DESCRIPTION:Melbourne Recital Centre’s 2022 Bach Competition\, dedicated to young musicians passionate about JS Bach will soon be open for entries.\nEntrants will compete for the Richard Mills Prize of $4000\, plus additional encouragement prizes. \nThis competition is open to any instrument/s soloists\, duos or small ensembles (five or less) 17 years of age and under (at 1 January 2022). A minimum performance level of AMEB Grade 5 or equivalent is expected. The competition repertoire will consist of any works of JS Bach not exceeding 10 minutes in total duration. The Competition Final will be held at Melbourne Recital Centre on Sunday 5 June 2022. A celebration of the discovery of artistry\, exploring three extraordinary artists – Margaret Sutherland\, Camille Claudel and Clara Schumann. \nKaty Abbott has used Sutherland’s own words to create a song cycle\, allowing the quartet delve into her many obstacles and triumphs. DESCRIPTION:The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus returns to the stage with Rossini’s essential masterpiece.\nAbout the concert\nThe Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus returns to the stage with Rossini’s essential masterpiece\, Petite messe solennelle. Warren Trevelyan-Jones directs four stunning soloists\, accompanied by Melbourne-based Jacob Abela on piano and harmonium. \nThe Petite messe solennelle (1863) is arguably one of the most remarkable of all the nineteenth-century choral masterworks. The style that Rossini uses in his twilight years (this being one of the last works he wrote before his death in 1868) is comparable to the choral music of Haydn\, Fauré and Poulenc. \nThe beautiful melodies in this work are intertwined with the comedic sense of irony that gave Rossini so much of his success with the opera buffa genre. This piece is neither small\, nor solemn! \nRossini structured his mass in the tradition of the missa solemnis but added the petite label as a little joke. He wrote on the final page of the manuscript: ‘Dear Lord\, here it is finished\, this poor little mass. Have I just written sacred music\, or rather\, sacrilegious music? I was born for opera buffa\, as you know well. DESCRIPTION:Program\nBenjamin Britten\nThree Divertimenti \nDavid Paterson\nString Quartet No.1 (Melbourne premiere)* \nLudwig van Beethoven\nString Quartet in C\, Op.59 No.3\, ‘Razumovsky’ \n*commissioned by the Australian String Quartet with the generous support of Michael Rowe and Bernard Ryan in celebration of the birthday of Patricia Davidson \nAbout the concert\nBritten’s Three Divertimenti for String Quartet opens this concert with a flourish of colour. At times reflective and at times brooding\, this sharp\, brilliant set of three short character pieces showcases a breadth of musical tone and texture from the Quartet. \nFollowing the Britten will be the world premiere of a new work commissioned by the ASQ from Australian composer David Paterson. This is Paterson’s third commission for the ensemble\, having also produced two other works\, Quartettsätze and Scherzo\, in 2016 and 2020 respectively. \nFinishing this program is Beethoven’s third and final Razumovsky quartet\, fondly nicknamed the Eroica (Heroic). Considered by many as one of Beethoven’s most radiant compositions\, its bustling and triumphant final movement is what has earned it its nickname. This performance will see the trio celebrate the musical entanglement of the Schumanns with Johannes Brahms in a specially curated concert of duos and piano trios. \nAbout the concert\nOpening with the spirited Scherzo from the F-A-E Sonata\, based on a musical cryptogram of the motto ‘Frei aber einsam’ or ‘Free but lonely’\, the movement reveals a young composer already at the height of his craft. This program also features the world premiere of Schumann’s Fantasiestücke Op.73 arranged for violin and strings by Shauna Beesley. \nIn the late 19th century\, the serenade was the vehicle for exquisite\, expressive writing by some of the biggest names of the era. Elgar and Hugo Wolf both wrote serenades that remain among their best-loved works\, filling these relatively brief pieces with beautiful music that highlights the expressive and emotive way that string musicians were performing at the time. Another composer who knew his way around a tune was American Victor Herbert\, whose serenade shows you why no less a judge than Dvořák thought he had promise beyond the Tin Pan Alley songs he was famous for. \nOriginally composed for solo instrument and piano\, Schumann’s Fantasiestücke in this enlarged arrangement highlights the superb playing of our co-artistic director and violin soloist Rachael Beesley against a lush\, enchanting torrent of strings. Ravel represents one whose own path fused modern elements with the baroque\, classicism and jazz. DESCRIPTION:Australian National Academy Of Music Ensemble (ANAM)\nTimo-Veikko Valve cello\, director \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart\nString Quartet in D minor\, K.421 – arr. for strings Valve \nLuigi Boccherini\nSymphony in D minor\, Op.12 No.4 (G. 506) ‘La Casa Del Diavolo’ \nAbout the concert\nTimo-Veikko Valve performs with and directs musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) in a program of augmented Mozart and fiery Boccherini as part of our Mostly Mozart series. \nBeginning with Mozart’s String Quartet No.15\, the piece elucidates the chromatic tendencies and hidden beauties that his compositions have endured. Finishing with what is undoubtedly Boccherini’s best-known composition\, Symphony No.4 in D minor is a piece of charm and refinement. A performance of epic proportion\, the sheer scale of musicality will stun and delight. \n‘I’ve always imagined that the drama and passion of Mozart’s string quartet K421 would benefit from a larger format. The music is incredibly operatic – it almost demands more than four characters to play it out. I can’t wait to reveal this new arrangement for a large ensemble in our Mostly Mozart concert in the beautiful Elisabeth Murdoch Hall!’ Timo-Veikko Valve \nAbout the artists\nPrincipal cello of the Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) Timo-Veikko Valve is one of the most versatile musicians of his generation\, performing as a soloist\, chamber musician and orchestral leader on both modern and period instruments.
