SUMMARY:Gloriana Chamber Choir: SPEM IN ALIUM
DESCRIPTION:Gloriana’s second subscription concert in its 2017 season is built around one of the most celebrated of all choral works: Thomas Tallis’ monumental forty-part motet Spem in alium\, a work of such scale and vision that mark it as a watershed moment in music history.\n\nGloriana make a specialty of performing this work as the composer intended – in the round – so that the audience can follow the directional nature of the writing and be immersed in its sonic splendour. The opportunity to hear forty individual voices surrounding the audience is a singularly thrilling experience.\n\nTallis’ masterpiece will be woven into an all-English programme that includes Byrd’s equally imposing Tribue Domine\, Herbert Howells’ deeply moving Requiem\, Britten’s Five Flower Songs and works by Harris\, Jonathan Dove and others.\n\nYou can purchase tickets to Spem in Alium online now through our website www.gloriana.com.au \nDon’t miss the chance to hear this glorious work LIVE!

SUMMARY:Gloriana Chamber Choir presents: THE LITTLE MATCH GIRL PASSION
DESCRIPTION:The centrepiece of our first concert for 2017 is David Lang’s The Little Match Girl Passion\, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2008. \nA breathtakingly spare and deeply moving work\, Lang draws his inspiration from well-known fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. Developing the religious overtones of the original story\, Lang casts the young match girl’s tragic journey as a modern Passion Play. The resulting work is both minimalist and profound—an oratorio for today. \nOur concert also features James Macmillan’s sublime Miserere\, excerpts from the Tenebrae Responsories of Victoria and Gesualdo\, as well as music by Liszt and Sir John Tavener. \nBookings: www.gloriana.com.au or call (03) 8319 0942 \nWe look forward to seeing you there.

SUMMARY:Gloriana Chamber Choir: Bach Magnificat
DESCRIPTION:What better way to welcome in the Christmas season than with an all-Bach program?\n\n\n\nFor the fourth concert in our 2016 subscription series we present three of Bach’s most imposing works for Advent and Christmastide\, all of which are new to our repertoire.\n\n\n\nThe Magnificat BWV 243 was first heard on Christmas Day 1723 at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. Filled with vivid musical imagery and an intoxicating sense of joy\, the Magnificat is one of Bach’s most celebrated works.\n\n\n\nCantata BWV 63\, Christen ätzet diesen Tag is Bach’s earliest extant cantata for Christmas\, most likely composed for Weimar in 1713. The festive character of the music is enhanced by the lavish instrumental forces required: in addition to strings and continuo\, four trumpets\, timpani and three oboes are called for – an unprecedented scoring in Bach’s cantatas.\n\n\n\nCantata BWV 191 Gloria in excelsis Deo is a later work\, dating from 1745. The brilliant and colourful music in this cantata was later used by Bach in the Gloria of the Mass in B minor.\n\n\n\nFor this program\, Gloriana is thrilled to be joined by a handpicked orchestra of period instrumentalists and a quartet of distinguished soloists.\n\n\n\nWe look forward to sharing this magnificent music with you.\n\n\n\nGloriana Chamber Choir and Chamber Players directed by Andrew Raiskums.\n\n\n\nSoprano soloist: Erika Tandiono\n\n\nAlto soloist: Hamish Gould\n\n\nTenor soloist: Timothy Reynolds\n\n\nBass soloist: Jerzy Kozlowski\n\n\n\nTickets: $35 ($15 Student Rush at the door)\n\n\nBookings: www.gloriana.com.au or call (03) 8319 0942

SUMMARY:Gloriana Chamber Choir: Path of Miracles
DESCRIPTION:Joby Talbot’s Path of Miracles\, written in 2005\, was inspired by the Camino de Santiago – the great medieval pilgrimages to the Compostela de Santiago; the final resting place of the body of St. James. A large-scale work for acappella choir\, Path of Miracles evokes four of the major staging posts on the route: Roncesvalles in the Pyrenees in Northern Spain\, the cathedral cities of Burgos and León and Santiago de Compostela itself. Widely recognised as one of the most original and compelling choral works of our time\, Path of Miracles is an exhilarating and profoundly moving musical journey. \nGloriana is thrilled to be presenting the Melbourne premiere of Path of Miracles. We look forward to seeing you there. \n  \nWe have walked out of the lives we had \nAnd will return to nothing\, if we live\, \nChanged by the journey\, face and soul alike. \n  \nSantiago\, primus ex apostolis\, \nDefender of pilgrims\, warrior for truth\, \nTake from our backs the burdens of this life\, \n  \nWhat we have done\, who we have been; \nTake them as fire takes the cloth \nThey cast into the sea at Finisterre. \n  \nHoly St. James\, great St James\, \nGod help us now and evermore. \n  \nGloriana Chamber Choir directed by Andrew Raiskums \nTickets: $35 available through www.gloriana.com.au or call (03) 8319 0942 $15 Student Rush available at the door

SUMMARY:Gloriana: Rachmaninoff Vespers
DESCRIPTION:For our second 2016 subscription concert we are delighted to be presenting one of the most cherished of all choral works – the Rachmaninoff Vespers. \nThe Vespers stand as the crowning achievement of the Golden Age of Russian Orthodox sacred choral music. First heard in March 1915\, the Vespers instantly caught the public’s imagination and its popularity has never waned. Rachmaninoff drew his texts for the Vespers from a set of fifteen psalms and hymns associated with the Easter Vigil. Plainsong melodies from a variety of sources are used extensively. Rachmaninoff also calls for a much-divided choir and a prominently featured third bass section. Rachmaninoff’s music in the Vespers elevates the spirit through its emotional power and captivates the ear by its sheer beauty. \nDon’t miss the chance to hear this magnificent work live in concert. \nGloriana Chamber Choir directed by Andrew Raiskums. \nAlfred Schnittke (1934-1998) Three Choral Hymns\nSergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) Vespers (All-Night Vigil) \n2:30pm\, Sunday June 19 \nSacred Heart Roman Catholic Church\, cnr of Rathdowne and Pelham Sts\, Carlton \nTickets: $35 Bookings through www.gloriana.com.au or call\n(03) 8319 0942 $15 Student Rush tickets available at the door

SUMMARY:Passion and Resurrection
DESCRIPTION:Gloriana Chamber Choir present two magnificent Easter-themed works in their first concert for 2016. \nJames Macmillan’s Seven Last Words from the Cross was commissioned by the BBC in 1994. Scored for choir and string orchestra\, Seven Last Words is both a meditation on Christ’s suffering and also an intense\, full-fledged drama in which the composer explores the words in a very personal way. It is a riveting music journey from first note to last. \nLatvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds wrote his Passion and Resurrection in 2005. In a series of four tableau and with a collection of texts drawn from the gospels\, Byzantine and Roman liturgies and the Old Testament\, Passion and Resurrection is a unique and richly compelling work. As diverse musically as it is textually\, Passion and Resurrection contains moments of great drama and agitation yet moves towards a luminous and unforgettable conclusion. Gloriana are thrilled to be presenting the Melbourne premiere of this much-lauded work. \nBookings: www.gloriana.com.au or call (03) 8319 0942 \nWe look forward to seeing you there. \n
