SUMMARY:Musica Viva: Garrick Ohlsson
DESCRIPTION:A titan of the piano returns in Garrick Ohlsson. Virtuosic yet powerful\, Ohlsson showcases his favourite composers while debuting a world premiere by Australian Thomas Misson.\nIn 1970 Garrick Ohlsson – a gangly pianist from White Plains\, New York\, all of 22 and unknown beyond his hometown – pulled off an astonishing feat: from nowhere he won the Chopin Competition in Warsaw\, the only American to have done so. Scriabin is one such example\, his powerful\, impressionistic music an ideal match for Ohlsson’s authoritative playing. He adores Barber and Schubert\, Debussy and Liszt too\, choosing this Australian tour for his first performance of the latter’s Sonata in B Minor in many years. His program also features a new work by the Australian composer Thomas Mission. \nSaturday 3 Program:  Franz Schubert: Impromptu in C Minor\, Op.90\, No.1; \nFranz Liszt: Piano Sonata in B Minor\, S.178;  Thomas Misson: New Work \nAlexander Scriabin: Étude in C-Sharp Minor\, Op.2\, No.1; Étude in D-Flat\, Op.8\, No.10; Étude in C-Sharp Minor\, Op.42\, No.5; Two Poems\, Op.32: Andante cantabile; Piano Sonata No.5\, Op.5 \nTuesday 13 Program: Claude Debussy: Suite bergamasque; Samuel Barber: Piano Sonata in E-Flat Minor\, Op.26 \nThomas Misson: New Work; Frédéric Chopin:  Variations brillantes\, Op.12; Piano Sonata No.1 in C Minor\, Op.4: Larghetto; Scherzo No.2 in B-Flat Minor\, Op.31 \n\nSaturday 3 & Tuesday 13 June 2023 7pm; Elisabeth Murdoch Hall; Duration: 1 hour 40 mins (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $158 ($134 Concession); A reserve $126 ($110 Concession); B reserve $95 ($82 Concession)\nC reserve $66 ($58 Concession); Under 40: A – C reserve $40

SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra: A Clockwork Orange and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Cult films\, synthesisers and an age of innovation\, featuring the iconic film scores of Wendy Carlos and more.\nMusic and image are inextricable in cinema. Blade Runner\, Solaris\, A Clockwork Orange. You see and hear them. Most of all\, you remember the way they made you feel. \nWe go to the movies to explore the innovations that shaped a generation of trailblazing composers and their unique sound worlds for the screen. Joining the ACO is electronic artist Will Gregory\, co-founder and member of internationally revered English electronic music duo Goldfrapp\, and an ensemble of Moog Synthesisers. \nPioneers Wendy Carlos and Delia Derbyshire opened the floodgates in the 1960s. Carlos interpreted Bach for the electronic age with Switched-On Bach while Delia Derbyshire gave Australian composer Ron Grainer’s theme for Doctor Who its indelible sci-fi sound. \nA Clockwork Orange is as much Carlos’s film as Stanley Kubrick’s. Its blend of original composition with synthesised treatments of classical music was audacious and wildly influential. Taking their cue from the innovations of Carlos and Derbyshire\, while looking back to Hollywood’s golden age\, sits the music of Vangelis\, John Williams and Hans Zimmer – some of the most affecting and iconic in cinema. \n\nSaturday 20 & Monday 22 May 2023\, 7.30pm; Elisabeth Murdoch Hall; Duration: 2 hours 30 mins (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $139 ($129 Concession); A reserve $124 ($114 Concession); B reserve $99 ($89 Concession)\nC reserve $79 ($69 Concession); D reserve $49

SUMMARY:Brodsky Quartet – Bach\, Britten\, Schubert
DESCRIPTION:A brilliantly imagined program of Bach\, Britten and Schubert.\nSince forming in 1972\, the Brodsky Quartet have performed over 3\,000 concerts on the major stages of the world and have released more than 70 recordings. A natural curiosity and an insatiable desire to explore has propelled the group in a number of artistic directions and continues to ensure them not only a prominent presence on the international chamber music scene\, but also a rich and varied musical existence. Their energy and craftsmanship have attracted numerous awards and accolades worldwide\, while their ongoing educational work provides a vehicle to pass on experience and stay in touch with the next generation. \nAbout the concert\nTheir performance in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall celebrates their 50th anniversary with a brilliantly imagined program of Bach\, Britten and Schubert. Weaving musical magic\, the legendary string quartet will demonstrate to audiences the fiercely focused and blazing integrity that comes from 50 years of collaboration and imagination. \n‘How has it been 50 years since we started this lifelong journey together? Looking back\, I find it wonderful that 10- and 12-year olds were already infused with passion and belief in the longevity that is now playing out. Two of us remain from the beginning\, one joined as we turned professional 40 years ago\, and our new fourth member has had her own similar path in the endlessly rewarding and fascinating life that is the String Quartet! We still gain a huge amount of pleasure in the endlessly fascinating vocation we have made our lives’ work. Rehearsals can delve with manic intensity into the minute detail of our craft\, as much now as when we were young and finding our collective voice. The passion remains in our hearts and\, we hope\, will still manage to thrill our audiences as we set off on this anniversary season!’ Brodsky Quartet \n\nWednesday 26 April 2023 7.30pm; Elisabeth Murdoch Hall; Duration: 1 hour 45 mins (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $79 ($59 Concession)

SUMMARY:ELISION – Extinction Events & Dawn Chorus
DESCRIPTION:Ecological listening to more-than-human worlds.\n‘Humans are tuned for relationship. The eyes\, the skin\, the tongue\, ears\, and nostrils—all are gates where our body receives the nourishment of others. This landscape of shadowed voices\, these feathered bodies and tumbling streams–these breathing shapes are our family.’ – David Abram \nELISION is celebrated for its unique instrumentation\, close and long-term artistic relationships with composers\, its virtuosity and the deep commitment of its musicians to renegotiate and re-invent performance practice and technique. \nAbout the concert\nTheir performance in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall as part of New Music Days 2023 presents virtuosic new sounds from one of the world’s leading new music groups. Featuring works by the inimitable Liza Lim\, Mary Bellamy and Aaron Cassidy\, this thought-provoking program explores pertinent environmental issues of our time\, celebrating the world premiere of Aaron Cassidy’s new piano concerto. \nLiza Lim’s composition Extinction Events & Dawn Chorus is a major Australian work that has resonated decisively with ensembles and audiences all over the world. It contemplates the vast conglomerations of plastic trash circulated in the world’s ocean currents\, eventually ground into toxic fragments that sediment on remote islands and within the fish we eat. Liza has made a music out of relics of the past – a coarse sampling of ‘extinction events’ ranging from the spectral echoes of a creaking 19th century piano music\, to a faulty transcription of a recording of the last mating call ever heard of the now extinct Kauai O’o bird. \nMary Bellamy’s Enveloped uses two seemingly quite different instruments\, the cello and contrabass recorder\, to forge a new whole\, a new sonic identity. The work is made up of imaginary dialogues and points of connection and disconnection. \nThe piano concerto conjures images of white tie and tails\, it conjures images of Brahms\, maybe of Schumann or Tchaikovsky. This is not that! Scored for an unusual ensemble including recorders\, harp and a pedal steel guitar Aaron Cassidy’s concerto has been especially written for solo pianist Alex Waite who brings iridescent brilliance to creating this world premiere. \nPost-Concert Talk\nPlease join Liza Lim\, Aaron Cassidy and Mary Bellamy for a post-concert talk from 9.20pm – 9.15pm. \n\nThursday 20 April 2023 7.30pm; Elisabeth Murdoch Hall; Duration: 1 hour 40 mins (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $30 ($20 Concession) \nNew Music Days Three-Concert Package\nStandard $60 ($45 Concession)

SUMMARY:The Gesualdo Six – The Wishing Tree
DESCRIPTION:From renaissance Europe to the present day.\nThe Gesualdo Six is an award-winning British vocal ensemble comprises some of the UK’s finest consort singers\, directed by Owain Park. Praised for their imaginative programming and impeccable blend\, the ensemble formed in 2014 for a performance of Gesualdo’s Tenebrae Responsories in Cambridge and has gone on to perform at numerous major festivals across UK\, Europe\, North America and Australia. \nAbout the concert\nTheir performance in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall presents a wide-ranging selection of inspiring vocal consort works from Thomas Tallis\, William Byrd\, Josquin des Prez\, Joby Talbot and more. \nThe first half of the program explores sacred music from the Renaissance in Europe\, written at a time of great change and fuelled by religious division. Works by Byrd and Tomkins move through startling harmonic shifts and expressive word paintings. These pieces will be performed alongside works from the tradition of the Oltremontani. This tradition saw composers travel ‘over the mountains’ to Italy to seek pedagogy and patronage. \nThe latter half of the program explores works by composers from this same school\, tracing the evolution of the madrigal form and finally leading to a selection of contemporary pieces which reinvent these old compositional techniques. \n\nTuesday 28 March 2023 7.30pm; Elisabeth Murdoch Hall; Duration: 1 hour 30 mins (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $79 ($59 Concession) \nBuy & Save – Book tickets to two or more Chamber Now concerts and save.\nBook two concerts and save 10%; Book three concerts and save 15%

SUMMARY:Sonya Lifschitz – Creative Women
DESCRIPTION:A musical ode to women who have shaped our world.\nFollowing on from the success of their acclaimed work Stalin’s Piano\, Sonya Lifschitz and Robert Davidson deliver Creative Women — an audio-visual epic for solo piano and video that tells stories of female artists\, scientists and politicians through the words of the subjects made musical. \nA musical portrait gallery of creators spanning a millennium\, Creative Women weaves together archival audio\, narrative and music in a tapestry of stories celebrating discovery. SUMMARY:Tinalley String Quartet with Lior: Through Nature to Eternity
DESCRIPTION:Tinalley String Quartet\, one of Australia’s finest and internationally recognised chamber ensembles presents their first program for the 2016 season\, Through Nature to Eternity with special guest artist\, ARIA awarded singer/songwriter Lior. \n Made up of Adam Chalabi (1st violin)\, Lerida Delbridge (2nd violin)\, Justin Williams (viola) and Michelle Wood (cello)\, Tinalley String Quartet has been inspired to move in a new direction in 2016\, presenting programs that merge the classical world of the string quartet with new commissions and collaborations. The concert experience of Through Nature to Eternity is true to this path\, drawing on the richness of tradition\, yet reaching out to the modern world and challenging the senses. \nOpening with Ravel’s effusive String Quartet in F Major\, one of the genres most beloved works\, the program takes shape of a musical narrative of love\, loss and compassion with the world premiere of Song Cycle by Lior and Melbourne composer\, Ade Vincent. This composition features the words of Dylan Thomas’ Do not go gentle into that good night and Hazel Hall’s Hours. The Quartet then explores echoes of love cherished\, tormented and forgotten in three of Dvořák’s rousing love songs from his collection of rarely played Cypresses. \nLior takes centre stage with the achingly beautiful My Grandfather from his album Scattered Reflections\, a deeply personal song referencing his grandfather’s escape from Polish concentration camps and ensuing life as a Russian sniper. \nBarber’s haunting Adagio from his String Quartet Opus 11\, a work now associated with times of mourning\, is brought to life by Tinalley in its original form for string quartet. Concluding the evening is a reimagining of Sim Shalom from Nigel Westlake’s Compassion\, written in collaboration with Lior for the Sydney Symphony in 2013. This performance offers audiences a more intimate musical experience of the work that draws from the rich worlds of Islam and Judaism. It is in essence\, a collection of profound and poetic messages inspiring the idea of compassion between human beings. \n“I have been a great admirer of the Tinalley String Quartet for many years and have had the privilege of previously working with some of its members on my own album recordings. Coupled with the opportunity to write with such a fine young composer in Ade Vincent on a song cycle\, as well as performing a string quartet adaptation of a movement from my recent collaborative work with Nigel Westlake – ‘Compassion’ – this concert is personally a very appealing event to be a part of\, ” said Lior. \nLerida Delbridge\, 2nd Violinist of the Tinalley String Quartet first worked with Lior in 2004:“I first met Lior when I recorded one of the string lines for his song\, ‘This Old Love’. At that moment\, I knew that here was a musician with a uniquely beautiful voice and the rare ability to capture raw emotion in song.   I have had the privilege of working with Lior many times for various music festivals and recordings\, but this is the first time that we have worked together from a ‘classical’ point of view! Given his stunning work with Nigel Westlake in Compassion\, I can’t wait to see this beautiful project come to life”. \nPerformances in the intimate surrounds of the Utzon Room at the Sydney Opera House on May 2 and 3\, and the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall at the Melbourne Recital Centre on May 4\, offer the opportunity to experience an evocative evening of music making with TInalley String Quartet and the truly remarkable voice of Lior. \nPROGRAM: \nRavel String Quartet in F major \nAde Vincent/Lior Song Cycle (World Premiere)* \nDvorak Cypresses 2\, 3 & 4 for String Quartet \nLior My Grandfather \nBarber Adagio from String Quartet Opus 11 \nNigel Westlake/Lior Sim Shalom from Compassion for String Quartet & Voice# \n*Commissioned by Melbourne Recital Centre \n# Commissioned by Julian Burnside QC \nEVENT DETAILS: \nMelbourne \n4 May 2016\, 7.30pm\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall\, Melbourne Recital Centre \nBookings – Ph. 03 9699 3333 or melbournerecital.com.au \nCost: Adults $50 · Concession $40 · Under 30 $30  \nMore information: www.tinalley.com.au
