SUMMARY:The Australian Haydn Ensemble: MOZART’S SPRING
DESCRIPTION:Mozart\, Haydn & Mendelssohn.\nThe Australian Haydn Ensemble makes its Melbourne debut. \nTo set the spring tone\, the concert opens with Haydn’s chirpy and charming quartet Op.33 No.3\, known as the Bird. Named after an unidentified avian\, it features a spirited à la russe finale\, a glowing and lovely Adagio and a second movement that’s wild even by Haydn’s standards! \nIt’s hard to believe Mendelssohn was only 14 when he wrote his E-flat Quartet (MWV R18). Though rarely heard\, it feels instantly familiar\, especially its beautiful Adagio\, and the sheer imagination and maturity are astonishing. \nIt’s not known who christened it Spring but Mozart’s String Quartet No.14 K.387 is as fresh as its nickname suggests. All four players toss multiple tunes playfully at each other and\, just when you think Mozart’s hooks can’t keep coming\, he surprises you yet again. \nA great way to discover AHE’s signature verve\, warmth and style. \nArtists: Skye McIntosh violin; Matthew Greco violin; Karina Schmitz viola; Daniel Yeadon cello \nJoseph Haydn  String Quartet Op.33 No.3 in C Bird \nFelix Mendelssohn  String Quartet in E flat MWV R18 \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart  String Quartet No. 14 in G K. 387 Spring \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nWednesday 11 March 2026 – 7:00pm\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $60 ($45 Concession); Senior $55 \nPlease note\, seating in the Primrose Potter Salon is General Admission.

SUMMARY:Affinity Quartet – Incantation
DESCRIPTION:Three profoundly moving works from the 18th century to the present.\nConsidered a groundbreaking work from the moment it premiered in 1893\, Debussy’s only string quartet\, with its shimmering textures and innovative harmonies\, transports audiences to an impressionistic world. A defining moment in chamber music\, Debussy left an undeniable mark on future composers including French-born Héloïse Werner. \nDescribed as ‘a composer of subtle imagination’ (Gramophone)\, Werner’s Incantation in Four Parts blurs the boundaries between the four instrumentalists to take listeners on a journey of play and discovery. In this Melbourne premiere\, presented alongside the emotional depths of Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue in C minor\, Affinity Quartet showcase their impressive performance prowess described by critics as ‘flawless’ (Limelight). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday 07 November 2025 – 2:00pm\nFriday 07 November 2025 – 6:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval). SUMMARY:The Cloud Maker
DESCRIPTION:Ancient goddesses breathe through modern masters.\nTaking to the stage like a revelation\, The Cloud Maker—five extraordinary female musicians—conjure something culturally transcendent. \nBorn on the snow-capped peaks of Canada and refined in the Adelaide Hills\, The Cloud Maker’s music reimagines powerful goddess mythologies through an intoxicating instrumental palette: Te Kahureremoa Taumata’s ancestral Maori Tāonga Pūoro (including hauntingly beautiful nose and bone flutes)\, Aviva Endean’s experimental approach to clarinets and winds\, Freya Schack-Arnott’s emotionally charged cello and Nordic nyckelharpa\, Maria Moles’ propulsive drumming\, and Sunny Kim’s evocative vocals. \nFresh from electrifying performances at WOMADelaide and Phoenix Central Park\, these five boundary-pushing virtuosos don Kate Davis’ mesmerising costumes to physically embody their mythic inspirations. Fierce battles\, shamanic rituals\, and journeys to the afterlife unfold\, rendered in sound that feels simultaneously ancient and boldly contemporary. \nArtists The Cloud Maker\nAviva Endean clarinets/winds/electronics\nTe Kahureremoa Taumata taonga pūoro/voice\nSunny Kim voice\nFreya Schack-Arnott cello/nyckelharpa\nMaria Moles drums\nKate Davis costume design \nProgram The Cloud Maker\nKaranga\nA Moonlit Song Carried on the Wind\nWeaving a Trance\nSelkie Shimmer\nDaughters of the Forest\nShaman Dance\nThe Godly River\nVoyage at Sea\nBlood for the Earth\nBattles \nThursday 30 October 2025 – 6:00pm \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval). SUMMARY:Flinders Quartet – Australia Fair?Fli
DESCRIPTION:Flinders Quartet’s 25th season concludes with Dvořák and works by Australian composers Cheetham Fraillon and Marks.\nAs Flinders Quartet celebrates their 25th anniversary\, they reflect on their identity as an Australian chamber ensemble\, curating a concert program of works in which the composers were likely pondering similar questions: who are we\, who were we\, and who do we want to be? \nFlinders Quartet revisit’s Deborah Cheetham Fraillon’s powerful and evocative string quartet\, Bungaree\, first premiered in 2020. Bungaree is a figure who should be an Australian household name\, and thanks to Deborah\, he is now part of Flinders Quartet idea of Australia’s\, and their own\, identity. \nAustralia Fair? by Bryony Marks asks us to think about very important and fundamental questions about identity. And Dvořák wrote his last chamber work\, the A flat string quartet\, at the very end of his time in America. Although he was inspired by the lush prairies and woods he was introduced to there\, his musical identity was still so connected to his love of the landscape of his homeland\, the Czech Republic. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nArtists: Elizabeth Sellars Violin; Wilma Smith Violin; Helen Ireland Viola; Zoe Knighton Cello \nDeborah Cheetham Fraillon Bungaree  Commissioned by Flinders Quartet with support from Andrew Dixon\, in memory of Jean and John Dixon. \nBryony Marks Australia Fair? Volume I: ‘The Australian Dream’ \nAntonín Dvořák String Quartet No.14 in A flat Op.105 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday 29 October 2025 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Presented by Julian Bailey: Bachonteur
DESCRIPTION:Julian Bailey presents the music of J.S. Bach\, with a personal twist.\nVirtually dropped into the performer’s living room\, in this chamber performance Julian will encourage you to discover the magic of these 48 ancient works as human gems of melodic communication\, not simply written for technical mastery of the keyboard. \nYou will learn something about the performer and more about the music he plays. Many of us know some of these works\, but maybe we comprehend less about the purpose of the set\, the function of a Prelude\, the narrative nature of Fugues\, or even how the piano offers more through a technical complexity that was not available to the original performer on the harpsichord. \nThe knowledgeable listener will find the musical arc of the works amplified\, while the humble enthusiast will find much to grow their respect for the master composer. \nJohann Sebastian Bach Well Tempered Clavier\, Book 1\, Preludes and Fugues 1-24 BWV 846-869 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday 18 October 2025 – 4:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 3 hours (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Alma Moodie Quartet play Haydn and Brahms
DESCRIPTION:A masterful performance of two undisputed chamber music masterpieces.\nExperience the transcendent beauty of chamber music as the acclaimed Alma Moodie Quartet presents two undisputed masterpieces. \nOpening with pristine elegance\, Haydn’s ‘Emperor’ Quartet’s true splendour comes alive in the second movement – a set of variations on the melody he composed for Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser\, which later became the German national anthem. As noble themes pass from instrument to instrument\, so too builds the complexity and richness of this great work.  \nHaving already declared his retirement\, Brahms was lured back to his love of composition upon hearing acclaimed clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld. With profound emotional depths\, his Clarinet Quintet is a true return to form\, intertwining woodwind and strings through conversations of heart-stopping tenderness and nostalgic beauty. Illuminating every nuance of this personal work\, Alma Moodie Quartet\, joined by guest clarinetist Olivia Hans-Rosenbaum\, masterfully showcases Brahms’ heart-stopping tenderness and nostalgic beauty. \nAlma Moodie Quartet : Kristian Winther violin ; Anna da Silva Chen violin\nJames Wannan viola ; Miles Mullins-Chivers cello \nOlivia Hans-Rosenbaum clarinet (guest) \nJoseph Haydn String Quartet No.62 in C\, Op.76 No.3\, Hob.III:77 ‘Emperor’ \nJohannes Brahms Clarinet Quintet in B minor\, Op.115 \nThursday 16 October 2025 – 6:00pm \nDuration: 1 hour 10 mins (no interval). Beethoven’s Sonata for Piano and Horn was written for the natural horn\, while Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata was composed for the arpeggione—essentially a bowed guitar! \nThe Schubert sonata is revered and frequently performed on various instruments\, while Beethoven’s work is an early masterwork that brims with vitality and vibrancy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday 04 October 2025 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval). Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStandard $53 ($42 Concession); Student $20 \nPlease note\, seating in the Primrose Potter Salon is General Admission.

SUMMARY:Luminescence Chamber Singers: Garden of Earthly Delights
DESCRIPTION:Hieronymus Bosch’s dreamscape of temptation and transgression. \nA garden teeming with temptation and desire\, grotesque creatures and improbable scenes of surrender: the uninhibited world of Hieronymus Bosch’s 500-year-old triptych ‘De tuin der lusten’. Baffling his Dutch contemporaries and the casual tourists in Madrid’s Prado in equal measure (not to mention generations of art critics) Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights is ever-enigmatic. Whether it is interpreted as a paradise of indulgence or as a stark warning about moral decay during a time of rapid change\, this art exudes dread and seduction in equal measure. \nTrust Luminescence Chamber Singers to turn this surreal feast of the senses into an aural tapestry as pleasurable and perilous as Bosch’s vision. From Renaissance raunch to daring modern transgressions\, Garden of Earthly Delights offers a vocal cornucopia of surprise and surreptitiously cheeky delight. \nAudiences are advised that some works in this concert contain coarse or explicit language\, sexual references and adult themes. SUMMARY:Quartz – Schubert's Death & the Maiden
DESCRIPTION:Quartz returns to perform one of the greatest chamber works of all time.\nThe fifth movement of Australian composer Richard Meale’s String Quartet No.2 has long had a life of its own. Dedicated to the recent loss of a dear friend\, Meale’s Cantilena Pacifica achieved stand-alone fame for its lyrical violin stretching mournfully over a gentle accompaniment. \nNamed after\, and taking inspiration from\, a song he had written many years earlier\, Schubert’s Death and the Maiden – a meditation on the fragility of mortality – is one of the composer’s most acclaimed works. \nWritten at a time when Schubert himself was unwell\, Death and the Maiden tells the story of a woman pleading with Death to spare her. Pulsing with intense emotion and drama\, the stormy passages and gentle melodies throughout remain proof of Schubert’s brilliant lyricism and provide an unforgettable listening experience \nQuartz\nKathryn Taylor violin\nEmily Beauchamp violin\nMerewyn Bramble viola\nZoe Wallace cello \nRichard Meale String Quartet No.2; V. Cantilena Pacifica \nFranz Schubert String Quartet No.14 in D minor\, D 810\,  Death and the Maiden \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday 30 September 2025 – 6:00pm\nTuesday 30 September 2025 – 8:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval). SUMMARY:Rubiks Collective: The Big Idea – 10 Years of Rubiks Collective
DESCRIPTION:‘Incredibly personal\, strangely spiritual and ultimately deeply touching.’ – Limelight\nWhat if one idea changed everything? \nJourney through the sound of inspiration striking as Melbourne’s Rubiks Collective celebrates its 10th anniversary with a world premiere of The Big Idea – a genre-defying monodrama from Australian composer Matthew Shlomowitz and writer Vid Simoniti. \nAt the heart of the piece is a single character on the brink – a new idea blossoms\, a life unravels\, and we witness the tantalising chaos in between. Featuring celebrated vocalist and long-time Rubiks collaborator vocalist Lotte Betts-Dean\, The Big Idea is a story of ambition and artistic obsession that spirals from bluest desperation into delightful absurdity. \nMelbourne’s cult-favourites Rubiks Collective have established themselves as fearless innovators in Australia’s contemporary classical landscape. Hailed for creating experiences that are ‘incredibly personal\, strangely spiritual and ultimately deeply touching’ (Limelight)\, they continue to push boundaries with this production. \nCombining spoken word\, music\, and theatrical elements\, The Big Idea is an iconoclastic departure from monodramas like Schoenberg’s Expectation and Poulenc’s The Human Voice.  \nListen in as the ensemble shapeshifts from samba to Scandinavian jazz\, from late Romanticism to old-school Broadway—creating a sonic world as unpredictable as the human psyche itself. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 25 September 2025 – 6:00pm \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval). SUMMARY:Selby & Friends: Songs Without Words
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating master composers Mendelssohn\, Chopin\, and Schubert with Anne Cawrse’s tribute and beloved trios.\nWhat a delightful way to introduce the true song masters – Mendelssohn (both Fanny and Felix)\, Chopin and Schubert! Australian composer Anne Cawrse composed her lovely work as a special commission by the ABC and it reflects on the special relationship between the Mendelssohn siblings. Chopin’s beautiful and only piano trio follows and it is no surprise that it envelops his uncanny ability to create repose\, virtuosity and drama. Schubert’s sizable final piano trio\, composed shortly before his death\, closes this stunning program encompassing the composers we adore for their genius with song. \nAllie Osborne returns for this program with Katie Hewgill\, SSO Principal Cellist and an old friend who is warmly welcomed to Selby & Friends for the first time in 2025. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMonday 15 September 2025 – 2:00pm\nMonday 15 September 2025 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval).
