SUMMARY:Rubiks Collective - Towards Home
DESCRIPTION:“incredibly personal\, strangely spiritual and ultimately deeply touching” – Limelight \nRubiks Collective presents two world premieres from rising art music composers Alice Chance and Maria Kaoutzani\, in this performance exploring the intricacies between love\, intergenerational relationships and complex modern-day perceptions of ‘home’. \nChance’s new work Heirloom is an electroacoustic ‘mother-daughter motet’\, featuring the voices of fifteen women from five different families. Drawing from the Blue Mountains\, the Torres Strait\, the Philippines\, France and Iran\, the women sing and share stories of the treasured keepsakes\, traditions and memories handed down from grandmother to mother to daughter: a jewellery box\, a collection of songs\, a prayer. \nDrawing musical inspiration from Monteverdi’s Vespers and Gavin Bryars’ Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet\, the voices slowly phase in and out of synchronisation with each other\, reflecting the complex and constantly evolving ties between mothers and daughters throughout their lifetimes. \nHeirloom is paired with Five Love Songs by Maria Kaoutzani (Greece/USA)\, one of the founding members of the all-female New York composer collective Kinds of Kings. While its title suggests simplicity of format and concept\, this new work interrogates Kaoutzani’s personal experiences of love and belonging regarding intimate relationships and nationalistic identity. \nDate 25 August 2023\nTime 7.00pm\nDuration 60 minutes\nAddress Melbourne Recital Centre\, 31 Sturt Street Southbank 3006\nTickets $30 – $37\nBookings melbournerecital.com.au or (03) 9699 3333

SUMMARY:Rubiks Collective: Sculptress
DESCRIPTION:Sculptress is a celebration of artists who are reshaping contemporary music by re-examining our past. New approaches to sound\, notation and genre play against tributes to early electronic music pioneers\, field recordings and the 1950’s golden age of American advertising. \nFeaturing the sonic investigations of ‘musical scientist’ Nicole Lizée\, the enigmatic atmospheres of Anna Thorvalsdottir and a new composition by Christine McCombe\, the winner of the 2018 Pythia Prize\, Rubiks presents five premieres paying homage to some of the most innovative creators of the 21st-century and those who have paved the way. \nSculptress will also include the announcement of the 2019 Pythia Prize winner. Launched in 2017\, the Pythia Prize is Rubiks’ annual commission project addressing gender equality and diversity in contemporary art music. The 2019 prize will support an Australian female or gender nonconforming composer to collaborate with Rubiks to create a new work for the ensemble’s 2020 season. \nProgram: \nAnna Thorvaldsdottir – Fields (2016)**\nSara Glojnaric – Indispensable Ms. Jones (2016)**\nGemma Peacocke – Quiver (2018)**\nChristine McCombe (2018 Pythia Prize) – Waiting (2019)*\nNicole Lizée – Sculptress (2010)** \n* World premiere  ** Australian premiere \nRubiks Collective \nRubiks is one of Melbourne’s most dynamic contemporary art music ensembles\, bringing together Australia’s most exciting and versatile young performers. Since debuting in 2015\, the ensemble has been hailed as “a formidable contribution to Australia’s growing community of contemporary music makers” (Partial Durations) and commended for “incredibly personal\, strangely spiritual and ultimately deeply touching” performances (Limelight Magazine). With a particular interest in storytelling and cross-art collaboration\, Rubiks has quickly established a reputation for excellence\, delighting audiences with their unique programming and dazzling virtuosity.
