SUMMARY:Songmakers Australia: The Beautiful Miller’s Daughter
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating 200 years of Die Schöne Müllerin.\nUnique in the musical landscape of Australia\, Songmakers Australia brings together some of the country’s leading singers and instrumentalists in a diverse repertoire comprising some of the pinnacles of all chamber music. \nUnder the artistic patronage of Graham Johnson\, pianist Andrea Katz teams with soprano Merlyn Quaife\, mezzosoprano Christina Wilson\, tenor Brenton Spiteri and bass-baritone Nicholas Dinopoulos in inspired programs that feature a dynamic interplay of song and chamber music. \nAbout the concert\nTheir performance in Primrose Potter Salon celebrates 200 years of Die schöne Müllerin (The Fair Maid of the Mill)\, a song cycle based on 20 poems written by Wilhem Müller. \n‘I feel myself to be the most unhappy and wretched creature in the world. Imagine a man whose health will never be right again\, and who in sheer despair over this ever makes things worse and worse\, instead of better; imagine a man\, I say\, whose most brilliant hopes have perished\, to whom the happiness of love and friendship have nothing to offer but pain… My peace is gone\, my heart is sore\, I shall find it never and nevermore… I may well sing now\, for each night\, on retiring to bed\, I hope I may not wake again…’ With these poignant words Schubert described his state of mind after writing Die schöne Müllerin. \n\nWednesday 19 July 2023 6pm; MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon;  Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble – Continuo
DESCRIPTION:Always existed but never heard before.\nSpanning soul-bearing improvisations and exuberant dances\, the Baroque period represented an earth-quaking eruption of ideas and musical expression the aftershocks of which continue to be felt today. This essence has inspired the work of composers since\, who have blazed their own trails in true Baroque style with rococo flair and theatricality. \nBaroque goes ballistic in this historically (un-)informed performance\, featuring dazzling contemporary masterworks that defy expectations and break the moulds of their predecessors. \nMulti-Grammy Award winner and the youngest recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for music\, Caroline Shaw’s inventive music represents the confluence of music past and present\, with collaborations spanning the worlds leading musicians and most forward-thinking classical groups. SUMMARY:David Soo – David Soo Plays Beethoven
DESCRIPTION:A journey through Beethoven’s piano sonatas.\nDavid Soo is a prize-winning Australian concert pianist who has performed throughout Australia\, Asia\, and in Europe as a solo recitalist\, chamber musician\, and concerto soloist. He was the previous winner of Melbourne Recital Centre’s Great Romantics Competition. His consummate authority and passion make for wonderfully evocative performances. \nAbout the concert\nHis performance in Primrose Potter Salon presents a collection of Beethoven’s piano sonatas. Beethoven was arguably one of the most influential composers during the classical period. His innovative approach towards form\, textures\, harmonies and surprises embodies a new spirit of individualism that dominated pianism and musicianship in the romantic period. \nOpening with the grand and dramatic ‘Pathétique’ sonata\, Soo recites this work of great emotional depth\, which echoes Beethoven’s strength of character. Followed by Beethoven’s first piano sonata\, which was composed in 1795 and was dedicated to his teacher and mentor Franz Joseph Haydn. The recital concludes with the composer’s penultimate piano sonata No.31\, which explores human sympathy to rough country humour\, then finally from operatic despair to the safe harbour of consolation\, resolve and triumph. \n\nTuesday 28 March 2023 6pm; Primrose Potter Salon; Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $25 ($20 Concession)
