SUMMARY:Concert Grand
DESCRIPTION:Two ecstatic Classical masterpieces by two of the greatest composers—quite simply a concert to leave you uplifted and elated. \nBeethoven burst onto Vienna’s orchestral scene in 1800 with his resplendent first symphony. Dramatic\, witty\, majestic\, and joyous by turns\, this is Beethoven at his high-energy\, optimistic best. \nMozart’s Piano Concerto No 23 is one of the best-loved of all works for piano and orchestra. To perform it\, we have the remarkable Lucinda Collins\, admired by MCO’s Artistic Director William Hennessy as “an ideal in pianism\, musical thought\, intelligence\, and passionate musical communication.” \nDEBUSSY arr NILSON\nPréludes Book 1: selections\nMOZART\nPiano Concerto No 17 in G major K453\nMENDELSSOHN\nPiano Concerto in A minor MWV O2: II Adagio\nBEETHOVEN\nSymphony No 1 in C major Op 21 \nLucinda Collins PIANO\nWilliam Hennessy DIRECTOR

SUMMARY:Beyond Baroque
DESCRIPTION:From an unrivalled musical pedigree and education\, JS Bach’s sons blazed a revolutionary path. With Telemann and others\, they were the avant-garde forging a new style. Combining awe-inspiring virtuosity\, deep feeling\, and brilliant colours\, this is the music that inspired the Classical era. Rarely heard today\, these are some of the most exciting and inventive compositions for chamber orchestra and we can’t wait to share them with you. \nChristopher Moore is one of Australia’s most recognised chamber musicians\, a viola superstar whose verve and mastery of the instrument has seen him perform for audiences all over the world. He performs the great Telemann viola concerto\, often thought to be the first solo concerto for the instrument\, and a meticulous reconstruction of a lost viola concerto from JS Bach’s own transcriptions. \nCPE BACH\nSinfonia in E minor Wq177 Fandango\nTELEMANN\nViola Concerto in G major TWV51:G9\nOuverture Les Nations TWV55:B5\nWF BACH\nSymphony in F major F67\nJS BACH\nConcerto for Viola in E flat major BWV1053R (reconstructed by Wilfried Fischer) \nChristopher Moore VIOLA\nWilliam Hennessy DIRECTOR

SUMMARY:RESONANCES: Music from Japan
DESCRIPTION:Pianists Tomoe Kawabata and Aura Go share an electric musical connection that speaks directly to audiences. Described as ‘positively ecstatic’\, ‘masterful’ and ‘profoundly moving’\, the pair delights in sharing the unique combination of intimacy and dynamism of the piano duo. Their innovative and thoughtful programming explores seldom-performed works and new music alongside much-loved staples of the repertoire. Their 2017 Melbourne Recital Centre series celebrates three favourite aspects of the genre in three distinct and compelling programs: unique resonances\, evocative and colourful sonic landscapes\, and infectious energy. \nResonances: Music from Japan is a rare opportunity to hear spellbinding works for one and two pianos by several of Japan’s foremost composers. This concert reveals the unique resonances created by blending two pianos into one sonic entity\, while also tracing the lineage of Japan’s French school of composition\, fathered by Tomojiro Ikenouchi and pushed into bold new directions by his students Akira Miyoshi\, Akio Yashiro and Shin-ichiro Ikebe. Several of the works on the program were recorded for the first time by the Kawabata-Go Piano Duo on their CD\, Five Rocks in a Japanese Garden\, and receive their first Australian performance in this concert. \nPROGRAM: \nTomojiro Ikenouchi\nEn Bis pour piano à 4 mains \nAkio Yashiro\nSonata for piano \nAkira Miyoshi\nPhénomène sonore I pour deux pianos \nPhénomène sonore II pour deux pianos \nHenri Dutilleux\nFigures de resonances\, for two pianos \nShin-ichiro Ikebe\nA couple of butterflies through…

SUMMARY:Rococo Cello
DESCRIPTION:Gilt-edged\, electrifying beauty; opulence\, pomp\, exuberance and glamour. Welcome to the sparkling pleasure domes of the Rococo. \nThe early Classical period was a golden age of arts patronage\, as nobles and merchants across Europe outdid each other with fabulous private commissions in every artform. In the ornate halls of the Esterházys\, Frederick the Great and the Duke of Bavaria\, the symphonies\, operas and concerti of Mozart\, Haydn and CPE Bach were first brought to life. \nDescribed by Gramophone as “A superbly stylish\, raptly intuitive performer\,” Li-Wei Qin is a globe-trotting cello virtuoso\, in demand worldwide as a concerto and recital artist. He joins MCO to serve us a double treat\, with CPE Bach’s scintillating A-major concerto and one of the great tours de force of the cello repertoire\, the Variations on a Rococo Theme by Tchaikovsky. \nPRAISE FOR LI-WEI QIN: \n“…meltingly beautiful tone\, flawless centered intonation and an ironclad technique”\n— New York Times \nMOZART\nIdomeneo: Overture & Chaconne\nCPE BACH\nCello Concerto in A major Wq172\nHAYDN\nSymphony No 88 Letter V\nTCHAIKOVSKY\nVariations on a Rococo Theme Op 33 \nLi-Wei Qin CELLO\nMichael Dahlenburg CONDUCTOR\nWilliam Hennessy DIRECTOR
