SUMMARY:Forest Collective: My Heart by Danaë Killian
DESCRIPTION:An expressionist solo piano adventure.\n‘Nights I wander the world’s city streets\, looking for you and talking to you\, my heart.’ – Danaë Killian  \nForest Collective’s star pianist Danaë Killian (The Minotaur\, Labyrinth) returns solo to Midsumma 2026 in a thrillingly intimate performance celebrating the launch of her latest album\, My Heart (Move Records). Inspired by German-Jewish Expressionist poet Else Lasker-Schüler’s novel ‘Mein Herz\,’ Danaë’s piano performance flies on a magic carpet of spoken-word improvisatory poetic threads\, which existentially obfuscate the boundaries between Danaë and Else\, as both their hearts break. Music by Danaë’s real-life composer friends wraps around these shattered hearts like an exquisitely unction-soaked\, colourful bandage. \nMusic by Evan J Lawson\, Arnold Schoenberg\, Howard Dillon\, Christine McCombe\, Amelia Barden\, Colin McKellar\, Gregers Brinch\, and Danaë Killian. Words by Danaë Killian and Else Lasker-Schüler. \nThis performance takes place on Else Lasker-Schüler’s death day and Danaë Killian’s birthday. \nPraise for Danaë Killian: ‘Utterly mesmerising’ – Australian Arts Review; ‘One of Naarm-Melbourne’s piano treasures’ – ClassikON \n‘Das Anschlagswunder’ – Aargauer Zeitung \nThis concert is part of Midsumma Festival. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgram \nDanaë Killian My Prussian Blue Heart for pianist\, tarot cards\, and piano (2017\, rev. 2024)\, movement 1 \nArnold Schoenberg Drei Klavierstücke\, Op.11 (1909) \nHoward Dillon Möbius for solo piano (2012) \nChristine McCombe Asphyxed (1991) \nDanaë Killian My Prussian Blue Heart\, movement 2 \nAmelia Barden The Seventh Centre (1992) \nColin McKellar Birth Music (2006) \nGregers Brinch Two Minds\, Op.73 (2004) \nEvan J Lawson Sikinnis III (2015) \nDanaë Killian My Prussian Blue Heart\, movement 3 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 22 January 2026 – 7:30pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour 30 mins (no interval). SUMMARY:Flinders Quartet – Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Flinders Quartet’s 2024 season opens with ‘Legacy’: music that marks history in unique and poignant ways\, with works by Mozart\, Ethel Smyth\, and Gordon Kerry.\nMusic marks history in a unique and poignant way. Mozart’s legacy is epitomised in the Dissonance Quartet which is revered for its daring harmony that broke all the rules\, as well as its soaring melodies and sense of humour. Ethel Smyth’s first string quartet displays epic vision that combines rhythmic angularity with deeply intelligent and sophisticated lyricism\, no less groundbreaking than her inspired leadership of the suffragettes. Gordon Kerry’s legacy is already evident in ensuring the essence of 21st century Australia is chronicled through sound in his timbres and driving rhythms while drawing inspiration from ancient plainchant. \n\nMonday 25 March 2024 7pm;   MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $45 ($35 Concession); Group 10+ $35; Student $35 \nThree-Concert Package $111 ($87 Concession)

SUMMARY:Tristan Lee – Between Heart & Head
DESCRIPTION:Conflicts of human nature unleashed through captivating Romantic piano masterpieces.\nEmbark on a captivating journey as acclaimed pianist Tristan Lee\, delves into the profound conflicts of human nature through three transcendent Romantic piano masterpieces. The opening bars of Beethoven’s late Piano Sonata Op.90 serve as a gateway to this exploration\, with its two movements embodying what Beethoven’s biographer\, Schindler\, describes as a relentless ‘struggle between the heart and the head\, and a conversation with the beloved’. As the program surges forward in Chopin’s fiercely ironic Scherzo No.3 Op.39\, in C minor\, be immersed in a world of ferocious octave passages set against moments of sublime beauty and poetic lyricism. \nLee’s command over these compositions is enriched by his profound familiarity with Liszt\, a composer who revered and regularly performed the works featured in this program. Liszt’s monumental one-movement Sonata\, often associated with the Faustian legend and its moral dilemmas bears the imprint of the preceding masterpieces\, displaying their unmistakable influence. \nLudwig van Beethoven Piano Sonata No.27 in E minor\, Op.90 \nFrédéric Chopin Scherzo No.3 in C-sharp minor\, Op.39 \nFranz Liszt Sonata in B Minor S. 178\, S. 178 \n\nTuesday 28 November 2023 6pm; MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:Songmakers Australia: The Beautiful Miller’s Daughter
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating 200 years of Die Schöne Müllerin.\nUnique in the musical landscape of Australia\, Songmakers Australia brings together some of the country’s leading singers and instrumentalists in a diverse repertoire comprising some of the pinnacles of all chamber music. \nUnder the artistic patronage of Graham Johnson\, pianist Andrea Katz teams with soprano Merlyn Quaife\, mezzosoprano Christina Wilson\, tenor Brenton Spiteri and bass-baritone Nicholas Dinopoulos in inspired programs that feature a dynamic interplay of song and chamber music. \nAbout the concert\nTheir performance in Primrose Potter Salon celebrates 200 years of Die schöne Müllerin (The Fair Maid of the Mill)\, a song cycle based on 20 poems written by Wilhem Müller. \n‘I feel myself to be the most unhappy and wretched creature in the world. Imagine a man whose health will never be right again\, and who in sheer despair over this ever makes things worse and worse\, instead of better; imagine a man\, I say\, whose most brilliant hopes have perished\, to whom the happiness of love and friendship have nothing to offer but pain… My peace is gone\, my heart is sore\, I shall find it never and nevermore… I may well sing now\, for each night\, on retiring to bed\, I hope I may not wake again…’ With these poignant words Schubert described his state of mind after writing Die schöne Müllerin. \n\nWednesday 19 July 2023 6pm; MRC\, Primrose Potter Salon;  Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:David Soo – David Soo Plays Beethoven
DESCRIPTION:A journey through Beethoven’s piano sonatas.\nDavid Soo is a prize-winning Australian concert pianist who has performed throughout Australia\, Asia\, and in Europe as a solo recitalist\, chamber musician\, and concerto soloist. He was the previous winner of Melbourne Recital Centre’s Great Romantics Competition. His consummate authority and passion make for wonderfully evocative performances. \nAbout the concert\nHis performance in Primrose Potter Salon presents a collection of Beethoven’s piano sonatas. Beethoven was arguably one of the most influential composers during the classical period. His innovative approach towards form\, textures\, harmonies and surprises embodies a new spirit of individualism that dominated pianism and musicianship in the romantic period. \nOpening with the grand and dramatic ‘Pathétique’ sonata\, Soo recites this work of great emotional depth\, which echoes Beethoven’s strength of character. Followed by Beethoven’s first piano sonata\, which was composed in 1795 and was dedicated to his teacher and mentor Franz Joseph Haydn. The recital concludes with the composer’s penultimate piano sonata No.31\, which explores human sympathy to rough country humour\, then finally from operatic despair to the safe harbour of consolation\, resolve and triumph. \n\nTuesday 28 March 2023 6pm; Primrose Potter Salon; Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $25 ($20 Concession)

Its counterpart\, designed compositions following clear rules\, which have often evolved from improvisational practice\, is another recurring motif. These two concepts unite and challenge one another\, offering an artistic and musical antithesis. \nAnna curates a captivating and entertaining time travel through 800 years of recorder repertoire performed by one of the foremost recorder soloists of recent times\, traversing music from the Middle Ages to the 21st Century. \n\nMonday 23 January 2023 6pm; MRC Primrose Potter salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTickets: Standard $25 ($20 Concession)

SUMMARY:Vardos- From the Caravan to the Club
DESCRIPTION:Vardos trace the beloved Roma musical tradition to its Eastern sources. In contemporary Romania synthesisers and electric violins have crept in\, but here Vardos play traditional instruments in the classic ‘Taraf’ formation of violin\, accordion and double bass\, with vocal laments and ballads in Romanian and Romani (Gypsy) language. These rousing works unearth a trove of mysterious and exotic wonders.
