Our Principal Viola\, Stefanie Farrands\, makes her ACO concerto debut\, joining Richard Tognetti for this exquisite\, unforgettable masterpiece. \nBritten idolised Mozart from boyhood. He visited Salzburg to retrace his footsteps and it’s where Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge premiered. Britten wrote with ease to capture Bridge’s integrity\, wit\, energy and gaiety. \nBritten\, like Mozart\, was gifted beyond his years and had an instinct for timeless musical expression. This extraordinary elixir of youth and wisdom can be heard in his Elegy\, written by the composer when he was just 16 (coincidentally the same age at which Mozart wrote his Divertimento in D major). DESCRIPTION:Program\nBenjamin Britten\nThree Divertimenti \nDavid Paterson\nString Quartet No.1 (Melbourne premiere)* \nLudwig van Beethoven\nString Quartet in C\, Op.59 No.3\, ‘Razumovsky’ \n*commissioned by the Australian String Quartet with the generous support of Michael Rowe and Bernard Ryan in celebration of the birthday of Patricia Davidson \nAbout the concert\nBritten’s Three Divertimenti for String Quartet opens this concert with a flourish of colour. At times reflective and at times brooding\, this sharp\, brilliant set of three short character pieces showcases a breadth of musical tone and texture from the Quartet. \nFollowing the Britten will be the world premiere of a new work commissioned by the ASQ from Australian composer David Paterson. This is Paterson’s third commission for the ensemble\, having also produced two other works\, Quartettsätze and Scherzo\, in 2016 and 2020 respectively. \nFinishing this program is Beethoven’s third and final Razumovsky quartet\, fondly nicknamed the Eroica (Heroic). Considered by many as one of Beethoven’s most radiant compositions\, its bustling and triumphant final movement is what has earned it its nickname. Accademia Arcadia explores Baroque and early-classical chamber music\, traversing trio-sonata\, cantata\, early opera and grand liturgical genres. \nAbout the concert\nIn 1741 Rameau published five chamber works for harpsichord\, violin and viola da gamba. To each work he gave the title ‘concert’\, the French equivalent of the Italian ‘concerto’. This performance will see the trio celebrate the musical entanglement of the Schumanns with Johannes Brahms in a specially curated concert of duos and piano trios. \nAbout the concert\nOpening with the spirited Scherzo from the F-A-E Sonata\, based on a musical cryptogram of the motto ‘Frei aber einsam’ or ‘Free but lonely’\, the movement reveals a young composer already at the height of his craft. Moving into Clara Schumann’s Three Romances\, composed for the violin virtuoso\, Joseph Joachim with whom Clara had a wildly successful musical partnership. \nRobert Schumann’s self-styled characters of Florestan and Eusebius are brought to the fore in his Adagio and Allegro for cello and piano – swinging from introversion and tenderness one moment to passionate extroversion the next and finishing with the F major\, a work of idyllic generosity and collegiality.

This program also features the world premiere of Schumann’s Fantasiestücke Op.73 arranged for violin and strings by Shauna Beesley. \nIn the late 19th century\, the serenade was the vehicle for exquisite\, expressive writing by some of the biggest names of the era. Elgar and Hugo Wolf both wrote serenades that remain among their best-loved works\, filling these relatively brief pieces with beautiful music that highlights the expressive and emotive way that string musicians were performing at the time. Another composer who knew his way around a tune was American Victor Herbert\, whose serenade shows you why no less a judge than Dvořák thought he had promise beyond the Tin Pan Alley songs he was famous for. \nOriginally composed for solo instrument and piano\, Schumann’s Fantasiestücke in this enlarged arrangement highlights the superb playing of our co-artistic director and violin soloist Rachael Beesley against a lush\, enchanting torrent of strings.
