SUMMARY:Barry Conyngham: Ice Carving
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special performance of Barry Conyngham’s Ice Carving\, featuring Conservatorium string students and staff member Sophie Rowell. \nComposed in Japan in 1970 while studying with Tōru Takemitsu\, the work takes its inspiration from the ice sculptures of Tokyo’s Imperial Palace gardens\, tracing a sculpture’s life from raw block to finished form\, melting in the heat of the sun. Scored for solo violin and string orchestra\, the piece explores the textural language of ice: crystalline\, prismatic\, jagged\, melting. \nIce Carving is a particularly successful and striking product of the growing interest in Asian music and aesthetics among a new generation of Australian composers in the early 1970s. – Classic Australia\, ABC \nSCHEDULE Three sessions are available: \nSession 1 \n6:00PM Introduction by Barry Conyngham \n6:15PM Performance \nSession 2 \n7:00pm Introduction by Barry Conyngham \n7:15pm Performance \nSession 3 \n8:00PM Introduction by Barry Conyngham\n8:15PM Performance \nCREDITS \nBarry Conyngham\, composer\nRichard Davis\, conductor\nSophie Rowell\, soloist \nConservatorium String Students \n\nFri\, 29 May\, 6pm – 6:30pm AEST\n+2 more dates\n\n\n\n\nKenneth Myer Auditorium\, The Ian Potter Southbank Centre \n\nSouthbank VIC\, Australia\n\n\n\n\n\nHosted by Fine Arts and Music at Melbourne
