Also\, enjoy the comedic charm of Menotti’s The Old Maid and the Thief\, directed by Professor Jane Davidson.\nWhether you’re a seasoned opera aficionado or simply curious to discover the next generation of operatic talent\, or a student considering your music future\, this festival is the perfect opportunity to be captivated by beautiful music\, compelling stories\, and the raw energy of rising stars. So come along\, support the future of opera\, and enjoy a weekend filled with unforgettable musical moments. \nThe Storm\nOriginal creator/singers: Qiulian Axtens\, Nicholas Beecher\, Lisette Bolton\, James Billson\, Genevieve Droppert\, Sofia Imperatore\, Chloe James\, Jesse Linke\, Saskia Mascitti\, Metehan Pektas\, Mitchell Sanders\, Noah Straughan\, Maria Woolford.\nCreator/percussionist: Brynn Jacka\nOriginal Project guided by Gillian Howell\, Sarah Woodland and Jane Davidson with Meta Cohen. \nAcross the weeks between August and October 2023\, the opera students undertook a creative project exploring the impact of the storm that hit Creswick in January 2022. SUMMARY:Art Song Festival 2023 - Schubert's 1823 Project: Secrets\, Longing and Dreams
DESCRIPTION:As part of Art Song Festival 2023\, we are delighted to announce the visit of renowned pianist\, accompanist\, and scholar\, Dr Graham Johnson OBE\, who will present Schubert’s 1823 Project. The festival features a weekend of two performances\, Secrets\, Longing and Dreams\, and Die schöne Müllerin \, where audiences are invited to observe him working with our undergraduate\, masters and recent Voice and Piano graduate students on this exciting project. \n1823 was a pivotal year in Franz Schubert’s life. From the depths of despair after his syphilis diagnosis to the heights of creation\, his output includes some of his best music for solo piano\, as well as operas\, but in the realm of Lieder\, this year is extraordinary. \nStarting Saturday October 7\, the 1823 Project will feature performances of all Schubert songs written that fateful year\, including some audience favourites\, such as Du bist die Ruh and Nacht und Träume. \nThe festival will culminate on Sunday October 8 with a complete presentation of Die schöne Müllerin\, the first of his great Song cycles. SUMMARY:Dorcas McClean Scholarship Finals
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the University of Melbourne\, the Dorcas McClean scholarship is the most prestigious violin competition in Australia\, attracting Australia’s most talented young players (17-25) who come from far and wide to compete. Each of the six contestants will present a full-length recital in Hanson Dyer Auditorium at the Ian Potter Southbank Centre at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music on 10 and 11 February 2022. Three finalists will be selected to perform a complete Mozart violin concerto on 13 February\, accompanied by the Melbourne Conservatorium’s Camerata Orchestra with conductor Richard Davis. The event will also feature a guest artist recital on 12 February. \nRepresenting the Australian National Academy of Music\, Colburn Conservatory of Music (Los Angeles)\, Hochschule für Musik und Theater (Munich)\, Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music at the University of Melbourne\, competitors include: David Carreon\, Leanne McGowan\, Mana Ohashi\, Emily Su\, Jackie Wong\, and Grace Wu. \nAlongside the competition\, the Conservatorium will present the inaugural Australian National Violin Conference. The ANVC will present performances\, master classes\, lectures and interviews exploring the rich heritage of Australian violin playing and teaching\, its roots and traditions\, and leading exponents of violinists through the generations.
