SUMMARY:Bach Cello Suites – Part I
DESCRIPTION:Experience Bach’s mastery come to life in this intimate performance of his greatest works for cello.\nThe beauty of Bach is on full display in this performance of the great composer’s suites for solo cello in the Primrose Potter Salon. Featuring three of the total six – No.1 in G\, No.4 in E-flat\, and No.6 in D – each performed by a different\, and highly distinguished cellist\, this celebration of Bach’s mastery is the perfect performance for classical aficionados and those seeking a beautifully relaxing night out. \nOpening the performance\, Principal Cellist of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra\, David Berlin\, performs one of the most recognisable pieces of classical music ever written: Bach’s Cello Suite No.1 in G. With its famously serene prelude\, this Suite’s melodic simplicity and emotional depth craft an environment of reflection and tranquillity\, setting the tone for 75 minutes of unforgettable music. \nThe complex yet incredibly rich structure of Suite No.4 in E-flat follows\, with internationally celebrated Richard Narroway. Having recorded all six suites in 2017 to critical acclaim\, including being described by Gramophone as ‘riveting… an adventure in expressive possibility\,’ Richard returns to Melbourne Recital Centre for arguably the grandest of all six. With its imposing prelude to open\, the following movements offer a striking\, and introspective\, contrast. \nFinally\, Josephine Vains closes the performance with the longest and most intricate of the Suites\, Bach’s Cello Suite No.6 in D. Using the unique 5-string baroque cello\, Josephine’s ‘expressive soloist’ (The Age) talents are on full display from the moment she takes to the stage until the final note. This uplifting piece features elegant French dance movements that are lively and joyous\, sure to put a smile on anyone’s face. \n\nTuesday 24 September 2024 7pm \n\nPrimrose Potter Salon\n\nDuration: 1 hour 35 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $59 ($49 Concession) – Currently sold out

SUMMARY:David Greco and Chad Kelly – Schubert's Die schöne Müllerin
DESCRIPTION:A fresh and vibrant take on Schubert.\nClassical luminaries David Greco and Chad Kelly combine their considerable talents in this interpretation of Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin (The Maid of the Mill). \nComposed in 1823\, this iconic work is one of the earliest extended song cycles and one of Schubert’s most important works. In Die schöne Müllerin\, we meet a young man with thoughts of love. Just one glimpse of the miller’s daughter at the window and he’s smitten\, but in vain\, for she loves another. The song cycle is loved for its breathtaking complexity\, intense originality and the rich melodies that carved Schubert’s reputation as a genius of the lieder genre. \nConcert update: Due to injury\, pianist Erin Helyard is sorry to advise that he is withdrawing from this performance of Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin with David Greco. Together with David Greco\, Erin Helyard is delighted to welcome pianist Chad Kelly in his place. \nFriday 9 August 2024 7pm\nDuration: 1 hour 10 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nMelbourne Recital Centre\, Primrose Potter Salon \nTICKETS: Standard $50 ($40 Concession)

SUMMARY:Quartz – Sweet Disposition
DESCRIPTION:Beauty and elegance meets skill and maturity.\nAcclaimed Melbourne string quartet Quartz are a confluence of Australian musical talent and world-class technique. Their exciting yet sensitive interpretations of great masterpieces of the string quartet repertoire are a delight to hear and much loved by audiences. \nAbout the concert\nTheir performance in Primrose Potter Salon presents notable works for the string quartet by Mozart and Mendelssohn. Finding himself in dire financial straits\, Mozart set out to write six quartets for the Prussian King\, Friedrich Wilhelm II. The quartets paid poorly\, forcing Mozart to give them away ‘for a mere song’. The first of these quartets is a perfectly proportioned work of beauty and elegance\, featuring the four instrumentalists as soloists exchanging an intimate dialogue that is clear and melodious. \nBorn into a wealthy Berlin family\, Mendelssohn’s parents encouraged him to spend several years abroad when he turned twenty. These were busy years for him; his performing and conducting careers blossomed. His first string quartet is among the notable works that he produced during this time\, skillfully crafted with maturity well beyond his years. \n\nTuesday 5 December 2023 6pm;     MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)
