SUMMARY:Xavier de Maistre + Affinity Quartet
DESCRIPTION:‘Xavier de Maistre is a virtuoso of the highest order’ – Gramophone \nOne of today’s leading harpists\, Xavier de Maistre is renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to classical music. With a fierce dedication to his instrument\, critics have lauded Xavier de Maistre as ‘a virtuoso of the highest order\, profoundly musical and capable of realising a remarkable range of nuance’ (Gramophone). Born in Toulon\, Xavier studied the harp with Vassilia Briano at his local conservatoire\, before perfecting his technique to then become the first French musician to be admitted at the Wiener Philharmoniker. Collaborating with revered conductors like Sir André Previn and Sir Simon Rattle\, he has graced prestigious orchestras worldwide\, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra\, Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg\, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Having released a series of acclaimed albums\, including Nuit d’Etoiles dedicated to Debussy\, Xavier’s innovative approach makes him a true luminary in the field. \nIn an exclusive Australian recital\, witness Xavier challenge traditional harp music through daring commissions and reimagined instrumental classics. From the rippling arpeggios and intricate harmonies of Debussy’s beloved ‘Two Arabesques\, L.66’\, to Henriette Renié’s enchanting Romantic masterpiece Legende d’après les Elfes\, don’t miss this awe-inspiring performance marking the first time a harp has been featured as a solo instrument in the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall.\nPost-Concert Talk \nFollowing this extraordinary performance\, Xavier de Maistre joins Melbourne Recital Centre’s Director of Programming\, Marshall McGuire\, in the ground floor foyer for a 20-minute discussion about his artistry\, career\, and more. Take a seat and enjoy this perfect conclusion to your musical experience. \nMonday 8 July 2024 7.30pm; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall\nDuration: 2 hours 15 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nTickets: Premium $115; A reserve $102 ($87 Concession); B reserve $87 ($67 Concession); C reserve $67

SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia – Kirill Gerstein
DESCRIPTION:The Art of the Impossible.\nKirill Gerstein is a showman\, philosopher\, and poet of the piano. Since then he has carved out a formidable reputation as a fearless artist who makes the impossible sound easy. \nFor his Melbourne concerts\, he is scaling new heights of virtuosity: Liszt’s power Polonaise in E and Schumann’s Viennese romp\, Carnival of Vienna\, and the wildly difficult\, wildly entertaining transcriptions of eccentric piano nerd\, Leopold Godowsky. In the same program\, he dives deep into the profundity of Chopin’s Polonaise Fantasie and gives the world premiere of Transcendental Etude\, a new commission from Australian Liza Lim. \n‘A peerless performer\, with so much to express’ – Guardian  \n‘uncanny delicacy in one episode and gnashing power the next’ – The New York Times \n\nTuesday 11 June 2024 7pm;   MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $141 ($128 Concession); A reserve $115 ($102 Concession); B reserve $87 ($76 Concession)\nC reserve $62 ($55 Concession); Under 40 $40

SUMMARY:Mostly Mozart – Glories of the Clarinet
DESCRIPTION:With technical brilliance and delicate harmonies\, this hour-long performance showcases the glory that is the clarinet.\nMusicians from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM)\, alongside Finnish director/clarinetist Christoffer Sundqvist\, present two of the earliest works in the modern clarinet canon. \nConsidered one of the leading clarinetists of his generation\, Christoffer has held the position of Principal Clarinet with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra since 2005 and performs regularly with orchestras throughout Europe. With his ‘outstanding soloist’ (International Record Review) credentials\, Christoffer directs ANAM Musicians through Bernhard Henrik Crusell’s Clarinet Concerto No.2 – the first of two works in this program of passion and virtuosity. Considered a clarinet celebrity in his day\, Crusell’s deep understanding of the instrument’s capabilities is illustrated through the haunting beauty and rich tapestry of his often-forgotten concerto. \nIn a seamless blending of soloist and strings with unparalleled musical elegance\, Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet is often considered the jewel in the composer’s late Chamber Music crown. As the intimate dialogue between clarinet and string quartet begins to unfold\, so too do the intricacies and tenderness of Mozart’s signature compositional style. \nMorning Tea\nJoin us for coffee plus sweet and savory treats from 10am in the ground floor foyer. \n\nMonday 20 May 2024 11am;   Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $49 ($42 Concession)

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra – Marvellous Mozart
DESCRIPTION:ANAM’s Artistic Director Paavali Jumppanen leads the MSO from the piano for this vivid insight into Mozart’s brilliance.\nGiven his reputation as a larger-than-life trickster\, it’s little surprise that Mozart’s capacity for crafting characters from sound is unparalleled. ANAM’s Artistic Director Paavali Jumppanen leads the MSO from the piano for this vivid insight into Mozart’s brilliance. \nMozart’s Concert-Rondo provides a charming opener to set the stage for the two works to come. Mozart originally composed this set of variations for Piano and Orchestra as an alternate finale for his Piano Concerto No.5. \nBoth Piano Concertos No.23 and No.24 were composed in 1786 while Mozart was immersed in writing his operatic comedy The Marriage of Figaro\, and both are infused with a sense of drama. The 23rd evokes thematic material from Figaro\, tempering its bustling\, playful energy with almost unbearable longing. \nPiano Concerto No.24 takes us to another realm entirely. Out of a dark\, mystical opening emerges a tender and vulnerable piano solo – our characters are set – and a raging battle between ruthless power and quiet honesty ensues. While written years before his opera The Magic Flute\, the counterpoint of unbridled fury and grounded simplicity in this concerto feels like a premonition of his famous Queen of the Night aria. \nPre-Concert Talk\nPlease join Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for a pre-concert talk in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall from 6.45pm – 7.05pm. \n\nThursday 7 March 2024 7.30pm;  MRC\,  Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 45 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $107 ($102 Concession); A reserve $93 ($88 Concession); B reserve $77 ($72 Concession)\nC reserve $62 ($57 Concession)

SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia – Long Lost Loves (and Grey Suede Gloves)
DESCRIPTION:A picture paints a thousand words\, but music makes you feel…\nJoin mezzo-soprano Anna Dowsley and pianist Michael Curtain for an evening of storytelling over the piano\, inspired by the work of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer William Bolcom\, devised by Paul Kildea and Ian Dickson\, and written and directed by Constantine Costi. \nWilliam Bolcom\, who just celebrated his 85th birthday\, occupies a unique place in the repertoire. Not quite art song\, not quite cabaret\, his settings of Arnold Weinstein’s deliciously dry lyrics continue a grand tradition stretching from Schubert to Sondheim of making words dance\, fly\, and sing. \nA poignant meditation on life\, love and living in the moment. \n\nTuesday 5 March 2024 7pm;   MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 10 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $141 ($128 Concession); A reserve $115 ($102 Concession); B reserve $87 ($76 Concession)\nC reserve $62 ($55 Concession); Under 40: $40

SUMMARY:Musica Viva: Vision String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:An Australian debut for Vision String Quartet – a crack ensemble from Berlin that performs from memory\, offering a deeper\, more immersive experience for audiences.\nThe conductor Jeffrey Tate once described the string quartet as ‘the most perfect expression of human behaviour’. Composers from Haydn to Adès have revelled in this most intimate and virtuosic of musical forms\, awed by the sight of four musicians moving across a tightrope at speed. \nThe four young musicians that make up the Vision String Quartet add one extra element to this dextrous feat: they perform everything from memory. Repertory that might be familiar – Bartók’s astonishing Quartet No.4\, say\, or Dvořák’s Quartet No.13 – is utterly transformed. \nThis prizewinning Berlin-based quartet – praised as ‘amazingly vivacious\, vivid and electrifying … completely fearless’ by Der Tagesspiegel – has gathered fans aplenty across Europe since forming in 2012\, and here makes its thrilling Australian debut. \n\nSaturday 23 September & Tuesday 10 October 2023 7pm;     MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $158 ($134 Concession); A reserve $126 ($110 Concession); B reserve $95 ($82 Concession)\nC reserve $66 ($58 Concession) Under 40 A – C reserve $40

SUMMARY:International Classics: Ilya Gringolts and Aura Go
DESCRIPTION:Watch as the violin virtuoso and piano prodigy join forces.\nFeted for his effortless renditions of the otherwise impossible – from Paganini and Locatelli to Brett Dean – Ilya’s performances and recordings have established him as one of the quintessential violin virtuosi of our time. He has performed as soloist with the world’s leading orchestras\, including a recent collaboration with the Australian Chamber Orchestra. \nPianist Aura Go joins Ilya for the first time since collaborating at the 2016 Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival in Finland. Their shared passion for contemporary music unites them here in the Australian premiere of modern master Wolfgang Rihm’s Phantom und Eskapade\, dedicated to Anne-Sophie Mutter. \nRihm’s invocation of the fantastical alludes to the Schumann sonata and its preoccupations with imagination and myth. The Mozart sonata will unveil the crystalline sounds of Ilya’s Stradivarius violin. \n\nTuesday 19 September 2023 7.30pm     MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 45 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $115; A reserve $99 ($87 Concession); B reserve $85 ($67 Concession); C reserve $64\nD reserve $49

SUMMARY:Australian String Quartet: Utopias
DESCRIPTION:Enter worlds of fantastical visions\, intimate revelation\, and quiet hope for the spirit of mankind.\nVanishing visions of the idyll — a Utopian world of natural splendour\, aquatic and pastoral — are conjured by an intricate and highly original string soundscape from Thomas Adès\, titled Arcadiana. Following this is Mozart’s String Quartet in D minor — intensely personal in its expression\, moments of intimately sublime sorrow give way to bursts of playful radiance\, in only the way Mozart can achieve. \nFinishing this concert is a work that provides an outward lens to the inner world of a composer balancing a delicate and dangerous relationship with political powers. Dedicated to his third wife Irena\, Dimitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet No.9 is defined by its introspective whisperings\, caressing melodies\, and dramatic edge-of-your-seat rhythmic bite. \n\nMonday 15 May 2023 7pm; Elisabeth Murdoch Hall; Duration: 1 hour 40 mins (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $78 ($67 Concession); Student & Under 30: $33

SUMMARY:Melbourne Chamber Orchestra: Woven Threads
DESCRIPTION:For her first orchestral concert as MCO’s artistic director\, Sophie Rowell invites you to revel in the power and possibilities of the string orchestra.\nWe start with the majesty and eloquence of Bach — a single strand of sound that unfolds into a miniature universe. And we end with Sophie as soloist\, in the dazzling youthful Mendelssohn Concerto in D minor. \nIn between\, we weave together through time and place\, tracing rich connections on three continents in four centuries. We thread together Melody Eötvös’ Meraki\, inspired by a Greek word meaning to perform with soul\, creativity and love; a musical firework by American genius Coleridge Perkinson; a dash of theatrical Mozart; and a love letter to Tchaikovsky. \n\nThursday 9 March 7.30pm & Sunday 12 March 2023 2:30pm; Elisabeth Murdoch Hall;  Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $140 ($125 Concession); A-Reserve $120 ($105 Concession); B-Reserve $95 ($75 Concession)\nC-Reserve $70 ($50 Concession) Under 40; B & C Reserve $40; Student $30 \nAustralian Digital Concert Hall Experience this concert online with Australian Digital Concert Hall. Click here for live stream tickets.

SUMMARY:Australian Brandenburg Orchestra: Spanish Steps
DESCRIPTION:Iconic staircase of destiny and dreams.\nFew places in the world express inspiration and romance the way the Spanish Steps in Rome do\, for centuries a meeting place for painters\, musicians\, poets and lovers. \nThe world’s most famous staircase\, at the base of the Piazza di Spagna in this spectacular concert starring the leading Canadian-American cellist Elinor Frey in her Australian debut. Awarded Quebec’s Opus Prize for ‘Performer of the Year’ in 2021\, Elinor reveals the rich and wondrous sounds of the Baroque cello in rarely performed works by Boccherini and Sammartini. \nThe Italian-born Boccherini’s deep affinity with Spain is vividly alive in his music – the bustle\, distant lulls and night noises of Madrid. Musical connections symbolised by the sweep of the Roman Baroque style Spanish Steps linking the Piazza di Spagna (the Spanish Embassy – the oldest in the world) with the Chiesa di Trinità dei Monti\, one of Rome’s most popular tourist destinations. \nThursday 2\, 7pm; Saturday 4\, 7pm; & Sunday 5\, 5pm  March 2023; Elisabeth Murdoch Hall; Duration: 2 hours (incl. interval) \nTickets: Premium $185; A reserve $165 ($109 Concession) *; B reserve $120 ($79 Concession)\nC reserve $90 ($59 Concession); D reserve $60; E reserve $30
