SUMMARY:The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Bruckner 4 – The Romantic
DESCRIPTION:The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra presents masterpieces by Bruckner and Ravel and a Victorian premiere by Australian composer Elliott Gyger.\nThis concert\, given by the University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra\, culminates in Bruckner’s Symphony No 4. Written in 1874 and nicknamed The Romantic by the composer\, it was revised many times. The University of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will perform the 1878/80 version. There is evidence that Bruckner wrote this as a programmatic piece\, depicting life\, prayer\, and\, most notably in the third movement\, a hunt in the forest. \nThe concert begins with Ravel’s ballet Daphnis et Chloé (Suite No. 2). The story at this point in the narrative follows Chloé and her imminent reunion with Daphnis. After a musically spectacular sunrise\, and as a tribute to Pan (who has just rescued Chloé from pirates)\, the two re-enact the mythological story of Pan and Syrinx. \nJust before the interval\, the ensemble will perform the Victorian premiere of Elliott Gyger’s Concerto for Orchestra. Like the Bruckner\, Gyger’s structure is a marriage of beauty\, balance\, and symmetry. \n\nSunday 13 August 2023 5pm;   Elisabeth Murdoch Hall;   Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval)l \n  \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: This event is free to attend however tickets are required. Currently sold out.

SUMMARY:Musicians of the Gewandhaus Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:A showcase of unmissable musicianship at its finest.\nThese select musicians from the Gewandaus Orchestra bring with them an unmissable musicianship and carry a tradition unlike any other. The Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig is the world’s oldest orchestra\, and this performance is the ultimate opportunity to witness some of Germany’s most in-demand musicians presenting an intimate performance of\, and inspired by\, Schubert’s Octet in F. \nAbout the concert\nAn exploration of a more intimate form of music-making\, Schubert’s Octet with its warm yet heartfelt moments\, was written at a time in the composer’s life when writing songs and symphonies was on hiatus. The result is a six-movement masterpiece that elegantly and carefully represents a cross-section of the symphony orchestra. \nOpening the concert\, and with inspiration from the Octet\, is Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen’s arrangement of Schubert’s Six Moments Musicaux – originally written for solo piano\, but in an arrangement especially commissioned for this Australian tour. \n\nFriday 4 August 2023 7.30pm; Elisabeth Murdoch Hall; Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $79 ($59 Concession)

SUMMARY:Songmakers Australia – A Crown of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Love is the greatest inspiration.\nUnique in the musical landscape of Australia\, Songmakers Australia brings together some of the country’s leading singers and instrumentalists in a diverse repertoire comprising some of the pinnacles of all chamber music. \nUnder the artistic patronage of Graham Johnson\, pianist Andrea Katz teams with soprano Merlyn Quaife\, mezzosoprano Christina Wilson\, tenor Brenton Spiteri and bass-baritone Nicholas Dinopoulos in inspired programs that feature a dynamic interplay of song and chamber music. \nAbout the concert\nTheir performance in Primrose Potter Salon presents passionate works from Wagner and Berg. Love is the greatest inspiration for poetry and songs. ‘To the Angel who has lifted me so high’ – with those words Wagner dedicated his only song cycle to his muse\, poetess and paramour\, Mathilde Wesendonk. \nBerg’s Seven Early Songs were also inspired by the love in his life\, his wife Helene. Emotionally and musically attached to the great German Romantic style\, it reflects Berg’s obsession with driving back to the beginning. \n\nTuesday 21 March 2023 6pm; Primrose Potter Salon; Duration: 1 hour (no interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $37 ($30 Concession)

SUMMARY:Dvořák: Stabat Mater\, Op.58
DESCRIPTION:Dvořák: Stabat Mater\, Op.58\nElisabeth Murdoch Hall\, Melbourne Recital Centre\n\nAntonín Dvořák: Stabat Mater\, Op.58Sunday 24 February 2019  10.00am\nElisabeth Murdoch Hall\, Melbourne Recital Centre \n  \nAndrew Wailes\, conductor\nMerlyn Quaife AM\, soprano\nEmily Bauer-Jones\, contralto\nMichael Lapiña\, tenor \nMarkus Matheis\, baritone\nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir\nRoyal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra  \nDuration: 1 hour 30 mins (no interval) \n  \nThe 3MBS Fine Music Melbourne 2019 Dvořák Marathon brings Australia’s finest classical musicians together for an immersive all-day experience celebrating the works of Antonín Dvořák. \nAcross six concerts in a single day\, the 3MBS Dvořák Marathon program celebrates some of the best and lesser-known chamber music including a vast collection of solo piano works. \nA highlight performance will be the magnificent Stabat Mater\, performed by the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra in the opening concert of the marathon\, conducted by Andrew Wailes. They will be joined by and international cast of four superb soloists: the Australian soprano Merlyn Quaife AM\, British contralto Emily Bauer-Jones\, the Filipino-Australian tenor Michael Lapiñaand German baritone Markus Matheis. \nOther performances include The Australian Children’s Choir\, Corpus Medicorum\, Melbourne Chamber Orchestra\, Stefan Cassomenos\, Calvin Bowman\, Wilma Smith\, Sutherland Trio and 2018 Yehudi Menuhin International Competition winner Christian Li. Making their Marathon debuts are the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) and Orava Quartet. \n  \nABOUT DVOŘÁK’S STABAT MATER\nStabat Mater Op. 58\, for soli\, choir and orchestra by the Czech composer Antonín Dvořák must surely rank as one of the finest and most most emotionally–charged choral works of the 19th century. \nThe work was sketched in 1876 and completed in 1877\, composed as Dvořák’s reaction to the tragic death of his daughter\, Josefa. The sketch was dedicated to František Hušpauer “as a souvenir to the friend of his young days.” However\, Dvořák was forced to postpone the orchestration of the work due to his other personal and professional obligations. He returned to the final stylisation of the work in 1877\, when\, almost unbelievably\, his two surviving children died within a short time of each other. \nThe definitive version of the score was written between the beginning of October and 13 November 1877 in Prague\, and contains some of the most heart-achingly beautiful music of Dvořák’s entire musical output. It is a melodically beautiful and deeply affecting piece\, which uses the superb vocal\, choral and orchestral writing to convey the dramatic and humanistic verses of the Stabat Mater with a great sense of gravitas and profundity. The Stabat Mater is a famous 13th-century Christian hymn to Mary\, which portrays her suffering as Jesus Christ’s mother during his crucifixion. Given the circumstances of this composition\, it is little wonder that Dvořák’s setting is considered one of the finest examples of any composer’s setting of these tragic and powerful words.\nThe Stabat Mater was Dvořák’s very first work on a religious theme. It is divided into ten individual parts; only the first and the last part are thematically connected. The first performance took place on 23 December 1880 at the concert of the Association of Musical Artists in Prague. The performers included the operatic ensemble of the Czech Provisional Theatre\, under the conductor Adolf Čech. The composer Leoš Janáček conducted the work a year and half later\, on 2 April 1882\, in Brno. Performances abroad (Budapest\, London) soon ensued and the work quickly established itself as a true masterpiece. \nDon’t miss this chance to hear this magnificent work performed by one of Melbourne’s finest choirs\, and four superb Australian soloists\, under the baton of Andrew Wailes. \nThe Australian premiere of Antonín Dvořák’s Stabat Mater\, Op.58 was given by The Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra  on 29 September 1885 at the Melbourne Town Hall\, conducted by David Lee.  \n  \nSingle Tickets\nPremium $75\nStandard $34 ($25 Concession)\nFamily $70 \nA Transaction Fee between $5.50 and $8 applies to orders made online and by phone. A Delivery Fee of up to $5.50 may also apply. \nPresented by 3MBS Fine Music Melbourne
