SUMMARY:2026 Chamber Music Festival - Triptych of Shadows: Satie\, Ullmann\, Kouvaras
DESCRIPTION:Meditations on love\, death\, memory\, and what remains \nErik Satie’s luminous Socrate\, performed by soprano Lily Flynn and pianist Coady Green\, offers a serene\, translucent meditation on the philosopher’s final hours\, a work the composer called a “symphony in white.” Viktor Ullmann’s Die Weise von Liebe und Tod des Cornets Christoph Rilke\, with actor Paul English and Green\, transforms Rilke’s prose poem into a hallucinatory wartime monodrama composed in Theresienstadt before Ullmann’s death in Auschwitz. The program concludes with a world-premiere preview of Linda Kouvaras’s The Boarding House\, Carlton\, 1972: Those that Remain\, narrated by Tiriki Onus and featuring baritone Alex Owens\, with text by Richard Ward\, a searing reimagining of memory\, violence\, and 1970s Melbourne.

SUMMARY:2026 Chamber Music Festival - The Crossing Machine performs The Juliet Letters by Elvis Costello and The Brodsky Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Melbourne string quartet The Crossing Machine (violinists Marianne Rothschild and Matthew Rigby\, violist Margaret Butcher and cellist Charlotte Jacke) will be joined by vocalist Jordan Z to perform The Juliet Letters\, the genre-defying song cycle created by Elvis Costello in collaboration with The Brodsky Quartet. Originally released in 1993\, The Juliet Letters is a sequence of letters written to Shakespeare’s Juliet\, revealing a gallery of fractured lives\, longing\, regret\, and dark wit. Since beginning this project in 2018\, The Crossing Machine has been breathing new life into the work\, approaching it with deep respect for the score while bringing a distinctly contemporary energy and emotional clarity. The quartet is currently in the final stages of an exciting new CD release and this performance forms part of a small number of anticipated launch concerts planned for 2026.

SUMMARY:2026 Chamber Music Festival - Meta Cohen and Olivier Messiaen: Prophecy and Eternity
DESCRIPTION:A rare opportunity to encounter one of the twentieth century’s great visionary masterworks: Olivier Messiaen’s Visions de l’Amen\, performed by Coady Green and Marc Peloquin on two pianos. Composed during the Second World War\, this vast\, mystical meditation moves from creation and love to judgment and eternity\, revealing Messiaen as theologian\, mystic\, and ecstatic colourist. The program opens with Delphi Songs by Meta Cohen\, performed by Jessica Aszodi and Coady Green\, a haunting cycle inspired by prophecy and the final Oracle of Delphi\, whose voice foretold the end of her own sacred order. Also featured is Cohen’s brand new piano suite The Warning Never Heard\, based on the myth of Cassandra. Spanning millennia\, Cohen’s work contemplates revelation\, authority\, and the fading boundary between divine utterance and human mortality.

SUMMARY:fortyfivedownstairs Chamber Music Festival 2026: Brahms\, Liszt & Mendelssohn - Hungarian Fire and Italian Light
DESCRIPTION:Performers Josephine Vains (cello)\, Sofija Kirsanova (violin)\, Coady Green (piano)\, and Ricardo Roche Idini (piano) combine forces in this expansive celebration of Romantic colour\, vitality\, and collective virtuosity. The program begins with the complete set of 21 Hungarian Dances by Johannes Brahms. Arranged for piano four hands\, violin and cello\, and overflowing with melodic buoyancy\, rhythmic bite and emotional depth\, these dances remain among Brahms’s most captivating works. This is followed by Franz Liszt’s blazingly virtuosic Hungarian Rhapsody\, also arranged for piano four hands with strings\, and an arrangement of Felix Mendelssohn’s exuberant Symphony No. 4\, the Italian\, whose sunlit energy and lyrical sweep bring the concert to a jubilant close.

SUMMARY:fortyfivedownstairs Chamber Music Festival 2026: Beethoven 9th Symphony arranged by Franz Liszt
DESCRIPTION:Beethoven 9th Symphony arranged by Franz Liszt\n \nLegendary Australian pianist Michael Leslie returns from Germany to join Melbourne virtuoso Peter de Jager for a monumental musical event: Franz Liszt’s epic two-piano arrangement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. A towering feat of pianistic imagination\, Liszt’s arrangement is a complete re-creation of Beethoven’s orchestral\, choral\, and solo forces through the hands of just two performers. In this dazzlingly difficult tour de force\, two pianists at two pianos conjure the full sonic architecture of the symphony\, from its elemental opening to the transcendence of the “Ode to Joy.” Liszt\, himself the greatest piano virtuoso of the nineteenth century\, created these symphonic transcriptions to bring the orchestral canon to wider audiences before the age of recording. Today\, the Ninth Symphony arrangement remains one of the rarest and most formidable works in the entire piano duet repertoire\, seldom performed\, and even more rarely attempted live in concert. \nThursday 23 April\, 7:30pm

SUMMARY:fortyfivedownstairs Chamber Music Festival 2025: Lyric Opera - Their Voices Will Rise
DESCRIPTION:Prepare for an electrifying evening of world premieres and daring musical narratives. Australian rising star Meta Cohen unveils a thrilling and major new song cycle Kiss My Sword. With a libretto by Evan Bryson\, this fiercely queer reimagining of history plunges into the untamed world of Julie d’Aubigny—the 17th-century opera singer\, swordswoman\, and unapologetic rebel. A lover of women\, a defeater of men in duels\, and a trailblazing performer\, d’Aubigny’s story blazes across the stage – this opera explores her mythologisation and the multiplicity of stories about her. Scored for soprano\, mezzo-soprano\, and piano\, this premiere promises a powerful fusion of drama and desire. Being developed into a forthcoming full-scale opera production by renowned dramaturg/director Alyson Campbell\, this daring work is a major new addition to the classical Australian art song repertoire. \nAlongside Kiss My Sword\, the evening features Sally Whitwell’s luminous song cycle (He)art Songs—a deeply personal exploration of love\, identity\, and resilience\, written for tenor and piano with texts by Whitwell and Alex Gorbatov. The program concludes with Kevin March’s compelling Songs for Dark Times\, a raw and urgent outcry for our era\, set to the evocative words of Brecht\, Rilke\, and Bachmann. \nWith an internationally renowned cast bringing their talents to three exciting song cycles – mezzo-soprano Jessica Aszodi\, soprano Breanna Stuart\, soprano Livia Brash\, tenor Alex Gorbatov and pianist Coady Green\, and hosted by Lyric Opera Artistic Director Patrick Burns\, this is an unmissable night where music ignites the stage\, queer voices break boundaries\, and stories are told with unflinching truth. \nWednesday 14 May – 7:30pm \nfortyfivedownstairs \nTICKETS: $42 – $32 – currently sold out

SUMMARY:Divisi: Compose Queer x Queerstories
DESCRIPTION:Featuring twelve world-premiere commissions from twelve composers\, this boldly ambitious initiative sees the Divisi Chamber Singers\, one of Australia’s most exciting vocal ensembles\, partner with Maeve Marsden\, curator of the beloved Queerstories project. Divisi\, accompanied by pianist Coady Green\, will take audiences on a journey through stories of love\, pain\, joy\, and friendship in this unprecedented celebration of queer artistry and experience\, presented as part of Midsumma Festival 2025. \nTwelve queer composers draw inspiration from twelve queer writers to produce an anthology of completely new work\, performed in concert by the innovative\, youth-led choir Divisi Chamber Singers. Stories of resilience\, resistance and fierce queer pride\, set to music and sung in soaring harmony. This is not a stuffy matinée. This is where classical music meets club and cabaret. Creating connections across community\, each composer has selected a piece of writing from the Queerstories archive that spoke to their own identity\, creativity or experience. \nWith compositions by Sia Ahmad\, Lucy Blomfield\, Gabi Cadenhead\, Connor D’Netto\, Olivia Diamant\, Leila Harris\, Lillian Hearne\, Cameron Lam\, Caerwen Martin\, James Rushford\, Alex Turley and Sally Whitwell. \nDrawing inspiration from stories by Liz Duck-Chong\, Teddy Dunn\, HANDSOME\, Dmetri Kakmi\, Paul Kidd\, Fiona Kelly McGregor\, Tommy Misa\, Bastian Fox Phelan\, Fletcher Quilty and Omar Sakr. \nThis project marks the second iteration of Divisi’s Compose queer programming – developing work by emerging queer composers to tell our stories in new ways. Although there is a thriving amateur queer music scene of community organisations and hobby musicians\, there is limited opportunity for composers to express their queerness at a professional level. These programs give voice to tell stories at a professional quality of musical expression. \nDivisi Chamber Singers is a youth-led\, not-for-profit organisation that supports early-career creative artists. We strive to break down established norms of classical music through commissioning and performing innovative creative works and projects. \nQueerstories is a national LGBTQI+ storytelling project directed by Maeve Marsden for the last ten years\, with an award-winning podcast and events all around Australia\, from Sydney to Melbourne\, Hobart to Shepparton\, Newcastle to Brisbane\, to Albury\, Adelaide\, Mullumbimby\, Mudgee and beyond. \nThursday February 6 \, 7.30; Friday February 7\, 7.30; Saturday February 8\, 7.30; Sunday February 9\, 1.30\n \nfortyfivedownstairs \n$35 – $49 \n
