SUMMARY:Melbourne Chamber Orchestra: Nightingale
DESCRIPTION:Baroque and modern treasures in an explosion of colour and energy.\nHarpsichordist Donald Nicolson brings an infectious enthusiasm and a sparkling musicality to everything he does. SUMMARY:Brooklyn Rider: Citizenship Notes
DESCRIPTION:A quartet that defies boundaries.\nBrooklyn Rider is far from your classic string quartet. This fearless\, boundary-pushing ensemble from New York operates at the intersection of tradition and reinvention\, proving time and again that the string quartet is a living\, breathing force of musical exploration. Whether you’re drawn to the classical greats or thrive on contemporary twists\, Brooklyn Rider is renowned for electrifying senses and powerful performances across the world. \nReturning to Melbourne Recital Centre after their critically acclaimed debut\, Brooklyn Rider brings a daring program that spans centuries and genres\, exploring what it means to be part of a community\, a society\, a world in flux. \nFrom the revolutionary strains of Haydn’s Op.20 No.5 – music that shattered conventions in its time – to the radical urgency of Matana Roberts’ borderlands…\, a searing reflection on the US-Mexico border crisis\, this program is both exhilarating and thought-provoking in equal measure. Gabriel Kahane’s American Studies brings a haunting\, contemporary resonance\, paving the way for Bob Dylan’s timeless protest anthem The Times They Are A-Changin’\, arranged by the quartet’s own Colin Jacobsen. And in a triumphant finale\, Beethoven’s Op.59 No.3 ‘Razumovsky’ surges with heroic\, egalitarian energy\, its breathtaking conclusion leaving no doubt as to why it remains one of the most exhilarating works in the chamber repertoire. \nFor the adventurous listener\, this is classical music at its most daring – vivid\, urgent\, and deeply relevant. For the classical traditionalist\, this is a masterfully woven journey through the rich and evolving possibilities of the string quartet. No matter where you stand\, Citizenship Notes will challenge\, captivate\, rally and inspire audiences from beginning to end. \nPlease note\, for this concert the audience is seated on the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall stage\, connecting you up-close and personal with Brooklyn Rider. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday 05 November 2025 – 7:30pm \nMRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour 45 mins (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Melbourne Chamber Orchestra: Daybreak
DESCRIPTION:Close friends and inspiring colleagues.\nMCO’s season opens with an enchanting work by our very own violist/composer Matt Laing\, whose deep familiarity with the orchestra really highlights the MCO’s warm\, burnished sound. \nWe follow with the much-loved Mozart Clarinet Concerto starring David Griffiths on his new basset clarinet with its rich\, mellow tone. David is widely sought after as one of Australia’s great soloists and we’re delighted to share his brilliant playing with you in Mozart’s masterpiece. \nAfter interval\, we celebrate the music of George Walker\, the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music. His reflective work\, Lyric for Strings\, contains echoes of American folk songs\, which are especially poignant as it was written for his grandmother who had just passed away. \nFrom here we once again lift our spirits through the beauty and wonder of Ravel’s String Quartet arranged for string orchestra – a powerful way to end the performance. \nThis program’s pieces are all written in honour of people who have been an inspiration to these composers… a legacy we hope we can help continue. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nDates & Times\n\nThursday 06 March 2025 – 7:30pm\nSunday 09 March 2025 – 2:30pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Mostly Mozart – Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Beloved works from Mozart and Schumann.\nThe Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) is dedicated to training exceptional young musicians\, creating alumni that work around the world \nAnthony Marwood performs with and directs musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) in a program of revered Mozart and enchanting Schumann as part of our Mostly Mozart series. \nJupiter is arguably Mozart’s most revered symphony and is often used as the example when describing the heights his compositional skills reached. The final movement’s theme epitomizes the divine in Mozart’s sounding output\, an embryo which eventually grows a sublime bliss. \nSchumann was another kind of talent\, a later bloomer compared to Mozart\, but definitely someone who could understand and feel Mozart’s talent. A testimony of his reverence for Mozart was shown as the musical journey Schumann started\, Neue Zeitschrift für Musik\, was launched with a Mozart biography as its front page item. \nMorning tea returns to Mostly Mozart in 2023. Join us for coffee plus sweet and savory treats from 10am in the ground floor foyer. \n\nThursday 16 November 2023 11am;   MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall  Duration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $49 ($42 Concession) \nExperience this concert online with Australian Digital Concert Hall Click here for live stream tickets

SUMMARY:Melbourne Youth Orchestra: Waterfront Rhapsody
DESCRIPTION:Three great composers span the turbulent 20th Century with sumptuous\, saxophone-infused\, musical energy.\nRhapsody in Blue was something entirely new – neither jazz nor symphony\, neither improvisation nor concerto – and with it\, composer George Gershwin opened the door on a stylistic collaboration which continues to this day\, almost 100 years later. Coming after the brooding power of Bernstein’s On the Waterfront\, Rhapsody will take us back to the escapist days of post WWI America. \nSymphonic Dances by the arch Romantic\, Rachmaninoff\, then jumps forward to pre-WW2 New York in music featuring the most American of musical sonorities\, and highly unusual in an orchestral setting\, the saxophone. Brilliant young pianist\, Reuben Johnson\, stars in this exuberant concert which draws MYO’s 2023 season to a close. \n\nSunday 5 November 2023 5.30pm;  MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $40 ($30 Concession); Student $20

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Prodigies
DESCRIPTION:MSO Concertmaster Dale Barltrop and Melbourne teenage legend Christian Li team up for this program celebrating prodigious musical talent.\nThe youngest ever recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for music\, American composer Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte for string orchestra curiously peers at tried-and-true classical forms through a contemporary lens. The result? Lyrical and playful\, with a touch of the absurd. \nIn a masterful display of virtuosity and musical maturity well beyond his years\, Mozart wrote his Violin Concerto No.3 while still a teenager at just 19. In a pairing of prodigious minds\, thrilling ARIA-nominated Australian violinist Christian Li (he’s still younger than Mozart was) performs this divine concerto. \nWhile Mendelssohn’s official First Symphony was written when he was 15\, he had in fact written thirteen already by the time he was 14\, which are not counted in the official numbering system. This Symphony announced Mendelssohn as a serious compositional voice in Europe. With its explosive opening and lyrical melodies\, it serves as a musical embodiment of the eagerness and energy of youth. \nPre-Concert Talk: Please join Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for a pre-concert talk in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall from 6.45pm – 7.10pm.\n\nSaturday 2 September 2023 7.30pm; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 40 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $105 ($100 Concession); A reserve $87 ($82 Concession); B reserve $65 ($60 Concession)\nC reserve $55 ($50 Concession) CURRENTLY SOLD OUT

SUMMARY:Musica Viva: Among the Birds and the Trees
DESCRIPTION:A riveting collection of ensemble and solo works\, Adam Walker\, Timothy Ridout\, and Anneleen Lenaerts present an exquisite blend of flute\, viola\, and har\nSometimes a concert can be like a walk through a beautiful garden\, with gorgeous blooms\, intriguingly patterned ferns\, and now and then a dramatic grass tree shooting skywards. The rather unusual line-up of instruments for this program offers just such an experience for the listener: a world of glowing sounds\, with something entrancing around every corner of a gently twisting path. \nCreating this world are three of classical music’s acknowledged leaders. Adam Walker was appointed Principal Flute of the London Symphony Orchestra at 21; Anneleen Lenaerts became Solo Harp of the Vienna Philharmonic at 23; Timothy Ridout\, youngest of the three\, is that rare creature: a solo violist. \nThis particularly mellow combination of instruments was the brainchild of Debussy\, featuring in one of his very last pieces\, the cornerstone of this concert. Planted around it are the meditative beauty of Takemitsu\, the intensity of Soviet-era Gubaidulina\, the joyous vigour of George Benjamin\, and a choice selection of other musical blooms. \n\nSaturday 29 April & Tuesday 9 May 2023 7pm; Elisabeth Murdoch Hall; Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $158 ($134 Concession); A reserve $126 ($110 Concession); B reserve $95 ($82 Concession)\nC reserve $66 ($58 Concession)
