SUMMARY:Camberwell Chorale: Beethoven's Mass in C Major and “The Ruins of Athens”
DESCRIPTION:Prepare to be moved\, delighted and inspired by two of Beethoven’s captivating choral works – “The Ruins of Athens” and his Mass in C Major\, performed by Camberwell Chorale. \nThe concert will open with Beethoven’s “The Ruins of Athens”\, the incidental music to a play written in 1811 for the opening of a new theatre in Pest\, Hungary the following year. From the dramatic overture to the final chorus\, Beethoven captures the spirit of August von Kotzebue’s play. The 4th movement’s colourful and spirited Marcia alla turca quickly became popular. Franz Liszt’s Capriccio alla turca is based on two movements from this work. \nBeethoven’s Mass in C Major\, written three years earlier\, is one of his most significant works in the choral repertoire. The work’s grandeur\, power\, and spiritual depth make it an enduring masterpiece that continues to inspire and move audiences. The peaceful serenity of the opening Kyrie to the joyful\, triumphant Credo\, the drama and intensity of the Agnus Dei bring us closer to understanding why Beethoven wrote\, ‘I think I have treated the text in a manner in which it has rarely been treated’. \nConducted by Douglas Heywood OAM\, featuring the Camerata Orchestra and esteemed soloists Lauren Oldham\, Kerrie Bolton\, Paul Biencourt\, and Jerzy Kozlowski. \nSunday 7 May\, 2:30pm; Hawthorn Arts Centre\nTickets $30 – $60

SUMMARY:Firebird Trio: Dark Vienna
DESCRIPTION:Licks of flame and historic letters illuminate Dark Vienna by Firebird Trio\n  \nHistoric venue Hawthorn Arts Centre will be lit by candles for Firebird Trio’s ‘Dark Vienna’; bringing to light the exhilarating compositions of the 1st and 2nd Viennese Schools.  \nHaydn\, Schubert\, Beethoven\, Johann Strauss II\, Kreisler and Webern will be accompanied by historical letters and texts read by musician and broadcaster Alice Keath (ABC Classic).  \nThis performance promises a unique and evocative concert experience by critically acclaimed Firebird Trio.  \nFounded in 2010\, Firebird Trio has performed nationwide to critical acclaim\, with a vibrancy of imagination that echoes the Stravinsky ballet suite they are named after.  \nPianist/composer Benjamin Martin has been identified by The Australian as ‘the best young talent for the new millennium’\, becoming known as an artist of exceptional versatility and subtlety of expression. \nViolinist Curt Thompson performs world-wide as concerto soloist\, recitalist\, concertmaster\, and chamber musician at venues including Carnegie Hall’s intimate Weill Recital Hall (NYC)\, Salle Gaveau (Paris)\, Teatro Naçional de Costa Rica (San José) and the Shanghai Concert Hall. \nCellist Josephine Vains performs around Australia and internationally to acclaim. Thriving on collaboration\, she explores the emotional relationship between musician and audience in chamber performance.  \nVains says; “For musicians and audiences alike\, the city of Vienna is hallowed musical ground. From Haydn and Beethoven to the ‘Waltz King’ Johann Strauss II\, Vienna has been a hugely inspiring cultural hub for centuries.” \nThe historic hall will have theatre-style seating for the hour and 50-minute concert\, including intermission. Boroondara Arts Bar will be open.
