SUMMARY:Lyric Opera of Melbourne: Songs of Devotion & Desire
DESCRIPTION:If you’re feeling the pace of the world right now\, this is your invitation to step away for a moment. \nOur first concert of the year\, Songs of Devotion and Desire\, is this Sunday. A 75-minute\, no interval concert of powerful\, deeply human music\, centred on three of Benjamin Britten’s Canticles\,presented in the 50th anniversary year of his death\, alongside the world premieres of Kevin March’s Sacred Songs. \nAn intimate concert centred on Benjamin Britten’s extraordinary Canticles – miniature dramas that distill complex emotional and spiritual themes into concentrated musical forms. \nOften described as “operas in miniature”\, Britten’s Canticles serve as profound psychological portraits. They trace themes of love\, sacrifice\, transcendence and doubt\, revealing the fragile boundary between the sacred and the deeply human. \nBritten openly acknowledged that Henry Purcell’s Divine Hymns provided the creative impulse for the Canticles – part of his broader engagement with the English Baroque tradition established by Purcell and later shaped by Handel. \nIn a powerful contemporary response\, Lyric Opera of Melbourne will present the World Premieres of Sacred Songs Books I & II by Australian composer Kevin March. Presented in dialogue with Britten’s Canticles\, March’s new works offer deeply personal reflections on faith and meaning in the modern world. \nArtists: Louis Hurley – Tenor; Olivia Federow-Yemm – Mezzo-soprano; Abbie Edlin – French Horn; Stefan Cassomenos – Piano \nBenjamin Britten \nCanticle I: My beloved is mine and I am his\, Op. 40 \nCanticle II: Abraham and Isaac\, Op. 51 \nCanticle III: Still Falls the Rain\, Op. 55 \nKevin March \nSacred Songs Book I (World Premiere) \nSacred Songs Book II (World Premiere) \nSunday 12 April\, 3pm\nChurch of All Nations\, Carlton \nTickets are available below or can be purchased at the door on the day. \nWe’d love to see you there. \nLyric Opera of Melbourne \nTICKETS: $50 – $40\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook Tickets

SUMMARY:Ensemble Liaison & Friends: Echoes of Vienna
DESCRIPTION:Ensemble Liaison opens its 2026 series with Echoes of Vienna.\nA program reflecting the rich musical currents that flowed through the cultural crossroads of fin-de-siècle Vienna. \nThe evening begins with Sergei Prokofiev’s spirited Overture on Hebrew Themes\, written for Russian-Jewish musicians in New York and drawing on folk melodies whose roots stretch back to Eastern Europe. The program also features the world premiere of The Drowned World by Australian composer Stuart Greenbaum\, a striking contemporary work inspired by the novel of J. G. Ballard and written for Ensemble Liaison. \nAnton Webern’s youthful Langsamer Satz reveals the composer before his radical modernism\, steeped in the lush expressive language of late-Romantic Vienna. The concert concludes with the richly lyrical Trio in D minor by Alexander Zemlinsky\, a work of sweeping Romantic intensity that was endorsed by Brahms and captures the emotional world of Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century. \nEnsemble Liaison is delighted to present this concert with their dear friend\, violinist Sophie Rowell together with the talented students of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. \nSergei Prokofiev Overture on Hebrew Themes  \nStuart Greenbaum The Drowned World (world premiere) \nAnton Webern Langsamer Satz for String Quartet (1905) \nAlexander von Zemlinsky Trio in D minor Op.3 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 09 April 2026 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: TBC. SUMMARY:Melbourne Bach Choir St Matthew Passion
DESCRIPTION:The Melbourne Bach Choir and Melbourne Baroque Orchestra conducted by Rick Prakhoff present the St Matthew Passion by J.S. Bach\, sung in German. Two adult choirs\, a children’s choir\, two orchestras and outstanding Australian soloists will fill Melbourne Recital Centre with this extraordinary\, dramatic telling of the Passion story\, written to be performed on Good Friday. \nThe Choir’s 2022 performance of this work received a five minute ovation with The Age saying ‘a sterling interpretation of the long Bach Passion’ and Classic Melbourne claiming this ‘concert was a triumph.’ \nAndrew Goodwin again brings his beautiful high tenor to the role of the Evangelist. Adrian Tamburini will sing Christus\, together with aria soloists Lorina Gore\, Sally-Anne Russell\, Henry Choo\, Simon Meadows and Christopher Hillier. \nFrom the darkly evocative orchestral opening Bach creates a narrative more compelling than that of any opera of the period. Sung in German\, this extraordinary musical journey is the perfect reflection for Good Friday.

SUMMARY:Affinity Quartet and the Australian National Academy of Music: Haydn - Seven Last Words
DESCRIPTION:In this unique Chapel concert\, Affinity Quartet are returning to Haydn\, the widely acknowledged father of string quartet music as we know it\, and apply their craft to the meditative sections of Seven Last Words. Each is based on an expression attributed to Christ during his crucifixion\, and is bookended by a contemplative introduction and a hectic conclusion akin to an ‘earthquake’ based on Matthew 27:51: the temple curtain was torn in two from top to bottom\, the earth shook\, and the rocks split. This ‘tearing of the veil’ symbolises humanity’s sudden access to God. \nNaturally\, this work was commissioned by a priest\, who paid Haydn in a suitably symbolic way: sending him a cake which\, when cut\, was revealed to have been filled with gold coins. \nBased in Melbourne\, and originally comprising of musicians who all once graced the halls of ANAM\, Affinity Quartet have blazed their own trail internationally\, having won several competitions including the International Chamber Music Competition In 2023. They make their return to ANAM after representing Australia at Rheingau Music Festival with acclaimed violist\, composer and former ANAM Artistic Director\, Brett Dean\, where they performed string quartet compositions by both Dean and Haydn.\n\nJoseph HAYDN The Seven Last Words of Christ\, Hob. SUMMARY:Melbourne Recital Centre & the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) Mostly Mozart – Mannheim to Paris
DESCRIPTION:Mozart’s self-described best.\nMusicians from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM)\, alongside director and ANAM horn alum Carla Blackwood\, present a morning of music that unites winds and strings. \nA 28-year-old Mozart considered the Quintet in E-flat one of his greatest works. This piece effortlessly balances wind timbres against piano in an ever changing sequence of melodic development. Written at the peak of his compositional powers\, this ever-popular work\, combining complexity with charming musical conversation\, radiates with an alchemy that is distinctly Mozart. \nThe exploration of Mozart’s great works continues in his Quintet for Horn and Strings\, which distinctly features just a single violin and cello\, along with two violas. Breaking the traditional string quartet format\, the addition of the two violas provides this stunning work with a blend of brightness and depth. This unique ensemble provides the perfect accompaniment to the star of the piece – the horn. \nReceiving long overdue recognition\, the 19th-century French composer Louise Farrenc’s Sextet for winds and piano in C Minor is sandwiched between the two Mozart masters. Overflowing with warmth and appealing melodies\, Farrenc’s intimate 20-minute work is a perfect addition for a morning of music that will enliven the spirit. \nCarla Blackwood director/horn (ANAM Alum\, 2000); ANAM Musicians \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart Quintet in E-flat\, K.452 \nLouise Farrenc Sextet in C Minor\, Op.40 \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart Quintet for Horn and Strings in E-flat\, K.407 \nMorning Tea\nJoin us for a complimentary morning tea of coffee\, tea\, sweet treats and savoury delights from 10am in the ground floor foyer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday 01 April 2026 – 11:00am \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval). SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents Stravinsky & Chindamo
DESCRIPTION:Prepare to use your imagination in weird and wonderful ways. \n\n\n\n\nWhen French composer Maurice Ravel wrote his ethereal Pavane pour une infante défunte\, he’d been dreaming of the long-lost melodies that may once have inspired a young Spanish princess to dance. Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring shares a French connection as it premiered shortly after in a Parisian theatre\, but the story of this ballet music is much darker. It culminates with the raw and frenetic rhythms of a sacrificial dance\, sounding wild enough to send audiences into an uproar at the first performance. \nThe musical tales on this program are centred around Are there any questions? – an Australian composition from MSO 2026 Composer in Residence\, Joe Chindamo. It takes its name from the final line of Margaret Atwood’s chilling dystopic novel The Handmaid’s Tale. Hear Chindamo’s piece for the first time on this narrative-fuelled program. It’s music to leave you thinking deeply about the world you live in – and the worlds that live inside you. \n\n\n\n\nThursday 19 March 7:30 PM\n\n\nSaturday 21 March 7:30 PM\n\n\n Running Time 1 hour 45 minutes (including 20 minute interval) \nArts Centre melbourne\, hamer Hall \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard from $75.00; Concession* from $70.00; Child** from $20.00

SUMMARY:IOpera: Michael Nyman's 'The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat' Tickets
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to announce that our next production is a 40th Anniversary staging of Michael Nyman‘s operatic adaptation of Oliver Sacks‘ best-seller neurological case study THE MAN WHO MISTOOK HIS WIFE FOR A HAT (1986) \nClosely following his story\, the one-hour opera explores the mind of “Dr. P\,” a professional opera singer and music teacher\, for whom the world has been rendered visually incomprehensible as a result of a degenerative neurological disorder. \nRunning for just on an hour\, the opera explores both common preconceptions about dementia-related illnesses and the extraordinary ways one afflicted man and his wife cope.  Nyman’s lyrical score demonstrates all the accessible and appealing qualities that he later also exhibited in his music for Jane Campion’s The PIano (1993). \nFor this production we welcome back three of Australia’s most accomplished operatic performers: Elena Xanthoudakis\, Christopher HIllier\, and Robert Macfarlane\, and a chamber orchestra (including members of the Invictus String Quartet). \nThree performances only\, all in the intimate surrounds of the Athenaeum II Theatre\, 188 Collins St\, Melbourne. \n   Friday 20 March\, 7:30 pm \n   Saturday 21 March\, 5:00 pm \n   Saturday 21 March\, 7:00 pm \nTICKETS: $69 – $49 \nTickets are otherwise available through Ticketmaster: https://www.ticketmaster.com.au/michael-nyman-s-the-man-who-mistook-his-wife-for-a-hat-tickets/artist/4163359
