SUMMARY:The Tallis Scholars
DESCRIPTION:The Tallis Scholars will perform a sublime program of Renaissance masters alongside works from the world’s greatest living composers of sacred choral music on their extended national tour of Australia. \nFor over 40 years\, British early music vocal ensemble The Tallis Scholars have established themselves as the world’s leading exponents of Renaissance sacred music\, creating a sound of astonishing beauty and blend\, and resetting the bar for a cappella music. \nLed by Director Peter Phillips\, the program will feature the music of Tallis through to Muhly and Arvo Pärt\, the most performed living ‘classical’ composer in the world. \n“their voices touched the sublime…. the sense steadily grew that if the herald angels would leave off their infernal harking and form an earthly choir\, then this is probably how they would sound.” The Guardian 2013 ★★★★★

SUMMARY:RMP: Britten and Williams
DESCRIPTION:A Sea Symphony\, composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams between 1903 and 1909 was that composer’s first and longest symphony\, and helped set the stage for a new era of symphonic and choral music in Britain during the first half of the 20th century. The text of A Sea Symphony comes from the great American poet Walt Whitman. Vaughan Williams was attracted to Whitman’s verses for their ability to transcend both metaphysical and humanist perspectives. Vaughan Williams’ masterly handling of the massive orchestral and choral forces\, the boldness\, energy and stunning orchestration of A Sea Symphony vividly evokes the immensity and primal force of the sea. The work hailed the triumphant arrival of a new and powerful voice in  English music.\nBenjamin Britten’s orchestral tour de force Four Sea Interludes come from his operatic masterpiece Peter Grimes\, about a fisherman on England’s eastern coast\, a misanthropic loner who is hounded to self-destruction by the townspeople after the mysterious\, but accidental\, deaths of two of his apprentices. The opera’s premiere was immediately recognized as a landmark for English opera. In the opera the Four Sea Interludes not only take the listener from one physical location to another\, but also go inside the characters’ minds\, which throughout the opera are full  of turmoil and doubt. This relentless tragedy evoked from Britten music of overwhelming power with a score that is high-tensioned\, surging with dramatic force and orchestral violence\, but also includes passages of sublime beauty and tenderness \nHear these two great masterpieces performed by over 300 passionate choral and orchestral musicians\, two outstanding Australian soloists and dynamic RMP Chief Conductor Andrew Wailes\, widely acknowledged as one of the country’s leading symphonic choral interpreters. \n

SUMMARY:ACO: Reflections on Gallipoli
DESCRIPTION:‘You\, the mothers\, who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.’ – MUSTAFA KEMAL ATATÜRK \nAtatürk’s words\, inscribed on the memorial stone overlooking ANZAC Cove\, Gallipoli\, echo in the heart. So too\, does the music of Frederick Septimus Kelly. Kelly was an Australian-born composer\, living in London when war broke out. He joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve with his friend\, the poet Rupert Brooke. When Brooke fell ill and died on the way to Gallipoli\, Kelly was by his side\, and soon after Brooke’s death Kelly wrote a haunting string serenade in his memory. \nRichard Tognetti\, large-scale theatre specialist\, Nigel Jamieson\, and one of Australia’s greatest storytellers\, Neil Armfield join forces to present this heartfelt exploration of our ANZAC story through music\, spoken text and visual imagery\, where an Australian’s elegy for his friend brushes shoulders with the words of the father of modern Turkey. Set to music in a new work by Carl Vine featuring soprano Taryn Fiebig\, the program also features English works that are evocative of the era\, including Elgar’s Sospiri and Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending\, as well as the music of the Ottoman Empire and 20th-century Turkey. \nProgram\nBARTÓK String Quartet No.2: Allegro molto capriccioso\nKELLY Elegy for strings ‘In Memoriam Rupert Brooke’\nSARISÖZEN (arr. SUMMARY:ACO: Reflections on Gallipoli
DESCRIPTION:‘You\, the mothers\, who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.’ – MUSTAFA KEMAL ATATÜRK\n\nAtatürk’s words\, inscribed on the memorial stone overlooking ANZAC Cove\, Gallipoli\, echo in the heart. So too\, does the music of Frederick Septimus Kelly. Kelly was an Australian-born composer\, living in London when war broke out. He joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve with his friend\, the poet Rupert Brooke. When Brooke fell ill and died on the way to Gallipoli\, Kelly was by his side\, and soon after Brooke’s death Kelly wrote a haunting string serenade in his memory.\n\nRichard Tognetti\, large-scale theatre specialist\, Nigel Jamieson\, and one of Australia’s greatest storytellers\, Neil Armfield join forces to present this heartfelt exploration of our ANZAC story through music\, spoken text and visual imagery\, where an Australian’s elegy for his friend brushes shoulders with the words of the father of modern Turkey. Set to music in a new work by Carl Vine featuring soprano Taryn Fiebig\, the program also features English works that are evocative of the era\, including Elgar’s Sospiri and Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending\, as well as the music of the Ottoman Empire and 20th-century Turkey.\n\n\nProgram \n\nBARTÓK String Quartet No.2: Allegro molto capriccioso\nKELLY Elegy for strings ‘In Memoriam Rupert Brooke’\nSARISÖZEN (arr. SUMMARY:James Ehnes with MSO
DESCRIPTION:Berlioz Harold in Italy\nBerlioz Reverie and Caprice for violin and orchestra\nBeethoven Symphony No.7 \nSir Andrew Davis conductor\nJames Ehnes viola and violin \nThe heart of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 is the sublime Allegretto\, a walking tune subject to transformations that must have seemed tremendously novel to the work’s first audience in 1813\, but now seem dream-like in their perfection. Sir Andrew’s survey of Berlioz’s major works continues in the company of James Ehnes. As Gramophone magazine said of this magnificent musician: ‘You get the feeling every time he puts bow to string that something special will\, quite naturally\, just happen.’ \nPre-concert talk (7 November at 7pm and 8 November at 1pm)\nGraham Abbott will present a talk on the artists and works featured in the program. \nDuration\n2 hours with 20 minute interval.
