SUMMARY:Ensemble Liaison & Friends: Echoes of Vienna
DESCRIPTION:Ensemble Liaison opens its 2026 series with Echoes of Vienna.\nA program reflecting the rich musical currents that flowed through the cultural crossroads of fin-de-siècle Vienna. \nThe evening begins with Sergei Prokofiev’s spirited Overture on Hebrew Themes\, written for Russian-Jewish musicians in New York and drawing on folk melodies whose roots stretch back to Eastern Europe. The program also features the world premiere of The Drowned World by Australian composer Stuart Greenbaum\, a striking contemporary work inspired by the novel of J. G. Ballard and written for Ensemble Liaison. \nAnton Webern’s youthful Langsamer Satz reveals the composer before his radical modernism\, steeped in the lush expressive language of late-Romantic Vienna. The concert concludes with the richly lyrical Trio in D minor by Alexander Zemlinsky\, a work of sweeping Romantic intensity that was endorsed by Brahms and captures the emotional world of Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century. \nEnsemble Liaison is delighted to present this concert with their dear friend\, violinist Sophie Rowell together with the talented students of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. \nSergei Prokofiev Overture on Hebrew Themes  \nStuart Greenbaum The Drowned World (world premiere) \nAnton Webern Langsamer Satz for String Quartet (1905) \nAlexander von Zemlinsky Trio in D minor Op.3 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 09 April 2026 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: TBC. SUMMARY:Sophie Rowell and Kristian Chong play Sutherland and Beethoven
DESCRIPTION:Violinist Sophie Rowell is newly appointed to the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music as Associate Professor in Violin. Sophie and pianist Kristian Chong reunite for an iconic Sonata of Australian Margaret Sutherland along with Beethoven’s Kretuzer Sonata Op.47. The Sonata for Violin and Piano by prolific Australian composer Margaret Sutherland (1897-1984) is little known and\, surprisingly\, has been rarely performed since its 1925 premiere. It is a large-scale piece of half hour duration in three movements. The sonata is marked by striking individuality\, rejecting the pastoral idiom prevalent in much Australian music at the time\, and incorporates a wide range of moods. It is paired with perhaps the grandest of all of Beethoven’s Sonatas for Piano and Violin\, the Kreutzer\, which encompasses every gamut of human emotion possible in its sprawling and dramatic three movements.\n \nMARGARET SUTHERLAND Sonata for Violin and Piano \nLUDWIG BEETHOVEN Sonata for Piano and Violin Op47 (Kreutzer) \n\nTue\, 27 May\, 7:30pm – 9pm AEST \n\n\n\n\nHanson Dyer Hall\, Ian Potter Southbank Centre\n\n\nSouthbank VIC\, Australia\n\n\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:Melbourne Conservatorium of Music: Draevon - Between Light and Darkness
DESCRIPTION:Transfigured String Trio presents Russian composer Alfred Schnitkke’s extraordinary dark and compelling string trio in its original format composed in 1985 just prior to him suffering a severe stroke that led into a coma. After being declared clinically dead on several occasions\, he went on to survive and continued composing until his death in 1998. Schnittke counted Schubert’s music as one of his main influences from the Viennese school and this popular and sunny one movement Bb trio is considered a favourite among many of Schubert’s sublime works. \nIn between these two iconic pieces will be the world premiere of Australian Composer Angie Coffey’s original and scintillating composition “Draevon” which is inspired by a menacing part-dragon part-raven beast character in the Rapunzel’s Sister book series\, by authors Belinda Lui and Zoe Reddaway. \nPROGRAM\nFranz Schubert: String Trio no. 1 in Bb major\, D. 471\nAngie Coffey (2024) Draevon World premiere “Draevon” by Angie Coffey \nAlfred Schnittke (1985) String trio 1. SUMMARY:Art Song Festival 2023 - Schubert's 1823 Project: Secrets\, Longing and Dreams
DESCRIPTION:As part of Art Song Festival 2023\, we are delighted to announce the visit of renowned pianist\, accompanist\, and scholar\, Dr Graham Johnson OBE\, who will present Schubert’s 1823 Project. The festival features a weekend of two performances\, Secrets\, Longing and Dreams\, and Die schöne Müllerin \, where audiences are invited to observe him working with our undergraduate\, masters and recent Voice and Piano graduate students on this exciting project. \n1823 was a pivotal year in Franz Schubert’s life. From the depths of despair after his syphilis diagnosis to the heights of creation\, his output includes some of his best music for solo piano\, as well as operas\, but in the realm of Lieder\, this year is extraordinary. \nStarting Saturday October 7\, the 1823 Project will feature performances of all Schubert songs written that fateful year\, including some audience favourites\, such as Du bist die Ruh and Nacht und Träume. \nThe festival will culminate on Sunday October 8 with a complete presentation of Die schöne Müllerin\, the first of his great Song cycles. Graham Johnson is the greatest performer and scholar on Schubert’s Lieder and we are looking forward to collaborating with him on this ambitious project. \nOctober 7\, 5pm 8pm \nHanson Dyer Hall – Level 3;    The Ian Potter Southbank Centre 43 Sturt Street Southbank\, VIC 3006 \nTICKETS: $10 – $15
