SUMMARY:Claire Chase: Sex Magic
DESCRIPTION:A riot of flutes\, electronics\, and kinetic percussion.\nDescribed by The New York Times as ‘the North Star of her instrument’s ever-expanding universe\,’ Brooklyn-based instrumentalist Claire Chase invites listeners to step into a unique sound world. SUMMARY:Kristian Chong & Friends – Quartet for the End of Time
DESCRIPTION:‘If ever there was a piece of chamber music that could be described as a masterpiece in its composer’s lifetime\, this is it.’ – Gramophone\nAcclaimed pianist Kristian Chong\, along with friends and colleagues\, returns to the Primrose Potter Salon for a performance of a must-hear piece of musical storytelling. \nWith its eight movements\, each telling a unique yet connected story\, Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time is often considered the composer’s magnum opus… and for good reason! Written in the most emotionally demanding of circumstances – while Messiaen was a prisoner-of-war during World War II – the unusual instrumentation was not by design. Rather\, in response to the instruments on hand among the camp’s musician inmates: violin\, cello\, clarinet\, and piano. \nThroughout his life\, Messiaen was fascinated with birdsong\, and he regularly included similar melodies in his compositions. Once quoted as saying ‘I doubt that one can find in any human music\, however inspired\, melodies and rhythms that have the sovereign freedom of bird song’\, Messiaen prefaces each of the movements in Quartet for the End of Time with references to blackbirds and nightingales. \nIn his third movement\, Abîme des oiseaux (Abyss of the Birds)\, Messiaen wrote ‘The abyss is Time with its sadness\, its weariness. The birds are the opposite to time; they are our desire for light\, for stars\, for rainbows\, and for jubilant songs.’ This tension between sadness and joy\, happiness and sorrow results in an eight-minute tour-de-force for solo clarinet joining spirituality and nature in what is often considered one of the most challenging solos ever written. \n\nThursday 5 September 2024 7pm \n\nPrimrose Potter Salon\n\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $50 ($40 Concession)

SUMMARY:Markiyan Melnychenko: Concert for Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Experience some of the greatest cultural treasures in Ukrainian classical music in this humanitarian fundraiser.\nAs the war in Ukraine continues into its third year\, this concert presents some of the greatest cultural treasures in Ukrainian classical music as a humanitarian fundraiser for the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital in Kyiv. \nLed by acclaimed Ukrainian-Australian violinist Markiyan Melnychenko (Churchill Fellow)\, witness what critics have described as an artist of noble sensibility and ‘admirable lyrical flexibility’ (The Age). This concert shines a spotlight on these valuable contributions\, offering not only a compelling introduction to Ukrainian classical music\, but an opportunity for deserving musical celebration. \nJoin Melnychenko in this Concert for Ukraine to support a worthy cause and discover a window into the beauty of Ukrainian culture. \n\nWednesday 28 August 2024 7pm \n\nPrimrose Potter Salon\n\nDuration: 1 hour 30 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $50 ($40 Concession)

SUMMARY:Luminescence Chamber Singers: Of the Body
DESCRIPTION:In a concert that traverses sex\, sensuality\, the senses and more\, Luminescence Chamber Singers explore our corporeal form with Dan Walker’s Of The Body.\nFrom Andreas Vesalius’ groundbreaking De Humani Corporis Fabrica to the drawings of Da Vinci and Dürer\, the 16th century heralded a new fascination with the human figure. Human dissection transformed our understanding of anatomy\, and the body became the subject of scientific and artistic fixation. \nIn the spirit of Buxtehude’s much-loved Membra Jesu Nostri\, each movement of Dan Walker’s new song cycle Of The Body is devoted to an anatomical part: the eyes\, the hands\, the mouth\, the feet\, the blood\, and finally\, the heart. \nIn a concert that traverses sex\, sensuality\, the senses\, and more\, Luminescence Chamber Singers explore our relationship to our corporeal form; our flesh and blood. \nWednesday 3 July 2024 7pm \nPrimrose Potter Salon; Duration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nTICKETS: Standard $60 ($55 Concession); Student $20; Under 35 $35

DESCRIPTION:‘An Artist who has it all\, Robertson stands out from the ruck for her artistry\, confidence\, and sheer talent bursting at the seams. She is a class act.’ – Clive O’Connell The Age.\nIn After Birth\, Robertson fearlessly submits her personal life for analysis as she sets sail on a humorous\, poignant navigation of parenthood and the nature of love.
