SUMMARY:IOpera: Rothschild’s Violin
DESCRIPTION:6 years ago IOpera presented the Australian premiere of a chamber arrangement of Venjamin Fleischmann’s one-act opera\, Rothschild’s Violin (1941)\, completed by Dmitri Shostakovich in (1944)\, based on the short story of the same name by Anton Chekhov. \nOn Sunday 29 September it presents the Australian premiere of the full version for orchestra at Melba Hall\, University of Melbourne. \nThe story centres on one Yakov Matveyevich Ivanov\, nicknamed “Bronze” (sung by Australian baritone Christopher Hillier) who is the coffin maker in a small village\, and also an amateur fiddler in the town’s wedding band\, led by Moses Ilyich (tenor Robert Macfarlane). Obsessed with losses\, both real and imaginary\, and faced with the impending death of his own wife (mezzo-soprano Shakira Dugan)\, he takes out his anger at the world on the band’s Jewish flautist\, Rothschild (tenor Asher Reichman). In a magnificent sequence of soliloquies Yakov eventually realises the error of his ways. Realizing that he cannot take his violin to the grave with him\, he bequeaths it to the unsuspecting Rothschild. At once shocked and deeply moved\, Rothschild plays a lament\, which is elevated in Fleischmann’s score into a sumptuous orchestral apotheosis. \nOver fifty musicians of The Orchestra Project deliver Fleischmann and Shostakovich’s sumptuous score; one that proves\, in every measure\, equal to the lyrically comic-tragic\, and ultimately redemptive message of Chekhov’s extraordinary\, and ever-relevant\, tale. \nWhere:  Melba Hall\, Royal Parade\, University of Melbourne \nWhen:   Sunday 29 September \n3:00 pm Pre-performance talk. \n3:45 pm Performance (45 min) \nTickets: $40/$25 https://www.trybooking.com/CVETA

SUMMARY:Tristan Lee Piano: Haydn\, Schoenberg\, Cage and Prokofiev
DESCRIPTION:In this recital\, pianist Tristan Lee explores three ground-breaking works of the twentieth century\, alongside the Classicism of Haydn. Commencing with Haydn’s largest work for the keyboard\, Piano Sonata Hob. XVI/52\, this recital then surges forward in Schoenberg’s aphoristic set of miniatures\, Six Little Piano Pieces Op. 19. Allowing for a moment of quiet reflection\, Cage’s controversial 4’33’’ is followed by Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 7\, which he composed amidst the horrors of World War II. In this exciting recital\, each work uniquely pushes the boundaries of pianistic and musical expression. \nHaydn Piano Sonata Hob. XVI/52 \nSchoenberg Six Little Piano Pieces Op. 19 \nCage 4’33’’ \nProkofiev Sonata No. 7 Op. 83 \nMon\, 6 May 2024 1:10 PM – 2:00 PM AEST \nMelba Hall\, Gate 12\, Royal Parade Parkville\, VIC 3052 \nFree

SUMMARY:Melba Hall Lunch Hour Concert Series: Trio Anima Mundi
DESCRIPTION:Trio Anima Mundi – Piano Trio Archaeology\nInternational award-winning ensemble Trio Anima Mundi present two dynamic works from their ongoing Piano Trio Archaeology findings. Rebecca Clarke’s Piano Trio (1921) is striking in its evocative harmonies and energetic rhythms. Carl Reissiger’s Op.25 Piano Trio is the first of 28 ‘jewel-like’ works he penned for this genre\, grand and spectacular in its virtuosic Romanticism. \nTrio Anima Mundi\nKenji Fujimura\, piano; Rochelle Ughetti\, violin; Noella Yan\, cello \nInternational award-winning Trio Anima Mundi is one of Australia’s best-known chamber groups. Founded in 2008 initially to give back to society through fundraising performance activities – and hence the name of the group – Trio Anima Mundi has expanded its scope to give back through other means\, such as the preservation of cultural heritage. It has become renowned for its ‘Piano Trio Archaeology’ – the unearthing and performing forgotten works – and presenting these ‘findings’ alongside masterpieces of the piano trio genre and freshly-minted contemporary compositions. \nPraised as a “trio of vitality\, charm and aplomb” (The Age)\, the Trio’s members – Kenji Fujimura (piano)\, Rochelle Ughetti (violin)\, and Noella Yan (cello) – are seasoned performers and have gained a reputation for their sumptuous sonorities\, immaculate ensemble\, and masterly interpretation. \nMonday\, 26 Feb 2024 1:10 PM – 2:00 PM AEDT \nMelba Hall\, University of Melbourne\, Parkville \nTICKETS: Free

SUMMARY:Songmakers Australia: Schwanengesang
DESCRIPTION:Program\nFranz Schubert Schwanengesang D 957 \nSongmakers Australia \nSchubert’s last song cycle was published after his untimely death at the age of 31. It comprises songs by Ludwig Rellstab\, the only 6 Heine settings by Schubert and his very last song\, Die Taubenpost\, a fitting message of love to all of us. \nSchubert’s intentions for the publication of these songs\, including the order for their performance\, is not clear. Hence\, Songmakers conception for a cycle after Schubert’s earlier models – a journey there and back again\, traversing an emotional gamut ranging from love hopeful and/or renewed\, fearful foreboding to bitter disillusionment. \nUnique in the musical landscape of Australia\, Songmakers Australia brings together some of the country’s leading singers and instrumentalists in a diverse repertoire comprising some of the pinnacles of chamber music. \nArtists\nNicholas Dinopoulos\, bass-baritone\nAndrea Katz\, piano \nThis recital is presented as part of the Melba Hall Lunch Hour Concert Series. All concerts in this series can also be streamed live via the MCM website.
