SUMMARY:Affinity Quartet: Incantation
DESCRIPTION:Three profoundly moving works from the 18th century to the present.\nConsidered a groundbreaking work from the moment it premiered in 1893\, Debussy’s only string quartet\, with its shimmering textures and innovative harmonies\, transports audiences to an impressionistic world. A defining moment in chamber music\, Debussy left an undeniable mark on future composers including French-born Héloïse Werner. \nDescribed as ‘a composer of subtle imagination’ (Gramophone)\, Werner’s Incantation in Four Parts blurs the boundaries between the four instrumentalists to take listeners on a journey of play and discovery. In this Melbourne premiere\, presented alongside the emotional depths of Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue in C minor\, Affinity Quartet showcase their impressive performance prowess described by critics as ‘flawless’ (Limelight). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFriday 07 November 2025 – 2:00pm\nFriday 07 November 2025 – 6:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval). SUMMARY:Selby & Friends: Songs Without Words
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating master composers Mendelssohn\, Chopin\, and Schubert with Anne Cawrse’s tribute and beloved trios.\nWhat a delightful way to introduce the true song masters – Mendelssohn (both Fanny and Felix)\, Chopin and Schubert! Australian composer Anne Cawrse composed her lovely work as a special commission by the ABC and it reflects on the special relationship between the Mendelssohn siblings. Chopin’s beautiful and only piano trio follows and it is no surprise that it envelops his uncanny ability to create repose\, virtuosity and drama. Schubert’s sizable final piano trio\, composed shortly before his death\, closes this stunning program encompassing the composers we adore for their genius with song. \nAllie Osborne returns for this program with Katie Hewgill\, SSO Principal Cellist and an old friend who is warmly welcomed to Selby & Friends for the first time in 2025. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMonday 15 September 2025 – 2:00pm\nMonday 15 September 2025 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra: ACO Up Close: Shostakovich\, Silvestrov & Bach
DESCRIPTION:A deep exploration of the majesty and heartache of Shostakovich and Silvestrov chamber works\, set alongside the music of J.S. Bach.\nACO Principal Violin Satu Vänskä leads an ACO ensemble with pianist Konstantin Shamray in this moving exploration through music of majesty\, heartache\, and reflection. \nArvo Pärt called the Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov ‘one of the greatest composers of our time.’ Filled with longing and quiet contemplation\, Silvestrov’s music embraces a simplicity that is at once comforting and unexpected. In a world that runs at an ever-increasing pace\, it serves as a soothing antidote for our times. \nThe concert also features Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet\, a classic in 20th-century chamber music. Despite being composed in the shadow of World War II\, the quintet is imbued with purity and lyricism\, offering a glimpse of light amidst dark times. \nThe performance culminates in excerpts from Bach’s final masterpiece\, The Art of Fugue\, arranged for string quartet. This intricate work showcases Bach’s genius and serves as a testament to his enduring legacy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nMonday 25 August 2025 – 4:00pm\nMonday 25 August 2025 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval). SUMMARY:Flinders Quartet: Musical Friends
DESCRIPTION:Can music describe a person?\nFlinders Quartet explores this with new pieces by Eötvös\, Singh\, and Nicolas\, and Borodin’s second quartet. \nMendelssohn famously said\, ‘It’s not that music is too imprecise for words\, but too precise…’. Flinders Quartet has always loved this quote and decided to explore this idea by pairing two composers\, Melody Eötvös and Rishin Singh\, living on opposite sides of the world in a musical letter writing project. The premise being that one composer begins the conversation by writing a short section\, which is sent to the other composer who absorbs the music and writes a short section in return. Flinders Quartet are\, in effect\, the go-between. \nNatalie Nicolas’ By the Tide of the Moon captures the strength and beauty of Aida Tuciute\, a Lithuanian Olympic swimmer with a love of ocean swimming; while Borodin’s second quartet depicts the love of his wife and their first three glorious months of marriage spent in Heidelberg. The themes of love\, letter writing\, and communication through music are counterbalanced with the crystalline brilliance of Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue in C minor\, which celebrates the sheer joy of music for music’s sake alone. \nNatalie Nicolas By the Tide of the Moon – World premiere; Commissioned by Andrew Domasevicius-Zilinskas for Flinders Quartet and dedicated to Aida Tuciute\, and her beautiful kinship with the ocean. \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart Adagio and Fugue in C minor\, K.546 \nMelody Eötvös / Rishin Singh The Letter Writing Project – World premiere; Commissioned by Flinders Quartet with the support of Kim Williams AM and FQ Syndicate #6. \nAlexander Borodin String Quartet No.2 in D \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday 12 August 2025 – 7:00pm \nMRC Salon \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Jasper Ly and Peter Dumsday – TENERA
DESCRIPTION:A celebration of trailblazing women composers.\nJoin Melbourne musicians Jasper Ly (oboe) and Peter Dumsday (piano) for TENERA\, a journey through time celebrating the legacy of women composers. As advocates for new Australian music\, Ly and Dumsday bring their musical sensitivity and dynamic performance styles to this powerful program. \nFeaturing works by contemporary Australian composers\, including Nat Bartsch\, Jessica Wells\, Laura Abraham\, and Helen Gifford\, each offering a distinctive voice and approach to the modern landscape. Their compositions are presented alongside seminal works by groundbreaking women pioneers such as Clara Schumann\, Amy Beach\, Lili Boulanger\, and Marina Dranishnikova\, all of whom have left indelible marks on Western classical music. \nThis performance explores the depth\, complexity\, and beauty inherent in these underrepresented voices and seeks to shed light on the enduring legacies of women who have shaped the course of music. By blending the past and present\, TENERA illuminates the timeless relevance of these composers and their vital role in the future of instrumental music. \n‘It’s hard to capture with language the way their concert made me\, and the rest of the sold-out audience feel\, but I am certain that we all experienced a thoughtful\, thought-provoking and not-soon-forgotten performance\, that transcended its individual pieces and left us all feeling a little glow.’ – Limelight Magazine \nPlease note: this concert features smoke and haze effects. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\nJasper Ly oboe; Peter Dumsday piano \nClara Schumann Three Romances\, Op.22: No.1 – Andante molto \nAmy Beach Romance\, Op.23  \nLili Boulanger Two Pieces: No.1 – Nocturne \nMarina Dranishnikova Poem \nHelen Gifford Shiva\, the auspicious one \nJessica Wells Sati \nNat Bartsch Forever\, and No Time at All  \nLaura Abraham A Hazy Memory \nJulia Potter 20/30 (a fragment) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday 09 August 2025 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval). SUMMARY:Olivier Messiaen – Catalogue d´oiseaux
DESCRIPTION:A vibrant symphony of birdsong\, where each note captures nature’s vivid palette.\nCatalogue d’oiseaux\, published in 1958\, is Olivier Messiaen’s most extensive work after his opera Saint François d’Assise. This composition masterfully integrates the three main elements of Messiaen’s musical language: rhythm\, the relationship between sound and colour\, and birdsongs. The score is a collection of birdsong transcriptions and descriptive elements of the landscape\, presenting a true interpretative challenge for any performer. \nSpanish pianist Gregorio Benítez — praised by critics for his ‘hypnotic stage presence’ and ‘extraordinary range of piano colors’ — will present excerpts from Messiaen’s Catalogue d’oiseaux\, a milestone in 20th-century classical music. This performance celebrates the 100th birthday of pianist and muse Yvonne Loriod (1924–2010)\, who premiered the work 65 years ago. \nThis concert is also part of an international tour during which Gregorio Benítez performs the complete piano works of Olivier Messiaen. \n\nFriday 6 December 2024 7pm \n\nPrimrose Potter Salon\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $40 ($30 Concession); Student $20

DESCRIPTION:Nicolas Fleury\, Brigid Coleridge\, and pianist Kristian Chong unite for a harmonious musical synergy.\nJoining forces with Kristian Chong\, Principal Horn of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra\, Nicolas Fleury\, and acclaimed violinist Brigid Coleridge from the US-based Merz Trio showcase their talents in two powerful compositions. \nWritten in 1982\, Ligeti wrote his formidable Trio as a companion to Brahms’ Horn Trio one of the few other examples in the genre\, marked Hommage à Brahms\, and is a wild journey through its four movements\, delivering every gamut of human emotion like its counterpart. Brahms’ trio is one of the canonic works of the chamber music repertoire\, showing the vulnerability of human emotion in every way. \nA rare chance to hear these companion works played by three consummate musicians. \n\nSaturday 9 November 2024 7pm \n\nPrimrose Potter Salon\n\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $50 ($40 Concession); Student $15

SUMMARY:Goldner String Quartet – Encounter
DESCRIPTION:30 years of outstanding music-making concludes with a fitting finale and farewell.\nIn what is both beautiful and bittersweet for the chamber music community of music-lovers and music-makers alike\, the Goldner String Quartet gives its last ever Melbourne performance. \nOver 30 years\, Goldner String Quartet (affectionately known as The Goldners)\, has garnered widespread recognition not only as Australia’s pre-eminent string quartet\, but as a chamber ensemble of international significance and scale. The Goldners have toured throughout Australia\, the United Kingdom\, Europe\, the United States of America\, and the Asia Pacific – applauded for their impeccable artistry and chemistry that transforms every performance into a mesmerising masterclass in chamber music. \nThe Goldners have honed their golden sound over many years to achieve an intimate and innate understanding of each of the longstanding founding members’ musical ideas and sensibilities. They’re not just collaborators\, they’re companions. \nAbout the concert\nFor their final Melbourne performance and farewell\, The Goldners have hand-picked a program that holds great meaning and significance for the ensemble. \nCarl Vine’s exquisite String Quartet No.3 is a fitting celebration for the composer’s 70th birthday year\, and whose works have featured memorably in The Goldners’ repertoire over many years. \nThe Goldners have chosen one of their favourite movements from Beethoven’s String Quartet No.15\, Op.132\, Heilige Dankgesang. This is a piece the quartet describes as a musical conduit for ‘how we can all relate to times in our lives when we have struggled to overcome illness and adversity. The extended movement is the consummate musical expression of this human condition.’ \nAnd to conclude Goldner String Quartet’s final performance\, they gift Melbourne audiences with the Australian premiere of Pēteris Vasks’ recently composed String Quartet No.6. A profound\, autumnal work that captures the feelings of a composer looking back over a long and fruitful life and drawing on much of the choral tradition of his native Latvia. \n\nThursday 31 October 2024 3pm & 7pm \n\nPrimrose Potter Salon\n\nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $69 (Concession $55) \nExperience this concert online with Australian Digital Concert Hall\nClick here for live stream tickets.

SUMMARY:Flinders Quartet – The Mendelssohns
DESCRIPTION:Flinders Quartet’s 2024 season concludes with one of its trademark curations: letters between the Mendelssohns interwoven with compositions by the Mendelssohns\, Beethoven\, and Bryony Marks.\nFanny’s son\, Sebastian Hensel\, published a collection of family correspondence\, and together with other writings from Fanny\, this special performance sees the music of Felix explored through his sister’s eyes. \nTaking inspiration from Felix’s very successful and much loved incidental music for the play\, ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’\, Bryony Marks has been commissioned to write her own incidental music linking together the dramatic and musical elements of this performance\, and connecting these characters and the music that defines them. Felix Mendelssohn was heavily influenced by Beethoven’s string quartets\, becoming infatuated with Opus 132 and copying it out note by note in his journal. Like Beethoven\, Mendelssohn’s string quartets track his life: from the optimism of his first string quartet\, Opus 12\, to the tragedy of the last\, Opus 80\, which was written in response to the death of Fanny. Both composers penned their final notes in their string quartets. \nRichard Piper has collaborated with Flinders Quartet on a number of previous projects including ‘Puck’s Dream (after Midsummer)’\, the Shostakovich cycle\, and ‘Bartok\, My Father.’ \n\nWednesday 30 October 2024 7pm \n\nPrimrose Potter Salon\n\nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $45 ($35 Concession); Group 10+ $35; Student $35
