SUMMARY:Kristian Chong & Friends: Majestic Celebrations
DESCRIPTION:Nicolas Fleury\, Brigid Coleridge\, and pianist Kristian Chong unite for a harmonious musical synergy.\nJoining forces with Kristian Chong\, Principal Horn of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra\, Nicolas Fleury\, and acclaimed violinist Brigid Coleridge from the US-based Merz Trio showcase their talents in two powerful compositions. \nWritten in 1982\, Ligeti wrote his formidable Trio as a companion to Brahms’ Horn Trio one of the few other examples in the genre\, marked Hommage à Brahms\, and is a wild journey through its four movements\, delivering every gamut of human emotion like its counterpart. Brahms’ trio is one of the canonic works of the chamber music repertoire\, showing the vulnerability of human emotion in every way. \nA rare chance to hear these companion works played by three consummate musicians. \n\nSaturday 9 November 2024 7pm \n\nPrimrose Potter Salon\n\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $50 ($40 Concession); Student $15

SUMMARY:Penny Quartet – INPOUR
DESCRIPTION:Step into the vibrant and eclectic world of string quartet repertoire.\nPenny Quartet has gained a reputation as an ambitious and multifaceted voice in Australian chamber music. Fueled by a passion for both core quartet repertoire and the exploration of new and innovative works\, they are celebrated for their high-energy performances\, paired with a creative\, diverse\, and thoughtful approach to programming. \nReturning to the intimate Primrose Potter Salon\, Penny Quartet presents a compelling program featuring three evocative works. Opening with the heart-wrenching movement ‘II. Espressivo with Wonder and Yearning’ by Jamaican composer Eleanor Alberga\, this immersive composition draws listeners in with its simmering\, slow-burning tension. The evening takes an introspective and resolute turn with Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet No.11\, an emotionally charged masterpiece that mirrors the composer’s personal and artistic turmoil. This enthralling evening will conclude with the world premiere of an exciting new work commissioned by Melbourne Recital Centre and the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music\, written by Australian composer Kym Alexandra Dillon. \nThe Melbourne Recital Centre/Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Composition Award was made possible from 2016 – 2019 with the support Majlis Pty Ltd\, and from 2020 with the support of Ms Jane Kunstler. \n\nFriday 1 November 2024 7pm \n\nPrimrose Potter Salon\n\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:Goldner String Quartet – Encounter
DESCRIPTION:30 years of outstanding music-making concludes with a fitting finale and farewell.\nIn what is both beautiful and bittersweet for the chamber music community of music-lovers and music-makers alike\, the Goldner String Quartet gives its last ever Melbourne performance. \nOver 30 years\, Goldner String Quartet (affectionately known as The Goldners)\, has garnered widespread recognition not only as Australia’s pre-eminent string quartet\, but as a chamber ensemble of international significance and scale. The Goldners have toured throughout Australia\, the United Kingdom\, Europe\, the United States of America\, and the Asia Pacific – applauded for their impeccable artistry and chemistry that transforms every performance into a mesmerising masterclass in chamber music. \nThe Goldners have honed their golden sound over many years to achieve an intimate and innate understanding of each of the longstanding founding members’ musical ideas and sensibilities. They’re not just collaborators\, they’re companions. \nAbout the concert\nFor their final Melbourne performance and farewell\, The Goldners have hand-picked a program that holds great meaning and significance for the ensemble. \nCarl Vine’s exquisite String Quartet No.3 is a fitting celebration for the composer’s 70th birthday year\, and whose works have featured memorably in The Goldners’ repertoire over many years. \nThe Goldners have chosen one of their favourite movements from Beethoven’s String Quartet No.15\, Op.132\, Heilige Dankgesang. This is a piece the quartet describes as a musical conduit for ‘how we can all relate to times in our lives when we have struggled to overcome illness and adversity. The extended movement is the consummate musical expression of this human condition.’ \nAnd to conclude Goldner String Quartet’s final performance\, they gift Melbourne audiences with the Australian premiere of Pēteris Vasks’ recently composed String Quartet No.6. A profound\, autumnal work that captures the feelings of a composer looking back over a long and fruitful life and drawing on much of the choral tradition of his native Latvia. \n\nThursday 31 October 2024 3pm & 7pm \n\nPrimrose Potter Salon\n\nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $69 (Concession $55) \nExperience this concert online with Australian Digital Concert Hall\nClick here for live stream tickets.

SUMMARY:Flinders Quartet – The Mendelssohns
DESCRIPTION:Flinders Quartet’s 2024 season concludes with one of its trademark curations: letters between the Mendelssohns interwoven with compositions by the Mendelssohns\, Beethoven\, and Bryony Marks.\nFanny’s son\, Sebastian Hensel\, published a collection of family correspondence\, and together with other writings from Fanny\, this special performance sees the music of Felix explored through his sister’s eyes. \nTaking inspiration from Felix’s very successful and much loved incidental music for the play\, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’\, Bryony Marks has been commissioned to write her own incidental music linking together the dramatic and musical elements of this performance\, and connecting these characters and the music that defines them. Felix Mendelssohn was heavily influenced by Beethoven’s string quartets\, becoming infatuated with Opus 132 and copying it out note by note in his journal. Like Beethoven\, Mendelssohn’s string quartets track his life: from the optimism of his first string quartet\, Opus 12\, to the tragedy of the last\, Opus 80\, which was written in response to the death of Fanny. Both composers penned their final notes in their string quartets. \nRichard Piper has collaborated with Flinders Quartet on a number of previous projects including ‘Puck’s Dream (after Midsummer)’\, the Shostakovich cycle\, and ‘Bartok\, My Father.’ \n\nWednesday 30 October 2024 7pm \n\nPrimrose Potter Salon\n\nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $45 ($35 Concession); Group 10+ $35; Student $35

SUMMARY:Bach Cello Suites – Part I
DESCRIPTION:Experience Bach’s mastery come to life in this intimate performance of his greatest works for cello.\nThe beauty of Bach is on full display in this performance of the great composer’s suites for solo cello in the Primrose Potter Salon. Featuring three of the total six – No.1 in G\, No.4 in E-flat\, and No.6 in D – each performed by a different\, and highly distinguished cellist\, this celebration of Bach’s mastery is the perfect performance for classical aficionados and those seeking a beautifully relaxing night out. \nOpening the performance\, Principal Cellist of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra\, David Berlin\, performs one of the most recognisable pieces of classical music ever written: Bach’s Cello Suite No.1 in G. With its famously serene prelude\, this Suite’s melodic simplicity and emotional depth craft an environment of reflection and tranquillity\, setting the tone for 75 minutes of unforgettable music. \nThe complex yet incredibly rich structure of Suite No.4 in E-flat follows\, with internationally celebrated Richard Narroway. Having recorded all six suites in 2017 to critical acclaim\, including being described by Gramophone as ‘riveting… an adventure in expressive possibility\,’ Richard returns to Melbourne Recital Centre for arguably the grandest of all six. With its imposing prelude to open\, the following movements offer a striking\, and introspective\, contrast. \nFinally\, Josephine Vains closes the performance with the longest and most intricate of the Suites\, Bach’s Cello Suite No.6 in D. Using the unique 5-string baroque cello\, Josephine’s ‘expressive soloist’ (The Age) talents are on full display from the moment she takes to the stage until the final note. This uplifting piece features elegant French dance movements that are lively and joyous\, sure to put a smile on anyone’s face. \n\nTuesday 24 September 2024 7pm \n\nPrimrose Potter Salon\n\nDuration: 1 hour 35 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $59 ($49 Concession) – Currently sold out
