SUMMARY:Quartz – Schubert's Death & the Maiden
DESCRIPTION:Quartz returns to perform one of the greatest chamber works of all time.\nThe fifth movement of Australian composer Richard Meale’s String Quartet No.2 has long had a life of its own. Dedicated to the recent loss of a dear friend\, Meale’s Cantilena Pacifica achieved stand-alone fame for its lyrical violin stretching mournfully over a gentle accompaniment. \nNamed after\, and taking inspiration from\, a song he had written many years earlier\, Schubert’s Death and the Maiden – a meditation on the fragility of mortality – is one of the composer’s most acclaimed works. \nWritten at a time when Schubert himself was unwell\, Death and the Maiden tells the story of a woman pleading with Death to spare her. Pulsing with intense emotion and drama\, the stormy passages and gentle melodies throughout remain proof of Schubert’s brilliant lyricism and provide an unforgettable listening experience \nQuartz\nKathryn Taylor violin\nEmily Beauchamp violin\nMerewyn Bramble viola\nZoe Wallace cello \nRichard Meale String Quartet No.2; V. Cantilena Pacifica \nFranz Schubert String Quartet No.14 in D minor\, D 810\,  Death and the Maiden \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday 30 September 2025 – 6:00pm\nTuesday 30 September 2025 – 8:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval). SUMMARY:Rubiks Collective: The Big Idea – 10 Years of Rubiks Collective
DESCRIPTION:‘Incredibly personal\, strangely spiritual and ultimately deeply touching.’ – Limelight\nWhat if one idea changed everything? \nJourney through the sound of inspiration striking as Melbourne’s Rubiks Collective celebrates its 10th anniversary with a world premiere of The Big Idea – a genre-defying monodrama from Australian composer Matthew Shlomowitz and writer Vid Simoniti. \nAt the heart of the piece is a single character on the brink – a new idea blossoms\, a life unravels\, and we witness the tantalising chaos in between. Featuring celebrated vocalist and long-time Rubiks collaborator vocalist Lotte Betts-Dean\, The Big Idea is a story of ambition and artistic obsession that spirals from bluest desperation into delightful absurdity. \nMelbourne’s cult-favourites Rubiks Collective have established themselves as fearless innovators in Australia’s contemporary classical landscape. Hailed for creating experiences that are ‘incredibly personal\, strangely spiritual and ultimately deeply touching’ (Limelight)\, they continue to push boundaries with this production. \nCombining spoken word\, music\, and theatrical elements\, The Big Idea is an iconoclastic departure from monodramas like Schoenberg’s Expectation and Poulenc’s The Human Voice.  \nListen in as the ensemble shapeshifts from samba to Scandinavian jazz\, from late Romanticism to old-school Broadway—creating a sonic world as unpredictable as the human psyche itself. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 25 September 2025 – 6:00pm \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval). Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $37; Concession $30

SUMMARY:Melbourne Recital Centre: Stephen McIntyre plays Schumann
DESCRIPTION:Explore a world of romantic imagination.\nLegendary Melbourne pianist Stephen McIntyre returns to the Primrose Potter Salon to present an intimate evening of Schumann at his most personal and poetic. \nOpening with the rarely performed Bunte Blätter (Coloured Leaves)\, this treasure trove of musical miniatures represent Schumann’s unpredictable genius. Ranging from tender lullabies to animated outbursts\, these compositions from some of Schumann’s most creative years were collected and later shared with the world as a cherished album of musical memories. \nConsidered one of the greatest love letters ever written\, Schumann crafted Fantasie in C while separated from his beloved Clara. A passionate masterpiece with soaring moments of heart-wrenching tenderness\, in McIntyre’s hands Schumann’s romantic spirit comes to life in what the great composer himself described as ‘perhaps the most impassioned music I have ever written.’ \nThursday 18 September 2025 – 7:00pm \nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval). Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nRobert Schumann Bunte Blätter\, Op. 99; Fantasie in C\, Op.17 \nTickets: Standard $50; Concession $40

SUMMARY:Selby & Friends: Songs Without Words
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating master composers Mendelssohn\, Chopin\, and Schubert with Anne Cawrse’s tribute and beloved trios.\nWhat a delightful way to introduce the true song masters – Mendelssohn (both Fanny and Felix)\, Chopin and Schubert! Australian composer Anne Cawrse composed her lovely work as a special commission by the ABC and it reflects on the special relationship between the Mendelssohn siblings. Chopin’s beautiful and only piano trio follows and it is no surprise that it envelops his uncanny ability to create repose\, virtuosity and drama. Schubert’s sizable final piano trio\, composed shortly before his death\, closes this stunning program encompassing the composers we adore for their genius with song. \nAllie Osborne returns for this program with Katie Hewgill\, SSO Principal Cellist and an old friend who is warmly welcomed to Selby & Friends for the first time in 2025. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMonday 15 September 2025 – 2:00pm\nMonday 15 September 2025 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $81 ($63 Concession); Senior $79; Student $63 \nPlease note\, seating in the Primrose Potter Salon is General Admission.

SUMMARY:Kristian Chong & Friends – Quartet for the End of Time
DESCRIPTION:‘If ever there was a piece of chamber music that could be described as a masterpiece in its composer’s lifetime\, this is it.’ – Gramophone\nAcclaimed pianist Kristian Chong\, along with friends and colleagues\, returns to the Primrose Potter Salon for a performance of a must-hear piece of musical storytelling. \nWith its eight movements\, each telling a unique yet connected story\, Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time is often considered the composer’s magnum opus… and for good reason! Written in the most emotionally demanding of circumstances – while Messiaen was a prisoner-of-war during World War II – the unusual instrumentation was not by design. Rather\, in response to the instruments on hand among the camp’s musician inmates: violin\, cello\, clarinet\, and piano. \nThroughout his life\, Messiaen was fascinated with birdsong\, and he regularly included similar melodies in his compositions. Once quoted as saying ‘I doubt that one can find in any human music\, however inspired\, melodies and rhythms that have the sovereign freedom of bird song’\, Messiaen prefaces each of the movements in Quartet for the End of Time with references to blackbirds and nightingales. \nIn his third movement\, Abîme des oiseaux (Abyss of the Birds)\, Messiaen wrote ‘The abyss is Time with its sadness\, its weariness. The birds are the opposite to time; they are our desire for light\, for stars\, for rainbows\, and for jubilant songs.’ This tension between sadness and joy\, happiness and sorrow results in an eight-minute tour-de-force for solo clarinet joining spirituality and nature in what is often considered one of the most challenging solos ever written. \n\nThursday 5 September 2024 7pm \n\nPrimrose Potter Salon\n\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $50 ($40 Concession)

DESCRIPTION:Experience some of the greatest cultural treasures in Ukrainian classical music in this humanitarian fundraiser.\nAs the war in Ukraine continues into its third year\, this concert presents some of the greatest cultural treasures in Ukrainian classical music as a humanitarian fundraiser for the Okhmatdyt children’s hospital in Kyiv. \nLed by acclaimed Ukrainian-Australian violinist Markiyan Melnychenko (Churchill Fellow)\, witness what critics have described as an artist of noble sensibility and ‘admirable lyrical flexibility’ (The Age). Joined by some of Melbourne’s finest musicians\, this concert features music by Ukrainian composers and Australian premieres yet to be experienced by Australian audiences. \nUkrainian composers and their valuable contributions to the treasury of global culture have not been represented\, nor celebrated\, due to centuries of cultural oppression and foreign occupation. This concert shines a spotlight on these valuable contributions\, offering not only a compelling introduction to Ukrainian classical music\, but an opportunity for deserving musical celebration. \nJoin Melnychenko in this Concert for Ukraine to support a worthy cause and discover a window into the beauty of Ukrainian culture. \n\nWednesday 28 August 2024 7pm \n\nPrimrose Potter Salon\n\nDuration: 1 hour 30 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $50 ($40 Concession)
