Beginning with a piece from Melbournian Don Banks written for the 1962 Edinburgh Festival\, the jazz-influenced\, loosely serialist horn-trio captures light moods. \nRoger Smalley’s Horn Trio is a little-known gem of the literature. Warren Trevelyan-Jones directs four stunning soloists\, accompanied by Melbourne-based Jacob Abela on piano and harmonium. \nThe Petite messe solennelle (1863) is arguably one of the most remarkable of all the nineteenth-century choral masterworks. The style that Rossini uses in his twilight years (this being one of the last works he wrote before his death in 1868) is comparable to the choral music of Haydn\, Fauré and Poulenc. \nThe beautiful melodies in this work are intertwined with the comedic sense of irony that gave Rossini so much of his success with the opera buffa genre. This piece is neither small\, nor solemn! \nRossini structured his mass in the tradition of the missa solemnis but added the petite label as a little joke. He wrote on the final page of the manuscript: ‘Dear Lord\, here it is finished\, this poor little mass. Have I just written sacred music\, or rather\, sacrilegious music? I was born for opera buffa\, as you know well. At times reflective and at times brooding\, this sharp\, brilliant set of three short character pieces showcases a breadth of musical tone and texture from the Quartet. \nFollowing the Britten will be the world premiere of a new work commissioned by the ASQ from Australian composer David Paterson. This is Paterson’s third commission for the ensemble\, having also produced two other works\, Quartettsätze and Scherzo\, in 2016 and 2020 respectively. \nFinishing this program is Beethoven’s third and final Razumovsky quartet\, fondly nicknamed the Eroica (Heroic). Considered by many as one of Beethoven’s most radiant compositions\, its bustling and triumphant final movement is what has earned it its nickname. DESCRIPTION:Rameau to captivate and transcend.\nProgram\nJean-Philippe Rameau\nPièces de clavecin en concerts \nAbout the artists\nBaroque ensemble Accademia Arcadia directed by Jacqueline Ogeil (harpsichord) with Laura Vaughan (viola da gamba) and Elizabeth Welsh (violin)\, perform Rameau’s virtuoso keyboard concertos. Accademia Arcadia explores Baroque and early-classical chamber music\, traversing trio-sonata\, cantata\, early opera and grand liturgical genres. \nAbout the concert\nIn 1741 Rameau published five chamber works for harpsichord\, violin and viola da gamba. To each work he gave the title ‘concert’\, the French equivalent of the Italian ‘concerto’.
