SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble: Time is a River
DESCRIPTION:The lifeblood of memory\, music is the empowering tool through which composers pass on stories and honour the continuous flow of time. Franz Schubert’s stirring Death and the Maiden has long captured the imagination of audiences and mirrors the composer’s own inner turmoil with its thrilling climaxes\, tortured freneticism\, and darkly romantic source materials. \nWith the fragility of life at their centres\, Arvo Pärt’s plaintive Mozart-Adagio and Graham Koehne’s Time is a River\, both dedicated to loved ones passed\, represent hopefulness and reinforce an inspiring message of life’s raw beauty and the innate power of music to heal. This reflective program also includes the world premiere of a moving work by ARIA award-winning composer and proud Yuin woman Brenda Gifford. \nProgram\nArvo PÄRT Mozart-Adagio\nFranz SCHUBERT String Quartet No. 14\, ‘Death and the Maiden’\nBrenda GIFFORD World Premiere*\nGraeme KOEHNE Time is a River

SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble: Night and Now
DESCRIPTION:Concertos\, Quintets and World Premieres \nWhen performing his own piano concertos\, the great showman Frédéric Chopin preferred dark and smoky salons to the grand concert halls of Paris. SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble: Russian Romantics
DESCRIPTION:A spectacular face-off between giants of Russian Romanticism \nProgram\n\nNikolai Rimsky-Korsakov Quintet for Piano and Winds in B-flat major \nAnton Rubinstein Quintet for Piano and Winds in F major \nSergei Rachmaninoff Preludes [Selections] \n\nAbout The Music\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClosing the 2020 Season with Romantic colour and bravura\, acclaimed Australian pianist Clemens Leske leads the Ensemble in a program that puts two Russian masterworks for piano and winds head-to-head. \nA rare example of Rimsky-Korsakov’s departure from orchestral writing\, the attention-grabbing Quintet for Piano and Winds embodies the powerful rhythms and boastful textures of the composer’s larger works jam-packed into an ensemble of just five. Anton Rubinstein’s work of the same name presents itself as a strong challenger\, in which the virtuosic piano writing amply reflects the composer’s recognition in his own lifetime as one of the world’s greatest pianists. \nThese works are accompanied by selections from Rachmaninoff’s dazzling Preludes.

SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble: Chopin\, Kerry and Clara
DESCRIPTION:A Romantic concerto\, a world premiere quintet and a celebration of Clara Schumann \nProgram\n\nFrédéric Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor (arr. for Piano and String Quintet)\nGordon Kerry Clarinet Quintet [World Premiere] *\nClara Schumann Piano Trio in G minor \n*Commissioned by Omega Ensemble and supported by Kim Williams AM \nAbout The Music\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe supreme pianist-composer\, Chopin was in fact not the showman performer his virtuosic music would suggest\, instead preferring local salons to the grand concert halls of Paris. With Chopin at the piano\, the composer’s larger works\, including his two piano concertos\, were performed far more frequently in private with small ensembles than in public with large orchestras. \nChopin’s breathtaking first concerto is presented here in a beautiful arrangement for piano and string quintet that captures all the romance of the original. \nThis fiery work is accompanied by Clara Schumann’s emotional Piano Trio\, considered by many to be her most challenging work\, and the world premiere of a new Clarinet Quintet by award-winning Australian composer Gordon Kerry written for Artistic Director and Clarinetist David Rowden.

SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble: Bartok in Contrast
DESCRIPTION:Hungarian hillsides\, red Russian squares and late nights at the Parisian circus \nProgram\n\nBéla Bartók Contrasts for Clarinet\, Violin and Piano\nFrancis Poulenc Sonata for Clarinet and Piano\nAram Khachaturian Trio for Clarinet\, Violin and Piano\nDmitri Shostakovich Violin Sonata in G major \n\nAbout The Music\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe mid-twentieth century saw a steep rise in popularity for the clarinet due to its impressive range of colour\, emotion and agility\, and a quest by composers for new musical forms and sounds. Composers no longer looked to Classical or Romantic ideals\, but instead sought the directness and clarity of the immediate world in which they lived\, inspired by colourful melodies and rhythms of folk songs\, or the bustling sounds of the cities. \nClarinetist and Artistic Director of Omega Ensemble\, David Rowden\, leads an exhilarating program of works for clarinet\, violin and piano\, covering a full gamut of colour and emotion.

SUMMARY:PLEXUS: Prophecy
DESCRIPTION:PLEXUS continues its celebration of Melbourne artists with a program which includes three world premieres by three esteemed and very diverse composers – Brenton Broadstock\, Christine McCombe and Christian O’Brien.\nPLEXUS continues on its mission to perform works commissioned by the Verdehr Trio\, with the Tibetan Dance by Chinese-American composer Bright Sheng. The composer writes: ‘The first two movements of the work are in reminiscence\, as if one is hearing songs from a distant memory. The work is anchored on the last movement\, when the music gradually becomes real. Here\, the music is based on a Tibetan folk dance motive from Qinghai\, a Chinese province bordered with Tibet.’ PLEXUS joins forces with extraordinary guest artists Deborah Cheetham (soprano)\, Michelle Wood (cello) and Damien Eckersley (double bass)\, in Stefan Cassomenos’ intimate arrangement of the exquisite Four Last Songs by Richard Strauss. \nPLEXUS brings together the talents of three of Melbourne’s most vibrant and versatile musicians\, with a goal of commissioning and celebrating Australian and overseas composers. The name PLEXUS reflects the ensemble’s devotion to engaging an ever-growing network of exceptional artists across a variety of disciplines\, facilitating their contribution to Australia’s rich and diverse cultural landscape. Formed with a mission to follow in the footsteps of the acclaimed ensemble of the same instrumental combination\, the Verdehr Trio\, PLEXUS brings to Australian audiences the most significant and culturally relevant of these works and continues in the Verdehrs’ tradition\, commissioning Australian and international composers on a regular basis. Since launching in 2014\, PLEXUS has commissioned over 100 composers and has given over 70 world premieres. Widely acclaimed for its ongoing commitment to Australian music\, PLEXUS was shortlisted as a finalist for the 2016 Melbourne Music Prize Outstanding Musicians Award. \nPresented by Melbourne Recital Centre and PLEXUS
