SUMMARY:Flinders Quartet – From Silence & Snow
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven\, Mustonen\, Sibelius and Harrison in a dynamic dialogue across eras.\nThis program is as eclectic as it is rewarding. For Flinders Quartet violinist Wilma Smith\, Beethoven’s Op.18 No.4 marks a personal premiere after a lifetime of quartet playing\, its fiery spirit adding a special milestone to the season opener. \nFinland’s premier composer\, Olli Mustonen’s String Quartet No.2 receives its first southern hemisphere performance\, while Sibelius’ beloved Voces Intimae continues the Finnish X-factor of intimacy and atmosphere. \nCompleting the program is Holly Harrison’s Swoop\, a dazzlingly virtuosic and rhythmically inventive piece that has delighted audiences worldwide. As Wilma reflects\, ‘Beethoven\, Mustonen\, Harrison and Sibelius – they may seem like chalk and cheese but I think this program’s a real winner.’ \nFlinders Quartet: Elizabeth Sellars violin; Wilma Smith violin; Helen Ireland viola; Zoe Knighton cello \nLudwig van Beethoven  String Quartet No.4 in C minor\, Op.18 No.4 \nOlli Mustonen String Quartet No.2 * \nJean Sibelius String Quartet in D minor\, Op.56 Voces Intimae \nHolly Harrison Swoop \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday 31 March 2026 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). Biber Sonata Jucunda \nDonald Nicolson Spirals (2022) – world premiere performances* \nAbout the concert\nTasmanian Baroque ensemble Van Diemen’s Band invites you to explore the historic borderlands of Europe on their national tour with Musica Viva Australia. For centuries\, generations of musicians wrote dances and masses\, symphonies and quartets\, as their homelands changed ownership under their feet. SUMMARY:Selby & Friends – Back from the Brink
DESCRIPTION:About the concert\nSelby & Friends return to the stage\, back from the brink\, after what seems like a long hiatus with a fascinating program celebrating composers who fought against the establishment and\, in doing so\, forged a courageous way forward for those that followed. \nFormed in large part from a missed concert in 2021\, this concert introduces the great American composer\, Amy Beach\, who wrote a strong rebuttal to comments made by Dvořák about women in music and who became a national symbol of women’s creative power. Dvořák’s first piano trio is an intimate view into the great composer’s favoured genre\, and Ravel represents one whose own path fused modern elements with the baroque\, classicism and jazz. \nThe brilliant and versatile cellist Clancy Newman is welcomed back from the US to join Australian icon Dene Olding and Artistic Director & pianist\, Kathryn Selby\, performing a Selby & Friends concert together for the first time since May last year. \nProgram \nAmy Beach\nPiano Trio Op.150 \nAntonin Dvořák\nPiano Trio no. 1 in B flat\, Op.21 \nMaurice Ravel\nPiano Trio in A minor \nArtists \nDene Olding violin\nClancy Newman cello\nKathryn Selby piano \nBooking Information\n\n\nThursday 17 March 2022 7.30pm \n\nPrimrose Potter Salon\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\nStandard $75 ($57 Concession) \nBuy Subscription Package\nStandard $309 ($235 Concession)

DESCRIPTION:Program\nHolly Harrison\nBalderdash \nFranz Schubert\nString Quintet in C \nMusica Viva Australia’s current FutureMakers\, the brilliant Partridge Quartet\, are sure to wow audiences with this knockout of a program.\nJoined by guest violinist Jos Jonker and cellist Daniel Smith\, the players’ preternatural rapport\, formidable musicianship\, and gusto for performance will make this an unforgettable experience. \nAbout the concert\nThe concert opens with Holly Harrison’s Balderdash\, commissioned for the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition and receiving another well-deserved hearing here. A highly theatrical piece\, Balderdash explores musical ideas inspired by the electric guitar\, including distortion\, white noise\, and power-chords. Making use of punk-rock rhythms\, dissonance\, and percussive-based jams\, it encourages the traditional string quartet to behave like something of a rock band\, interrupting\, challenging\, and engaging in one-upmanship with each other. Influences as disparate as bluegrass\, grunge\, prog-rock\, metal\, and disco coalesce into something utterly unique. \nSchubert’s String Quintet in C Major couldn’t be more different. The composer’s final chamber work\, it is simply sublime and symphonic in scope\, helping to redefine at time of writing what a small string ensemble could accomplish. Impassioned and serene in equal measure\, the work constantly shifts in tone\, mood\, and colour\, but never loses its sense of quiet beauty. \n\nTuesday 1 March 2022 7pm & Saturday 5 March 7pm 2022 \n\nElisabeth Murdoch Hall\n\nDuration: 1 hours 15 mins (no interval) \n\n\nTICKETS\n\n\nPremium $153 ($133 Concession)\nA Reserve $122 ($107 Concession)\nB Reserve $92 ($80 Concession)\nC Reserve $64 ($56 Concession)\nUnder 40 $40

SUMMARY:MRC Chamber Music Series: Christopher Watson & Calvin Bowman
DESCRIPTION:Program\nGerald Finzi\nA Young Man’s Exhortation\, Op.14 \nCalvin Bowman\nSelected art songs \nChristopher Watson and Calvin Bowman unite in A Young Man’s Exhortation\nEnglish tenor Christopher Watson is a third-generation singer\, former member of the internationally renowned vocal ensembles the Tallis Scholars and Theatre of Voices\, and an acclaimed recitalist. Christopher returns to his love of art song in a concert with one of Australia’s finest art song composers and pianists\, Calvin Bowman. \nAbout this concert\nArt song is created through a thoughtful marriage of poetry and music. It appeals to lovers of chamber music\, literature and those who can appreciate the lyrical impulse which has inspired composers like Gerald Finzi and Calvin Bowman to make art song a central focus of their output. This radiant song recital presents two rare opportunities – to hear celebrated Australian vocal music composer Bowman perform his own music\, and to hear an English tenor singing some of the finest English art song of the 20th century. Profound themes of nature and loss are traversed through Finzi’s complete cycle to poetry by Thomas Hardy\, and a varied selection of much-admired songs by Bowman.

SUMMARY:Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School: Terms and Conditions
DESCRIPTION:Young soloists and ensembles from the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School present a program exploring interactions between young people and technology featuring the world premiere of Stefan Cassomenos’ Terms and Conditions.\nCassomenos compiles text from consumed sources such as memes and Instagram posts to shine a spotlight on the inherent contradictions facing the youth of today\, while Bates implants electronica and improvisation into an orchestral score. \nThe program also features Schnittke’s modern take on two master composers with Moz-Art à la Haydn for String Orchestra and Dvorak’s radiant and majestic Bohemian flavoured 8th Symphony\, conducted by the revered Fabian Russell.
