SUMMARY:Firebird Trio: Entanglements
DESCRIPTION:Program\nJohannes Brahms\nScherzo in C minor from the F-A-E Sonata \nClara Schumann\n3 Romances \nRobert Schumann\nAdagio and Allegro\nPiano Trio No.2 in F \nAbout the artists\nFirebird Trio has performed nationwide to critical acclaim\, with a vibrancy of imagination that echoes its name\, bringing energy\, colour and splendour to their live experiences. This performance will see the trio celebrate the musical entanglement of the Schumanns with Johannes Brahms in a specially curated concert of duos and piano trios. \nAbout the concert\nOpening with the spirited Scherzo from the F-A-E Sonata\, based on a musical cryptogram of the motto ‘Frei aber einsam’ or ‘Free but lonely’\, the movement reveals a young composer already at the height of his craft. Moving into Clara Schumann’s Three Romances\, composed for the violin virtuoso\, Joseph Joachim with whom Clara had a wildly successful musical partnership. \nRobert Schumann’s self-styled characters of Florestan and Eusebius are brought to the fore in his Adagio and Allegro for cello and piano – swinging from introversion and tenderness one moment to passionate extroversion the next and finishing with the F major\, a work of idyllic generosity and collegiality.

SUMMARY:Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra: Northern Serenades
DESCRIPTION:Program \nEdward Elgar\nSerenade for Strings in E minor\, Op.20 \nGustav Holst\nSt Paul’s Suite in C Op.29\, No.2 \nRobert Schumann / Shauna Beesley\nFantasiestücke\, Op.73 for solo violin & strings (world premiere) \nHugo Wolf\nItalian Serenade in G (strings version) \nVictor Herbert\nSerenade for Strings in F\, Op.12 \nAbout the concert\nHear beautiful and tuneful works by some of the biggest names of the late 19th century\, including Elgar\, Holst and Wolf. This program also features the world premiere of Schumann’s Fantasiestücke Op.73 arranged for violin and strings by Shauna Beesley. \nIn the late 19th century\, the serenade was the vehicle for exquisite\, expressive writing by some of the biggest names of the era. Elgar and Hugo Wolf both wrote serenades that remain among their best-loved works\, filling these relatively brief pieces with beautiful music that highlights the expressive and emotive way that string musicians were performing at the time. Another composer who knew his way around a tune was American Victor Herbert\, whose serenade shows you why no less a judge than Dvořák thought he had promise beyond the Tin Pan Alley songs he was famous for. \nOriginally composed for solo instrument and piano\, Schumann’s Fantasiestücke in this enlarged arrangement highlights the superb playing of our co-artistic director and violin soloist Rachael Beesley against a lush\, enchanting torrent of strings. Schumann’s title suggests uninhibited imagination\, and that is precisely what you will hear. \nA reserve $95 ($65 Concession)\nB reserve $75 ($55 Concession) \nStudent\nA reserve $30\nB reserve $20

SUMMARY:Mostly Mozart – Augmented Mozart & Fiery Boccherini
DESCRIPTION:Australian National Academy Of Music Ensemble (ANAM)\nTimo-Veikko Valve cello\, director \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart\nString Quartet in D minor\, K.421 – arr. for strings Valve \nLuigi Boccherini\nSymphony in D minor\, Op.12 No.4 (G. 506) ‘La Casa Del Diavolo’ \nAbout the concert\nTimo-Veikko Valve performs with and directs musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) in a program of augmented Mozart and fiery Boccherini as part of our Mostly Mozart series. \nBeginning with Mozart’s String Quartet No.15\, the piece elucidates the chromatic tendencies and hidden beauties that his compositions have endured. Finishing with what is undoubtedly Boccherini’s best-known composition\, Symphony No.4 in D minor is a piece of charm and refinement. A performance of epic proportion\, the sheer scale of musicality will stun and delight. \n‘I’ve always imagined that the drama and passion of Mozart’s string quartet K421 would benefit from a larger format. The music is incredibly operatic – it almost demands more than four characters to play it out. I can’t wait to reveal this new arrangement for a large ensemble in our Mostly Mozart concert in the beautiful Elisabeth Murdoch Hall!’ Timo-Veikko Valve \nAbout the artists\nPrincipal cello of the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) Timo-Veikko Valve is one of the most versatile musicians of his generation\, performing as a soloist\, chamber musician and orchestral leader on both modern and period instruments. The Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) is dedicated to training exceptional young musicians\, creating alumni that work around the world.

From François Devienne’s fateful Paris of 1789\, the ensemble travels through the expressive world of C.P.E. Bach’s Hamburg\, Beethoven’s passionate Vienna and fashionable London with music by Ferdinand Ries. Serenading us with Beethoven’s infinitely charming Notturno and the dramatic elegance of Bach’s Quartet\, the ensemble immerses us in the musical delights that came out of this exceptional chapter of history.
