SUMMARY:Quartz – Sweet Disposition
DESCRIPTION:Beauty and elegance meets skill and maturity.\nAcclaimed Melbourne string quartet Quartz are a confluence of Australian musical talent and world-class technique. Their exciting yet sensitive interpretations of great masterpieces of the string quartet repertoire are a delight to hear and much loved by audiences. \nAbout the concert\nTheir performance in Primrose Potter Salon presents notable works for the string quartet by Mozart and Mendelssohn. Finding himself in dire financial straits\, Mozart set out to write six quartets for the Prussian King\, Friedrich Wilhelm II. The quartets paid poorly\, forcing Mozart to give them away ‘for a mere song’. The first of these quartets is a perfectly proportioned work of beauty and elegance\, featuring the four instrumentalists as soloists exchanging an intimate dialogue that is clear and melodious. \nBorn into a wealthy Berlin family\, Mendelssohn’s parents encouraged him to spend several years abroad when he turned twenty. These were busy years for him; his performing and conducting careers blossomed. His first string quartet is among the notable works that he produced during this time\, skillfully crafted with maturity well beyond his years. \n\nTuesday 5 December 2023 6pm;     MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:ELISION: The Table of Knowledge
DESCRIPTION:For their performance in Primrose Potter Salon\, ELISION traverses the contrabass solo Table of Knowledge which gives this performance its title and refers to a section of the Medieval-inspired garden of the Cistercian Abbey of Royaumont in Asnières-sur-Oise\, France visited by composer Liza Lim in 2010. \nArrayed there were psychotropic and poisonous plants including some of the typical ingredients of a hallucinogenic mixture known as ‘witches’ flying ointment’: datura\, belladonna\, henbane and cannabis. These plants are understood in various traditions in Europe and Asia as ‘pharmakon’ – both poison and remedy\, where their potentially lethal toxic properties are employed for ritual and medicinal purposes. \nThe idea of dangerous\, compelling and wildly crafted sonic imaginations continues with a program comprising Richard Barrett’s ferocious and unrelenting splinter\, Einar Torfi Einarsson’s implosive and subterranean graphic score and trios for percussion\, harp and contrabass by Mary Bellamy and Dominik Karski which deliver energising and beguiling alternative folk music. \nELISION presents one of the most interesting contrabass performances from young virtuosi Kathryn Schulmeister and Rohan Dasika; rare flights of the imagination from some of the amazing composers of our time. \n\nSaturday 9 September 2023 7.30pm;    MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:Cristina Russo & Adam Cook – I Will Follow You Into the Dark
DESCRIPTION:Unite through music\, love\, and loss.\nFrom Purcell to Death Cab for Cutie\, this program explores the nature of love; from its first frisson of excitement to the inevitable anguish of heartache and loss. \nTravelling through over 400 years of music\, journey through folk\, early baroque\, opera and indie rock. Despite the time that separates these genres\, the message is clear: love is eternal\, and sorrow a necessary part of the human condition. \nCarefully crafted musical segues unite seemingly disparate pieces\, suggesting the program in its entirety is one unified work with a beating emotional undercurrent throughout. \nThrough exploring her Italian-Australian background in sourcing works\, Cristina says this performance serves as a ‘reminder that there is more that unites than divides us in our pluralistic society.’ \n\nSaturday 5 August 2023 7pm;   Primrose Potter Salon;   Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:Rupert Guenther: New Letters To Esterhazy
DESCRIPTION:Violin recital by Rupert Guenther\nRupert Guenther is a new type of violinist-composer\, specialising in bespoke performances of his own highly evocative improvisations. His unique form of creative artistry is a highly personal response to life\, just as a painter paints his pictures onto a blank canvas. \nAbout the concert\nOn this world premiere tour of New Letters To Esterhazy\, the artist presents yet another full concert of his classical improvisations. Each movement depicts imaginary letters sent back in time to Austrian musician Joseph Haydn in the 18th century Austro-Hungarian court of Esterhazy. Rupert Guenther has independently released over 25 albums. This sonata was one of five new albums of the artist’s improvisations commissioned and recorded by ABC Classic FM. The music is full of sunlight\, appreciation and hope\, yet tenderly handles moments of despair\, the winter darkness\, and delicate new growth with great compassion. \nThe concert concludes with three short contemplative works Hakone Maple styled on the ancient tradition of Japanese shakuhachi flute music\, So Many Stars\, an Arabic-influenced composition\, and Wandjina\, a short work describing the mythological Wandjina figure and its relationship with the Australian desert landscape and the ancient culture of the land. \n\nWednesday 26 July 2023 7pm;  MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon;  Duration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $75 ($65 Concession);  Under 30 $33

SUMMARY:Kung Fu Cellist – extra/ordinary
