SUMMARY:Melbourne Bach Choir St Matthew Passion
DESCRIPTION:The Melbourne Bach Choir and Melbourne Baroque Orchestra conducted by Rick Prakhoff present the St Matthew Passion by J.S. Bach\, sung in German. Two adult choirs\, a children’s choir\, two orchestras and outstanding Australian soloists will fill Melbourne Recital Centre with this extraordinary\, dramatic telling of the Passion story\, written to be performed on Good Friday. \nThe Choir’s 2022 performance of this work received a five minute ovation with The Age saying ‘a sterling interpretation of the long Bach Passion’ and Classic Melbourne claiming this ‘concert was a triumph.’ \nAndrew Goodwin again brings his beautiful high tenor to the role of the Evangelist. Adrian Tamburini will sing Christus\, together with aria soloists Lorina Gore\, Sally-Anne Russell\, Henry Choo\, Simon Meadows and Christopher Hillier. \nFrom the darkly evocative orchestral opening Bach creates a narrative more compelling than that of any opera of the period. Sung in German\, this extraordinary musical journey is the perfect reflection for Good Friday.

SUMMARY:Melbourne Recital Centre & the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) Mostly Mozart – Mannheim to Paris
DESCRIPTION:Mozart’s self-described best.\nMusicians from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM)\, alongside director and ANAM horn alum Carla Blackwood\, present a morning of music that unites winds and strings. \nA 28-year-old Mozart considered the Quintet in E-flat one of his greatest works. This piece effortlessly balances wind timbres against piano in an ever changing sequence of melodic development. Written at the peak of his compositional powers\, this ever-popular work\, combining complexity with charming musical conversation\, radiates with an alchemy that is distinctly Mozart. \nThe exploration of Mozart’s great works continues in his Quintet for Horn and Strings\, which distinctly features just a single violin and cello\, along with two violas. Breaking the traditional string quartet format\, the addition of the two violas provides this stunning work with a blend of brightness and depth. This unique ensemble provides the perfect accompaniment to the star of the piece – the horn. \nReceiving long overdue recognition\, the 19th-century French composer Louise Farrenc’s Sextet for winds and piano in C Minor is sandwiched between the two Mozart masters. Overflowing with warmth and appealing melodies\, Farrenc’s intimate 20-minute work is a perfect addition for a morning of music that will enliven the spirit. \nCarla Blackwood director/horn (ANAM Alum\, 2000); ANAM Musicians \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart Quintet in E-flat\, K.452 \nLouise Farrenc Sextet in C Minor\, Op.40 \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart Quintet for Horn and Strings in E-flat\, K.407 \nMorning Tea\nJoin us for a complimentary morning tea of coffee\, tea\, sweet treats and savoury delights from 10am in the ground floor foyer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday 01 April 2026 – 11:00am \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval). SUMMARY:Pinchgut Opera: Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach performed by Erin Helyard
DESCRIPTION:Bach’s sublime variations\, brought to life by one of Australia’s great musical storytellers.\nExperience one of the greatest works in the keyboard repertoire – Bach’s Goldberg Variations – in the hands of Erin Helyard\, Australia’s most distinguished harpsichordist and Artistic Director of Pinchgut Opera. Originally composed to soothe and enchant\, the Goldberg Variations offers a vast musical universe built from a single elegant aria. Across thirty variations\, Bach weaves complexity\, joy\, tenderness\, and brilliance into an intricate architectural whole\, a testament to the boundless imagination of the Baroque. \nPerformed on harpsichord\, as Bach intended\, Helyard’s interpretation reveals the clarity\, intimacy\, and vitality often lost on modern instruments. Each variation unfolds like a miniature world\, alive with wit\, colour\, and emotion. A rare opportunity to hear this monumental work performed with authenticity\, insight\, and luminous artistry. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 19 February 2026 – 7:30pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour 10 mins (no interval). DESCRIPTION:Following triumphant performances in Australia and the UK\, Musica Viva Australia is thrilled to present A Winter’s Journey.\nA Winter’s Journey is a reimagining of Franz Schubert’s Winterreise\, a collection of songs mapping a winding path from love to despair\, anger and hope. SUMMARY:Roomful of Teeth
DESCRIPTION:Voices beyond borders.\nRoomful of Teeth is the Grammy-winning vocal band distinct from any vocal group you’ve ever heard. Eight voices will soar in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall\, revealing an extraordinary sonic landscape that reminds us how the boundaries of the human voice are never what they seem. \nThe band defies traditional conventions with their adventurous world-building and contemporary classical precision. Presenting works from their lauded album Rough Magic and a kaleidoscope of works from the band’s expansive catalogue\, this high-powered and poignant octet dissolves boundaries between the ancient and cutting-edge experimentation. \nRoomful of Teeth has collaborated with artists\, thinkers\, and community leaders from around the world\, including celebrated composers Caroline Shaw and Missy Mazzoli. The North American ensemble exhibits their ‘consistently yet freshly cutting-edge’ (Gramophone) style of music-making\, awakening forgotten sensations and reimagining choral music for the 21st century. \nWednesday 11 February 2026 – 7:30pm \nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval). SUMMARY:Van Diemen's band: Where Everything is Music
DESCRIPTION:The Persian music of Afghanistan meets baroque.\nTasmanian Baroque ensemble Van Diemen’s Band invites listeners to experience a stunning blend of two distinct musical worlds. Created for MONA FOMA 2023 and performed to sold-out audiences\, this cross-cultural collaboration with Ensemble Kaboul features musicians Khaled Arman (rubab) and Siar Hashimi (tablā and vocals). Embodying artistry and advocacy\, this performance preserves and celebrates musical traditions Afghanistan’s current regime is attempting to silence. \nImmerse yourself in the warm\, resonant tones of Van Diemen’s Band’s period instruments as they interweave with the intricate melodic patterns of traditional Afghan and Persian music\, while soaring vocals merge with the ethereal late 19th century piano compositions of Erik Satie. Traditional Persian compositions have been harmoniously arranged for this ensemble\, and Western classical pieces were selected for their fluid\, contemplative style\, creating a seamless interplay between Central Asian and European musical traditions. \n\n\n\n\n\nEnsemble Kaboul\nKhaled Arman rubab (Afghan lute)\nSiar Hashimi vocals\, tablā\, percussion\nMasud Hashimi percussion \nVan Diemen’s Band \nJulia Fredersdorff artistic director\, baroque violin\nLuke Plumb mandolin\nRachel Meyers viola\nLaura Vaughan viola da gamba\, violone\nMartin Penicka violoncello\nDonald Nicolson harpsichord \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgram \nF.A Naynawaz arr. SUMMARY:Melbourne Bach Choir: Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana
DESCRIPTION:One of the best-known works in the entire choral repertory will be performed in Melbourne this September. From the opening chorus of O Fortuna – an earworm familiar not only from the concert hall\, but also from its use in countless films and commercials – the passion and pace of this music are unstoppable. \nSoloists will be soprano Jane Magão (currently touring in Opera Australia’s La Bohème); Melbourne favourite\, baritone Christopher Hillier; and tenor Robert Macfarlane in a hilarious cameo as the roasting swan. The concert will also feature the Australian Children’s Choir\, making their debut performance with Melbourne Bach Choir\, and will be conducted by Rick Prakhoff. \nCarmina Burana will be presented in the version for two pianos (Elyane Laussade and Kathryn Pisani) and percussion.

SUMMARY:Melbourne Recital Centre & Australian National Academy of Music: Mostly Mozart – Eine kleine Nachtmusik
DESCRIPTION:The many moods of Mozart and Shostakovich take centre stage.\nOpening with unique brass arrangements of two of Mozart’s most profound moments – the Kyrie and Lacrimosa from his Requiem – this Wednesday morning performance begins with power and pathos. Intensities deepen as Shostakovich’s searing Chamber Symphony takes flight under the direction of ANAM’s Head of Violin Adam Chalabi. Inspired by his own String Quartet No.8\, Shostakovich’s deeply personal 25-minute work was written in just three days and is filled with haunting meditations on loss and survival. \nTo round out this hour-long expedition through the many moods of Mozart and Shostakovich\, ANAM Musicians present Mozart at his most delightful in Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. With melodies sparkling throughout the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall\, the classical charm of this Mozart masterpiece is the perfect conclusion for a journey from the sacred to the secular; the tragic to the triumphant. \nMorning Tea \nJoin us for coffee plus sweet and savory treats from 10am in the ground floor foyer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nDates & Times\n\nWednesday 03 September 2025 – 11:00am \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval). SUMMARY:JACK Quartet – String Creatures
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Australian premiere of a new Liza Lim work\, performed by one of the planet’s top quartets.\nChampions of 20th and 21st-century string quartet music\, JACK Quartet has been described by its home-city publication as being the ‘expert in the most ferociously difficult modern scores’ (The New Yorker)\, and for good reason. \nSince first joining forces almost 20 years ago\, JACK Quartet’s reputation for being one of the most respected experimental string quartets has continued to build. Known as contemporary music celebrities\, JACK Quartet explored their untapped skills as magicians and escape artists during workshops with Liza Lim for String Creatures. Co-commissioned by Melbourne Recital Centre\, the struggling echoes of being trapped felt in the first movement were directly inspired by John Richards – the Quartet’s violist – attempting to free his hands after being tied to the neck of his instrument during an early workshop. \nThe fascination with string and rope continued throughout the creative process for one of Australia’s most successful contemporary composers: ‘There’s something magical about string … A string retains every twist and turn that it encounters’ (Liza Lim). \nRuth Crawford Seeger’s time capsule String Quartet 1931 precedes the Australian premiere of String Creatures. Written in Germany but often described as an active dismissal of the latest in European musical trends\, String Quartet 1931 cemented her among the most daring and accomplished American avant-garde composers. Similarly\, Elliott Carter was determined to shatter the status quo when he wrote his inaugural String Quartet\, proclaiming that he wanted to break free from his ‘professional and social responsibility to write interesting\, direct\, easily understood music.’ A desire that can be felt and heard throughout\, even in the moments of heart and soul hidden deep within the notes. \n\nWednesday 10 April 2024 7pm; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 45 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: A reserve $55. SUMMARY:The Spooky Men's Chorale
DESCRIPTION:Experience a performance as spooky as it is striking.\nFormed in 2001\, The Spooky Men’s Chorale is a vast\, rumbling\, steam powered and black clad behemoth\, seemingly accidentally capable of rendering audiences moist eyed with mute appreciation or haplessly gurgling with merriment. Based on the twin pillars of grand foolishness and the quest for the perfect subwoofer-rattling boofchord\, the Spooky Men seek to commentate on the absurdity and grandeur of the modern male armed only with their voices\, a sly collection of hats and facial hair\, and a twinkle in the eye. \nAbout the concert\nIn this delicious live performance\, The Spooky Men’s Chorale dig deep into their multifarious themes: Georgian male polyphony; a running joke on man as a vast\, oblivious useless object; whispers of clown\, bouffon and Monty Python; and forays into massively pleasurable grunting tribalism. \nAudiences are invited to first joyously endure a wall of mansound\, then laugh stupidly\, before venturing into areas of great tenderness. It is not so much comedic as hilarious\, not so much shimmeringly perfect as human in a very deeply resonant way. \n\nFriday 28 July 2023 7.30pm  Elisabeth Murdoch Hall   Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $60 ($50 Concession)

SUMMARY:Australian Brandenburg Orchestra: Ottoman Baroque
DESCRIPTION:Spellbinding visions of unity and peace\nBeautiful\, graceful\, peaceful – the Whirling Dervishes of the Sufi Mevlevi Order from Konya\, Turkey join the Brandenburg onstage. The lights dim and the mystic ceremony begins. The sounds of the Ottoman instruments\, rare\, pure and ravishing\, the choral sounds of the Brandenburg Choir chanting the poems of Jalaluddin Rumi\, the exotic mystic poet whose combination of richness and bold adaptations of music poetry form the key to his popularity today. \nOttoman Baroque will be mesmerising and spine-tingling. This unique concert experience spurs from a meeting of minds between Serhat Sarpel\, Hakan Talu and Paul Dyer in Istanbul\, where together they devised a program following the path of an ancient16thcentury Ottoman manuscript by Albert Bobowski (Ali Ufki). \nIn a rare appearance in Australia\, the concert will reach a climax with the Whirling Dervishes spinning gracefully into a trance as they purify their heart to commune with the divine in this unique Sufi ceremony. SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble: Ecstatic Dances
DESCRIPTION:Dance\, dance\, otherwise we are lost.\nWhen Ross Edwards composed his first Ecstatic Dance in 1978\, he discovered an idiosyncratic and kinetic way of writing. It was a formative moment\, from which emerged the composers’ iconic and infectiously jubilant style that defined a generation of Australian classical music. In his 80th birthday year\, Omega Ensemble gives the world premiere of a new Clarinet Concerto led by Artistic Director David Rowden. \nAn ode to the infectious spirit of rhythm and dance\, this premiere work is accompanied and Phillip Glass’ epic Violin Concerto No.2\, performed by UK violin maverick Thomas Gould. Entitled ‘The American Four Seasons’\, the legendary composers’ electrifying concerto is a visceral homage to the forces of nature\, packed full of dizzying twists and turns\, turbo-charged drive and heart-stopping intensity. \n\nWednesday 5 July 2023 7pm; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall;  Duration: 1 hour 30 mins (no interval)wa \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $119\, A reserve $89 ($79 Concession); B reserve $69 ($59 Concession)\nC reserve $49 ($39 Concession); Under 30 $39
