SUMMARY:Luminescence Chamber Singers: Of the Body
DESCRIPTION:In a concert that traverses sex\, sensuality\, the senses and more\, Luminescence Chamber Singers explore our corporeal form with Dan Walker’s Of The Body.\nFrom Andreas Vesalius’ groundbreaking De Humani Corporis Fabrica to the drawings of Da Vinci and Dürer\, the 16th century heralded a new fascination with the human figure. Human dissection transformed our understanding of anatomy\, and the body became the subject of scientific and artistic fixation. \nIn the spirit of Buxtehude’s much-loved Membra Jesu Nostri\, each movement of Dan Walker’s new song cycle Of The Body is devoted to an anatomical part: the eyes\, the hands\, the mouth\, the feet\, the blood\, and finally\, the heart. \nIn a concert that traverses sex\, sensuality\, the senses\, and more\, Luminescence Chamber Singers explore our relationship to our corporeal form; our flesh and blood. \nWednesday 3 July 2024 7pm \nPrimrose Potter Salon; Duration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nTICKETS: Standard $60 ($55 Concession); Student $20; Under 35 $35

SUMMARY:Anna-Lee Robertson – After Birth
DESCRIPTION:‘An Artist who has it all\, Robertson stands out from the ruck for her artistry\, confidence\, and sheer talent bursting at the seams. She is a class act.’ – Clive O’Connell The Age.\nIn After Birth\, Robertson fearlessly submits her personal life for analysis as she sets sail on a humorous\, poignant navigation of parenthood and the nature of love. Offering meditations on the modern family struggles of pandemic kid-wrangling; relationship maintenance; self-care; the limits of hospitality and the boundless capacity of the human heart\, Robertson’s inimitable wit and wisdom provide the perfect counterpoint to her extraordinary curation of vocal repertoire. \nRobertson shines as the interpreter of a genre-bending patchwork of song\, spanning old and new worlds of Broadway\, opera\, cabaret\, and art song. Sharing her consummate instrument – rich in emotion\, flush with colour\, and sparkling with agility – Robertson’s gilded voice reaches deep into your soul and plucks at your heartstrings. Her breathtaking capacity to translate music in the most profound way is a treat to the senses\, leading the audience along a musical journey at once tender and exhilarating. \n\nFriday 10 May 2024 7pm; MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

DESCRIPTION:A solo recital of blistering pianism and vivid colour.\nAward-winning artist Alex Raineri returns with a solo recital of blistering pianism and vivid colour. Praised by Limelight as a ‘a soloist of superb virtuosic skill and musicality’\, Raineri’s recital showcases beloved masterpieces by Stravinsky and Rachmaninoff\, alongside four captivating works by talented Naarm-based composers. \nAbout the concert\nOpening with one of the most famous gestures in the piano repertoire\, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Sonata No.2 distils the sweeping romanticism and grand sentiment for which the composer is so well loved. SUMMARY:Accademia Arcadia – J.S. Bach's Musical Offering
DESCRIPTION:Experience the sounds of the 18th century like never before with the only copy of a Cristofori Piano in the Southern Hemisphere.\nStep back in time to the world of 1700\, and witness the origins of a revolutionary classical approach and the invention of a new keyboard instrument that could shape and shade dynamics. Accademia Arcadia\, an Aria-nominated chamber ensemble formed by Jacqueline Ogeil\, takes audiences on a journey through baroque and early classical chamber music\, including the trio-sonata\, cantata\, early opera\, and grand liturgical genres. \nWith a timbre closer to a harpsichord\, a Cristofori piano (c.1730) features a range of 54 keys rather than the standard 88. Differing greatly to what we know as the modern piano today\, its harder hammers and thinner strings allowed pianists the ability to wonderfully express feeling and colour for the first time. \nAbout the concert\nExperience the sounds of the 18th century like never before with the only copy of a Cristofori piano in the Southern Hemisphere\, commissioned by Ogeil and supported by the late Dame Elisabeth Murdoch. Directed by internationally acclaimed Bach expert John O’Donnell\, this incredible instrument allows the performers to present a new interpretative approach to J.S. Bach’s Musical Offering. Allow Accademia Arcadia to transport you to a time of musical innovation and beauty. \n\nWednesday 8 November 2023 6pm;   MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $25 ($20 Concession)

SUMMARY:Duo Eclettico: Magic
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the magical\, the ethereal\, the demonic and the ‘other’.\nDuo Eclettico’s performance in the Primrose Potter Salon celebrates the magical\, the ethereal\, the demonic\, and the ‘other’\, with works from South Africa and Australia. Hendrik Hofmeyr\, arguably South Africa’s most celebrated living composer\, is represented with Necromancer\, a virtuosic yet beautifully colourful work evoking the magic of a necromancer\, in Hofmeyr’s writing a symbol for LGBTIQ+ sexuality and attempted repression of this by traditional conservative forces. \nPaired with Ross Edwards’ Full Moon Dances\, in a stunning arrangement for saxophone\, piano and percussion by Peter Neville. Edwards depicts the universal Moon Goddess incarnate\, source of plant life and protector of the environment\, performing a series of ritual healing ceremonies. \nThe recital culminates in the world premiere of Caerwen Martin’s major new work for soprano saxophone and piano\, The Witch of Kings Cross\, about a fascinating real-life figure – Rosaleen Norton – a poet\, writer\, artist\, philosopher and ‘witch’\, one of the most unique artists in Australia from the 1940s and 50s\, whose work was banned and prohibited by the Australian government for its overt sexuality and focus on non-traditional beliefs. A revolutionary figure\, Norton was arrested multiple times\, her books and artwork publicly burned. She became known as ‘The Witch of Kings Cross’ and is a potent example of an artist whose individuality of spirit was consistently repressed by traditional forces in the conservative Australia of the 1940s and 50s. \nCaerwen Martin’s new work\, specifically composed for Duo Eclettico and this concert\, is in several parts. One section acts as a descriptive musical depiction of Norton’s life and work. The other acts as a healing ‘spell’ for Norton\, but also invites the audience to be immersed in this ritual and hopefully find aspects that can be healing for each listener themselves. \n\nTuesday 31 October 2023\, 6pm;    MRC\,  Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:Flinders Quartet – Musical Portraits
DESCRIPTION:‘To hear someone painted in sound is the most intimate portrait.’ Zoe Knighton\nShostakovich’s incredibly powerful String Quartet No.8 was officially dedicated ‘to the memory of the victims of fascism and war’ but there is much to suggest that Shostakovich meant it as a musical self-portrait. \nSmetana’s String Quartet No.1 ‘From My Life’ is a different type of musical portrait\, taking us on a vivid\, programmatic journey through young love\, and the devastation of tinnitus. In discussing these works\, Flinders Quartet became curious about how a composer would capture their essence and commissioned Tasmanian composer Maria Grenfell to paint them in sound. It will be illuminating for Flinders Quartet to perform their very own musical portrait for audiences and look into the musical mirror to see themselves in music. \n\nMonday 30 October 2023 1pm & 6pm;   MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $40 ($30 Concession); Group 10+ $30; Student $30

SUMMARY:Duo Kirsanova-Lewis: On the Pavements Grey
DESCRIPTION:Violinist Sophia Kirsanova and pianist Georgina Lewis celebrate the diversity\, economic invention and depth of emotion of the minimalist movement. This program journeys from John Adam’s iconic Road Movies to the holy minimalism of Baltic composers Pēteris Vasks and Arvo Pärt\, and wonderful and daring composers on the fringes of the movement\, including ‘Brooklyn’s post-millennial Mozart’\, Missy Mazzoli. The duo also performs Platon Buravicky’s rarely heard\, celestial and deeply moving Angel’s Sight. \nGeorgina explores juxtapositions of freedom and discipline\, introspection and prayer\, beauty and pain in piano music from Arvo Pärt and\, closer to home\, Australia’s own Andrea Keller. Keller’s Life is Brut[if]al featured on her 2020 Journey Home album\, a response to deep study of Pärt’s compositional techniques. \nThis concert also marks a special moment with Sophia giving the Australian premiere\, and the second ever performance of Pēteris Vasks Sonata estiva (Summer Sonata) for violin solo\, with the composer’s blessing. Written in 2022 in response to the outbreak of the war in Ukraine\, the sonata was intended to bring brightness and hope\, take the world away from the harshness of reality and into a meditation on Latvian folk music and nature. \n\nWednesday 27 September 2023 6pm     MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)
