SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Prodigies
DESCRIPTION:MSO Concertmaster Dale Barltrop and Melbourne teenage legend Christian Li team up for this program celebrating prodigious musical talent.\nThe youngest ever recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for music\, American composer Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte for string orchestra curiously peers at tried-and-true classical forms through a contemporary lens. The result? Lyrical and playful\, with a touch of the absurd. \nIn a masterful display of virtuosity and musical maturity well beyond his years\, Mozart wrote his Violin Concerto No.3 while still a teenager at just 19. In a pairing of prodigious minds\, thrilling ARIA-nominated Australian violinist Christian Li (he’s still younger than Mozart was) performs this divine concerto. \nWhile Mendelssohn’s official First Symphony was written when he was 15\, he had in fact written thirteen already by the time he was 14\, which are not counted in the official numbering system. This Symphony announced Mendelssohn as a serious compositional voice in Europe. With its explosive opening and lyrical melodies\, it serves as a musical embodiment of the eagerness and energy of youth. \nPre-Concert Talk: Please join Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for a pre-concert talk in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall from 6.45pm – 7.10pm.\n\nSaturday 2 September 2023 7.30pm; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 40 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $105 ($100 Concession); A reserve $87 ($82 Concession); B reserve $65 ($60 Concession)\nC reserve $55 ($50 Concession) CURRENTLY SOLD OUT

SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia: Silk\, Metal\, Wood
DESCRIPTION:Come along for a surprising and joyous journey traversing traditional and modern works. Global stars and a global instrument combine in a performance to delight.\nThis program started with an invitation to the fascinating French cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras – a human vessel of his instrument’s soulful beauty\, and a musician known for his sense of artistic adventure. He leapt at the chance to work with one of Australia’s musical treasures: Satsuki Odamura\, a grand master of the koto – a plucked Japanese zither – resident in Sydney for more than 30 years. They welcomed one of Adelaide’s young stars\, cellist James Morley\, into the mix – a trio of passionate musicians inspired by the love of their instruments and an endless delighted curiosity for finding new sounds to play. \nSuch a gorgeous palette of colours and textures is inspiration for Australian composer Jakub Jankowski\, who will create a brand-new trio for them\, nestled amongst solo suites by Bach and Britten\, traditional and modern works for koto\, and a gleeful duo from Offenbach. \n\nTuesday 15 & Saturday 26 August 2023 7pm;  MRC  Elisabeth Murdoch Hall;   Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $158 ($134 Concession); A reserve $126 ($110 Concession); B reserve $95 ($82 Concession)\nC reserve $66 ($58 Concession); Under 40 A – C reserve $40
