SUMMARY:Kristian Chong and Friends – Sophie and Kristian play Sutherland and Franck
DESCRIPTION:Well known and thrilling musicians Sophie Rowell (former Melbourne Symphony Concertmaster and new Melbourne Chamber Orchestra director) and Kristian Chong have been playing together for many years\, having grown up together in their home town of Adelaide. They play a program of epic proportions – starting with Australian Margaret Sutherland’s Sonata for Violin and Piano\, written almost 100 years ago in 1925. \nFollowing from this is the great Cesar Franck Sonata for Violin and Piano\, one of the highlights of the sonata repertoire; a beautiful\, passionate and mesmerising journey that written as a wedding present to the violinist Ysaÿe. It culminates as any wedding does – with exultant joy. A recital not to be missed. \n\nWednesday 1 November 2023 6pm; MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $50 ($40 Concession)

SUMMARY:Duo Eclettico: Magic
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the magical\, the ethereal\, the demonic and the ‘other’.\nDuo Eclettico’s performance in the Primrose Potter Salon celebrates the magical\, the ethereal\, the demonic\, and the ‘other’\, with works from South Africa and Australia. Hendrik Hofmeyr\, arguably South Africa’s most celebrated living composer\, is represented with Necromancer\, a virtuosic yet beautifully colourful work evoking the magic of a necromancer\, in Hofmeyr’s writing a symbol for LGBTIQ+ sexuality and attempted repression of this by traditional conservative forces. \nPaired with Ross Edwards’ Full Moon Dances\, in a stunning arrangement for saxophone\, piano and percussion by Peter Neville. Edwards depicts the universal Moon Goddess incarnate\, source of plant life and protector of the environment\, performing a series of ritual healing ceremonies. \nThe recital culminates in the world premiere of Caerwen Martin’s major new work for soprano saxophone and piano\, The Witch of Kings Cross\, about a fascinating real-life figure – Rosaleen Norton – a poet\, writer\, artist\, philosopher and ‘witch’\, one of the most unique artists in Australia from the 1940s and 50s\, whose work was banned and prohibited by the Australian government for its overt sexuality and focus on non-traditional beliefs. A revolutionary figure\, Norton was arrested multiple times\, her books and artwork publicly burned. She became known as ‘The Witch of Kings Cross’ and is a potent example of an artist whose individuality of spirit was consistently repressed by traditional forces in the conservative Australia of the 1940s and 50s. \nCaerwen Martin’s new work\, specifically composed for Duo Eclettico and this concert\, is in several parts. One section acts as a descriptive musical depiction of Norton’s life and work. The other acts as a healing ‘spell’ for Norton\, but also invites the audience to be immersed in this ritual and hopefully find aspects that can be healing for each listener themselves. \n\nTuesday 31 October 2023\, 6pm;    MRC\,  Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:Flinders Quartet – Musical Portraits
DESCRIPTION:‘To hear someone painted in sound is the most intimate portrait.’ Zoe Knighton\nShostakovich’s incredibly powerful String Quartet No.8 was officially dedicated ‘to the memory of the victims of fascism and war’ but there is much to suggest that Shostakovich meant it as a musical self-portrait. \nSmetana’s String Quartet No.1 ‘From My Life’ is a different type of musical portrait\, taking us on a vivid\, programmatic journey through young love\, and the devastation of tinnitus. In discussing these works\, Flinders Quartet became curious about how a composer would capture their essence and commissioned Tasmanian composer Maria Grenfell to paint them in sound. It will be illuminating for Flinders Quartet to perform their very own musical portrait for audiences and look into the musical mirror to see themselves in music. \n\nMonday 30 October 2023 1pm & 6pm;   MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $40 ($30 Concession); Group 10+ $30; Student $30

SUMMARY:Duo Kirsanova-Lewis: On the Pavements Grey
DESCRIPTION:Violinist Sophia Kirsanova and pianist Georgina Lewis celebrate the diversity\, economic invention and depth of emotion of the minimalist movement. This program journeys from John Adam’s iconic Road Movies to the holy minimalism of Baltic composers Pēteris Vasks and Arvo Pärt\, and wonderful and daring composers on the fringes of the movement\, including ‘Brooklyn’s post-millennial Mozart’\, Missy Mazzoli. The duo also performs Platon Buravicky’s rarely heard\, celestial and deeply moving Angel’s Sight. \nGeorgina explores juxtapositions of freedom and discipline\, introspection and prayer\, beauty and pain in piano music from Arvo Pärt and\, closer to home\, Australia’s own Andrea Keller. Keller’s Life is Brut[if]al featured on her 2020 Journey Home album\, a response to deep study of Pärt’s compositional techniques. \nThis concert also marks a special moment with Sophia giving the Australian premiere\, and the second ever performance of Pēteris Vasks Sonata estiva (Summer Sonata) for violin solo\, with the composer’s blessing. Written in 2022 in response to the outbreak of the war in Ukraine\, the sonata was intended to bring brightness and hope\, take the world away from the harshness of reality and into a meditation on Latvian folk music and nature. \n\nWednesday 27 September 2023 6pm     MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:Affinity Quartet: Infinite Affinities
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the Melbourne ensemble taking the world by storm.\nAffinity Quartet represents the next generation of Australia’s chamber music stars\, having developed its craft in Europe to critical acclaim. It brings home an inspired approach to music-making\, matched by its adventurous spirit as a string quartet for and of today. \nAbout the concert\nFollowing their recent 2nd prize award at the 2023 Mozart International String Quartet Competition Salzburg\, Affinity Quartet return to the Primrose Potter Salon for a program featuring two seminal string quartets. \nOpening with Haydn’s String Quartet Op.50\, No.5 ‘Dream’\, this work beautifully showcases the dance between violin\, viola and cello. Beethoven’s String Quartet No.11 however\, was considered an experiment on compositional techniques of the time with the composer himself rumoured to believe it too extreme for audience consumption\, quoted as saying ‘[the piece] is never to be performed in public.’ \nSandwiched between these two great and vastly different works is the world premiere of a piece that brings together both the progressive and popular elements of string quartet composition: Tom Misson’s Melbourne Recital Centre and the University of Melbourne commissioned Infinite Affinities. \n\nSaturday 29 July 2023 7pm;   MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon   Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:Ziggy & Miles: Sidekick
DESCRIPTION:A musical exploration of family dynamics.\nTitled after the work of the same name\, this concert is a reflection of Ziggy and Miles’ history and brotherly dynamic both on stage and off. Written for the brothers\, Katie Jenkins’ Sidekick intentionally inflates and satires their relationship with musical bickering and sparring virtuosity. \nAbout the concert\nTo open and close the performance\, the brothers perform two works instrumental in developing their teenage love for the guitar duo\, Paulo Bellinati’s fiery Jongo\, and Radamés Gnattali’s Suite Retratos\, both championed by the Assad and Grigoryan brothers. \nThe pieces in between include Ziggy and Miles’ own arrangement of Debussy’s timeless Suite bergamasque\, and a world premiere by local composer Ken Murray’s Trin Warren Tam-boore titled after the wetlands of the same name; a name which was given by the Wurundjeri people meaning Bellbird Waterhole. \n\nFriday 28 July 2023 7pm;  MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon   Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

DESCRIPTION:Selby & Friends’ third concert welcomes back Natalie Chee and Julian Smiles for their 2023 season.\nAbout the concert\nSelby & Friends’ is delighted to welcome back Natalie Chee and Julian Smiles after a Covid- interrupted tour in 2022. In this special program\, Kathy and her friends present three iconic trailblazing composers whose influence exploded previous conceptions to pave an entirely new path forward. \nHaydn was a prolific piano trio composer who literally created our idea of the genre. Dvořák\, the great Czech composer and father of nationalism in music\, made it possible for composers who followed to revel in their mother tongue and express it through music. SUMMARY:Quartz: Langsamer
DESCRIPTION:An ode to tender human emotions.\nAcclaimed Melbourne string quartet Quartz are a confluence of Australian musical talent and world-class technique. Their exciting yet sensitive interpretations of great masterpieces of the string quartet repertoire are a delight to hear and much loved by audiences. \nAbout the concert \nTheir performance in Primrose Potter Salon presents emotional works for the string quartet by Webern and Beethoven. Anton Webern’s utterly ravishing Langsamer Satz (Slow Movement) for string quartet was written when he was madly in love. Inspired by a hiking trip in the Austrian mountains with his future wife\, the influence of Brahms in both romanticism and tonality are evident throughout. Referred to as ‘pure and exalted love music’\, the emotions range from yearning to dramatic turmoil and finally\, tranquility. \nBeethoven’s string quartet Op.127 is the first of his legendary ‘late quartets’. It is an uncommonly tender and introverted work that exudes raw human emotion with spectacular control. The work embodies the stylistic traits of his final period of writing – sublime beauty\, deeply intimate emotion\, epic lengths and superhuman virtuosity. Beethoven’s final music is utterly transcendental. \n\nTuesday 11 July 2023 6pm; Primrose Potter Salon;   Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:Ensemble 642 with Jacob Lawrence – Between Earth and Sky
DESCRIPTION:Ensemble 642 is Hannah Lane (Baroque harp) and Nicholas Pollock (theorbo\, lutes\, baroque guitar). Together they explore the breathtaking sound of early plucked string instruments of the Baroque\, bringing exquisite music that hasn’t been heard for hundreds of years into the 21st century.\n\n\n\n\n\nBased in Basel\, Australian tenor Jacob Lawrence is fast becoming one of the leading tenors of his generation in the performance of early repertoire. He is regularly engaged with leading European ensembles including Les Arts Florissants\, Vox Luminis\, Profeti della Quinta\, Le Miroir de Musique\, and has appeared with groups such as Huelgas Ensemble\, La Cetra\, Voces Suaves\, Göttingen Baroque Orchestra\, Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra\, and Bern Vocale. \nAbout the concert\nTheir performance in Primrose Potter Salon invites the listener to experience the emotion\, virtuosity and vitality of secular and sacred vocal music of the early Italian Baroque\, which\, hundreds of years later\, still has the power to enthrall and delight. \nAt the turn of the 17th century\, newfound approaches to musical expression exploded into every European musical community. At the heart of this movement were the courts of great Italian families such as the Medici\, Sforza\, Gonzaga\, Pamhpili\, and Colonna. To enthrall their patrons\, court musicians broke many of the formal constraints that had bound them throughout the Renaissance and extracted every ounce of expressive possibility from ancient formulae. \nComposer-performers such as Caccini and Frescobaldi used popular musical forms as vehicles for their intellectual prowess\, transforming them with unexpected harmonic treatments\, all with the aim of moving the emotions of the audience\, who just like today\, were delighted by songs that articulated the human condition\, in particular the pleasures and pains of love.\nWell-known madrigals were adorned with breathtakingly virtuosic ornamentation showing not only the compositional facility of the performer but their skill in the ‘cantar della gorgia’\, a type of singing where rapid articulation in the throat enables great agility and speed. \nIn the religious sphere\, these new expressive approaches were used just as effectively. Popular secular songs were appropriated for religious settings and overlaid with spectacular new melodic treatments. Composers such as Chiara Margarita Cozzolani\, one of only a handful of prolific female composers of this period\, used the sacred genre as a vehicle for the expression of intimate devotion and ecstatic elevation. \n\nFriday 14 April 2023 7pm; Primrose Potter Salon; Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $50 ($40 Concession)

SUMMARY:Affinity Quartet – Perpetual Motion
DESCRIPTION:A stirring display of emotion and musicality.\nAbout the artists\nAffinity Quartet represents the next generation of Australia’s chamber music stars\, having developed its craft in Europe to critical acclaim. It brings home an inspired approach to music-making\, matched by its adventurous spirit as a string quartet for and of today. \nAbout the concert\nAffinity Quartet opens their program with Haydn’s 31st String Quartet\, the Op.33 No.1 in B minor. Following a break of ten years from composing string quartets\, Haydn describes his Op.33 set as having a ‘new and special’ style. The key of B minor itself is unusual – a choice that signals the exploratory and unconventional direction of Haydn’s quartet writing in the 1780s. \nMendelssohn’s sixth and final string quartet was composed just two months before his death in 1847. In this 30 minute work\, subtitled Requiem for Fanny\, Mendelssohn turns to the intimacy of string quartet writing to grapple with the sudden death of his only sister and closest confidante\, producing one of his most musically incisive and arresting works. \nAustralian composer and violist Matt Laing\, describes his new work for Affinity Quartet as ‘an abstract still life in perpetual motion\, where even the smallest\, stillest things have a hyperactive inner life’. \n\nThursday 17 November 2022 6pm; Melbourne recital Centre\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $50 ($40 Concession)

SUMMARY:Flinders Quartet – Beethoven and the Vignettes
DESCRIPTION:Five emerging composers respond to Beethoven 200 years on\nAbout the concert\nThe Flinders Quartet performance in Primrose Potter Salon sees the commissioning of five emerging composers to write vignettes in response to Beethoven’s Grosse Fugue\, creating contemporary relevance for this seminal work and ensuring that generations to come have an awareness of Beethoven’s string quartet canon. \nBy pairing Beethoven’s Grosse Fugue with five\, short works\, Flinders Quartet present a new way of listening to the revolutionary composition with a renewed perspective. \nBeethoven’s Opus 18 comprises his first works in the string quartet genre and his development of one small motif which was revolutionary in compositional terms. This same idea is connected to the task ascribed to the five emerging composers\, 200 years on. \nMonday 14 November 2022 11am & 6pm; Melbourne Recital Centre\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour 10 mins (no interval) \nTickets: Standard $40 ($29 Concession)
