SUMMARY:The Parlour – Women's Voices
DESCRIPTION:A uniquely moving experience in celebration of women.\nAbout the artists\nThe Parlour focuses on the sung storytelling of Art Song and ballad\, often spinning a cabaret-like narrative to bring the program together as a collection. Since their inception\, unearthing the intentions behind Art Song compositions and exposing the people and events that inspired them has been part of the journey. \nJane Magão soprano\nAlexandra Mathew mezzo soprano\nKaren Van Spall mezzo soprano\nGeorgina Lewis piano\nCoady Green piano \nProgram\nMargaret Sutherland Six Songs: Settings of Poems by Judith Wright \nLinda Kouvaras Winter Came Early \nAbout the concert\nInterested in investigating the people hidden in footnotes of music history\, The Parlour seeks to tell the stories of those who are too often ignored and forgotten. Women were both creators and enablers of art\, and their stories forge a window into the intimate machinations of creative life whether that be first-hand or through observation. \nTheir performance in Primrose Potter Salon will address the stark gender imbalance in art by celebrating the compositions of Australian women and telling many forgotten stories of women in what will be a uniquely moving experience. \n\nTuesday 12 July 2022 6pm; Primrose Potter Salon Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\nTICKETS Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:Quercus Trio: Hall of Mirrors
DESCRIPTION:Australian composers who cross continents.\nAbout the artists\nQuercus is a new Melbourne-based horn trio\, showcasing the distinctive combination of horn\, violin and piano. Interested in championing contemporary and Australian works\, their diverse and dynamic experience melds to create something truly special. \nAbout the concert\nTheir performance in Primrose Potter Salon shifts focus to Australian composers who cross continents\, with strong roots both here and abroad. Beginning with a piece from Melbournian Don Banks written for the 1962 Edinburgh Festival\, the jazz-influenced\, loosely serialist horn-trio captures light moods. \nRoger Smalley’s Horn Trio is a little-known gem of the literature. A masterful rendering of the myriad colours and emotional possibilities wrought from these instrumental forces. \nLarry Sitsky’s Horn Trio Barerq takes material from the slow movement of his second violin concerto – influenced by the Greek-Amernian philosopher Gurdjieff and part of Sitsky’s ‘Armenian phase’ – and reworks it for horn trio to mesmerising effect. \nProgram \nDon Banks Trio for horn\, violin and piano \nLarry Sitsky Barerq \nRoger Smalley Trio for horn\, violin and piano \n\nWednesday 22 June 2022 6pm\, Melbourne Recital Centre\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\nStandard $25 ($20 Concession)

SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra: Bach
DESCRIPTION:JS Bach’s Double Violin Concerto is the glowing centrepiece of a Bach family reunion that celebrates this greatest of all musical dynasties.\nIt is justly one of Bach’s most beloved works. It has a Largo of heart-stopping beauty in which the two soloists weave around one another rapturously. The chance to hear Richard Tognetti and Principal Violin Helena Rathbone perform this timeless masterpiece is a gift beyond price. SUMMARY:Jayson Gillham – Bach & Chopin
DESCRIPTION:One of the finest players of his generation.\nCelebrated London-based Australian pianist\, Jayson Gillham is known for his bright toned clarity and appealing warmth. Recognised as one of the finest players of his generation\, Gillham takes to the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall stage to perform works by Bach and Chopin. \nThe selected repertoire was inspired by his read-through of Bach partitas and Chopin waltzes in early 2020. Gillham found himself drawn to the lilt of the dance\, calling to mind the gathering of people in good spirit; it is this image that prompted the young virtuoso to return to Australian stages with his two faithful musical companions. Gillham’s relentless elegance and Romantic spirit will hold him in good stead for this unmissable performance. \nProgram \nJohann Sebastian Bach – arr. SUMMARY:Ferruccio Furlanetto in Concert
DESCRIPTION:With a voice that speaks volumes in every note\, Ferruccio Furlanetto is one of the greatest basses of our time.\nOver five decades\, Ferruccio Furlanetto has become one of the world’s most sought after singers. Renowned for his vast range\, thundering vocal power and masterful acting\, he has performed on opera’s finest stages from Milan\, Paris and Vienna to London and New York\, collaborating with leading orchestras and conductors including Herbert von Karajan\, Sir Georg Solti and the legendary Leonard Bernstein. \nThroughout his acclaimed international career\, Furlanetto has made Verdi’s heroes his own\, dominating the titular Attila and Filippo in Don Carlo. At Melbourne’s Arts Centre\, he was unforgettable as the quixotic Don Quichotte and\, at St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre\, he was the first Italian bass to appear in the title role of Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov and as Prince Gremin in Eugene Onegin. Here\, the focus on vocal ability is singular. For Furlanetto\, recitals provide ‘the possibility to paint with the colours of our voice and our intentions… creating images and feelings that will stay in the heart and not in the eyes’. \nAccompanied by pianist Natalia Sidorenko\, Furlanetto traverses the emotional landscape of Brahms\, Mussorgsky and Rachmaninov before filling Melbourne Recital Centre with beloved bass arias from The Marriage of Figaro\, Don Giovanni\, Boris Godunov and Don Carlo. \n\nWednesday 1 June 2022 7.30pm – MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\nPremium $149 ($134 Concession)\nA Reserve $119 ($107 Concession)\nB Reserve $79 ($71 Concession)\nC Reserve $59 ($53 Concession)

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Rossini's Petite messe solennelle
DESCRIPTION:The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus returns to the stage with Rossini’s essential masterpiece.\nAbout the concert\nThe Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus returns to the stage with Rossini’s essential masterpiece\, Petite messe solennelle. Warren Trevelyan-Jones directs four stunning soloists\, accompanied by Melbourne-based Jacob Abela on piano and harmonium. \nThe Petite messe solennelle (1863) is arguably one of the most remarkable of all the nineteenth-century choral masterworks. The style that Rossini uses in his twilight years (this being one of the last works he wrote before his death in 1868) is comparable to the choral music of Haydn\, Fauré and Poulenc. \nThe beautiful melodies in this work are intertwined with the comedic sense of irony that gave Rossini so much of his success with the opera buffa genre. This piece is neither small\, nor solemn! \nRossini structured his mass in the tradition of the missa solemnis but added the petite label as a little joke. He wrote on the final page of the manuscript: ‘Dear Lord\, here it is finished\, this poor little mass. Have I just written sacred music\, or rather\, sacrilegious music? I was born for opera buffa\, as you know well. Not much technique\, a little bit of heart\, that’s all.’ \n\nSaturday 28 May 2022 7.30pm \nDuration: 1 hour 30 mins (no interval) \n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\nStandard $49 ($44 Concession)\nGroup 10+ $41

SUMMARY:Seraphim Trio and Chris Moore
DESCRIPTION:Sonic cohesion and uniform musical mastery.\nProgram\nBrett Dean Imaginary Ballet \nDora Pejačević Piano Quartet\, Op.25 \nAbout the artists\nHelen Ayres violin\nAnna Goldsworthy piano\nTimothy Nankervis cello\nChristopher Moore viola \nSeraphim Trio is as much a lifelong friendship as a chamber ensemble. Acclaimed for its encyclopedic projects and inventive collaborations\, their sonic cohesion and uniform musical mastery is a constant in all its performances. \nAbout the concert\nTheir performance in Primrose Potter Salon will seem them collaborate with violist Christopher Moore to present Imaginary Ballet\, the breathtaking new composition by Brett Dean. \nInspired by Brett’s lockdown listening\, Imaginary Ballet is a suite of fast\, dance-like movements which carry rhythmic drive and bullish\, effervescent energy. A series of slower interludes endows the work with oases of silhouettes and shadows\, at the centre of which is an elegy to Brett’s dear friend and former viola teacher\, John Curro. \nPaired with a rarely heard piano quartet by one of Croatia’s most important 20th century composers\, Dora Pejačević. Written in late Romantic style\, the quartet is a blend of warm\, lyrical melody and spirited dance. Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G minor remains a cornerstone of the repertoire and is the first major piece composed for the genre. \n\nThursday 26 May 2022 6pm\, Primrose Potter Salon \nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\nTICKETS Standard $50 ($40 Concession)

SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra: Mozart Sinfonia Concertante
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin Britten and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart reach out to one another across the centuries in profound and deeply moving communion.\nMozart’s wondrous Sinfonia Concertante intertwines violin and viola soloists in a partnership of equals. They speak to one another of beauty\, loss\, consolation and\, finally\, exaltation. Our Principal Viola\, Stefanie Farrands\, makes her ACO concerto debut\, joining Richard Tognetti for this exquisite\, unforgettable masterpiece. \nBritten idolised Mozart from boyhood. He visited Salzburg to retrace his footsteps and it’s where Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge premiered. Britten wrote with ease to capture Bridge’s integrity\, wit\, energy and gaiety. \nBritten\, like Mozart\, was gifted beyond his years and had an instinct for timeless musical expression. This extraordinary elixir of youth and wisdom can be heard in his Elegy\, written by the composer when he was just 16 (coincidentally the same age at which Mozart wrote his Divertimento in D major). We give Britten’s work its long-awaited Australian premiere. \nProgram \nBenjamin Britten Elegy for Strings – Australian Premiere \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat – arr. strings \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart Divertimento in D \nBenjamin Britten Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge \n\nMonday 16 & Saturday 21 May 2022\, 7.30pm \n\nElisabeth Murdoch Hall\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\nPremium $131 ($112 Concession)\nA Reserve $118 ($100 Concession)\nB Reserve $97 ($82 Concession)\nC Reserve $71 ($60 Concession)\nD Reserve $49 ($49 Concession) \nGroup 10+\nPremium $114\nA Reserve $106\nB Reserve $90\nC Reserve $63\nD Reserve $37 \nUnder 30\n$39 \nStudent\n$25 \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:ASQ in Concert: Britten Paterson Beethoven
DESCRIPTION:Program\nBenjamin Britten\nThree Divertimenti \nDavid Paterson\nString Quartet No.1 (Melbourne premiere)* \nLudwig van Beethoven\nString Quartet in C\, Op.59 No.3\, ‘Razumovsky’ \n*commissioned by the Australian String Quartet with the generous support of Michael Rowe and Bernard Ryan in celebration of the birthday of Patricia Davidson \nAbout the concert\nBritten’s Three Divertimenti for String Quartet opens this concert with a flourish of colour. At times reflective and at times brooding\, this sharp\, brilliant set of three short character pieces showcases a breadth of musical tone and texture from the Quartet. \nFollowing the Britten will be the world premiere of a new work commissioned by the ASQ from Australian composer David Paterson. This is Paterson’s third commission for the ensemble\, having also produced two other works\, Quartettsätze and Scherzo\, in 2016 and 2020 respectively. \nFinishing this program is Beethoven’s third and final Razumovsky quartet\, fondly nicknamed the Eroica (Heroic). Considered by many as one of Beethoven’s most radiant compositions\, its bustling and triumphant final movement is what has earned it its nickname. As this concert began\, so too shall it finish with a display of technical mastery from the ASQ in this playfully interweaving and uplifting finale. \n\nTuesday 26 April 2022 7pm \n\nElisabeth Murdoch Hall\n\nDuration: 1 hour 10 mins (no interval) \n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\nStandard $70 ($60 Concession)

SUMMARY:Accademia Arcadia – Rameau Concertos
DESCRIPTION:Rameau to captivate and transcend.\nProgram\nJean-Philippe Rameau\nPièces de clavecin en concerts \nAbout the artists\nBaroque ensemble Accademia Arcadia directed by Jacqueline Ogeil (harpsichord) with Laura Vaughan (viola da gamba) and Elizabeth Welsh (violin)\, perform Rameau’s virtuoso keyboard concertos. Accademia Arcadia explores Baroque and early-classical chamber music\, traversing trio-sonata\, cantata\, early opera and grand liturgical genres. \nAbout the concert\nIn 1741 Rameau published five chamber works for harpsichord\, violin and viola da gamba. To each work he gave the title ‘concert’\, the French equivalent of the Italian ‘concerto’. Enchanting the ear with endless variety and novelty\, the works are harpsichord concertos whose orchestral component has been reduced to an absolute minimum of one treble instrument and one bass instrument. \nA celebration of people\, characters\, places and popular dance\, their performance featuring a mid-18th-century French harpsichord made by William Dowd of Boston in 1976 will captivate and transcend. \n\nThursday 21 April 2022 6pm \n\nPrimrose Potter Salon\n\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\nStandard $37 ($30 Concession)
