductor Carolyn Watson gives us a sneak preview of MYO’s forthcoming subscription concert…. \n  \nBartók’s seminal work\, the Concerto for Orchestra (1944) forms the centerpiece of the Melbourne Youth Orchestra’s third Subscription Concert for 2015. Showcasing music of the Central European tradition\, the concert also features Kodaly’s energetic Dances of Galánta. \nOn the podium is US-based Australian conductor\, Carolyn Watson\, for whom this performance is her Melbourne Youth Orchestra debut. \nWatson enthuses ‘it is great to be back in Australia and working with these talented young musicians. These works present a highly challenging and demanding program from both a technical and musical perspective\, but it has been wonderful to observe these young musicians’ development over the course of the rehearsal period.’ \nThis program is one very much close to heart for Watson\, who spent two years studying in Hungary at the renowned Liszt Academy and at the Zoltán Kodály Pedagogical Institute of Music. More recently she returned to Hungary for the 2012 Emmerich Kálmán International Conducting Competition where she was among the prizewinners and in the 2015-16 season Watson will return to Hungary to perform with the Kodály Filharmonia. \nShe continues\, ‘this visceral folk-inspired music of Bartók and Kodály is unlike any other. These two composers effectively established the study and concept of ethnomusicology as we know it\, and during their lifetime were perhaps best known for their work collecting and categorizing the folk tunes which later inspired their compositions. The result is orchestral literature that is not only deeply idiosyncratic\, but also a reflection of the diversity of musical culture of that characterizes Hungary.’ \nTo read more about Carolyn Watson\, please see: www.carolyn-watson.com \nTo read more about Melbourne Youth Music: http://www.mym.org.au/ \nMelbourne Youth Orchestra \nProgram: \nKodály Dances of Galánta \nBartók Concerto for Orchestra \nSunday August 30 2015\, 7pm \nIwaki Auditorium \nABC Southbank \nTickets: www.trybooking.com \n  \n
