SUMMARY:Australian String Quartet – Aurora
DESCRIPTION:A sound-world shimmering with brilliance.\nWith a reputation as the ‘father of the string quartet’\, Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet in D\, Op.76 No.5 opens this concert. Composed in 1797\, it reflects the composer at the height of his powers in the genre. The second movement is of a particularly contemplative\, otherworldly quality and a defining feature of this quartet in contrast to the upbeat nature of the surrounding three movements\, including a thrillingly bright finale. \nFinnish composer Olli Mustonen’s String Quartet No.1\, completed in 2016\, symbolises — as the composer himself says — a journey from darkness to light. It balances fervent rhythms and hymnal melodies with intertwining psychological and physical elements through the music’s textures and moods\, which are said to evoke travel into fantasy worlds. \nFinishing this concert is Edvard Grieg’s String Quartet No.1 in G minor\, composed in 1877 — a Norwegian gem fusing Romantic melodies and folk influences. Its four movements are marked by emotional depth and nationalistic flair\, and a captivating originality that makes it a celebrated work in Grieg’s output. \n\nMonday 18 November 2024 7pm \n\nElisabeth Murdoch Hall\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $78 ($67 Concession); 35 & Under $35; Student $15

SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble – Concertante
DESCRIPTION:Chopin’s raw and reveling piano concerto.\nFrédéric Chopin once wrote: ‘Sometimes I can only groan\, suffer\, and pour out my despair at the piano!’ A great introvert\, Chopin preferred the dark and smoky salons to the grand concert halls of Paris\, and would often perform his own spectacular concertos in the private apartments of friends and patrons accompanied by string ensembles. In this spirit\, Chopin’s first Piano Concerto is performed in a raw and powerful arrangement for just ten musicians. \nAn exciting new voice\, Harry Sdraulig’s name has quickly catapulted into one of the most in-demand Australian composers of his generation\, with commissions from all of Australia’s leading orchestras\, as well as Yo-Yo Ma\, Australian String Quartet\, and Australian Chamber Orchestra. Pushing the Western classical tradition into new directions\, juxtaposes melodic lyricism with intricate rhythmic interplay which draws influences from classical\, jazz\, and popular musical styles. \nA regular on Australian stages as a concert pianist\, Finnish Oli Mustonen is also an accomplished and distinctive composer. Opening with piercing discords and stunted rhythms\, the Nonet II moves through moments of galloping Beethovenian rhythms\, tranquil ostinati\, and Russian flair\, before finally exploding into a heart-racing finale described by the composer as ‘instrumental ecstasy’. \n\nTuesday 1 October 2024 7pm \n\nElisabeth Murdoch Hall\n\nDuration: 1 hour 30 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: A reserve $79 ($69 Concession); B reserve $59; C reserve $39 Under 30 $39

DESCRIPTION:U.K. producer Clark and acclaimed choreographer Melanie Lane present an evocative contemporary dance performance.\nWith the desperate struggle to evolve comes the inevitability of collapse. In order to create\, we must also destroy. \nU.K. electronic music producer Clark and award-winning choreographer Melanie Lane present MOUNTAIN\, an evocative contemporary dance performance with breathtaking costumes by designer Akira Isogawa. \nInhabiting a space between the mythic and manmade worlds\, MOUNTAIN is an urgent exploration of tension between the transcendence of conquering unreachable peaks and the terror of descent. Echoing the human struggle to move ‘upwards\,’ this sonic and choreographic motion moves within these mysterious landscapes. \nSet to a live score of electronics\, strings\, and piano composed and performed by Clark\, alongside the Canberra Symphony Orchestra Chamber Ensemble\, dancers Tyrel Dulvarie\, Sarah Black\, Yolanda Lowatta\, and Max Burgess climb\, collapse\, and take flight. Their movements are carried by music that both threatens and promises a realm beyond our own. \nSaturday 24 August 2024 7.30pm\nDuration: 1 hour (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nMelbourne Recital Centre\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nTICKETS: A reserve $55; B reserve $45\nMobtix / BLAKTIX: $35

SUMMARY:Australian National Academy of Music: Mostly Mozart - Magnificent Minor
DESCRIPTION:Two exceptional violinists – ANAM Head of String Chamber Music Sophie Rowell and Polish violinist Jakub Jakowicz – direct ANAM musicians in two works of imperishable beauty. \nBach’s violin concertos are so sublime that they’ve been described as the music angels play in heaven. This one\, for two violins\, with its overlapping\, intertwining dialogue between the two soloists and the ensemble\, is one of the glories of the Baroque. With its combination of rhythmic power and sustained songfulness\, it leaps across the centuries to bring delight to a troubled world. \nMozart’s symphony presents you with rockier emotional terrain. ‘Powerful’ will not do\, nor will ‘dramatic’. Written in a blaze of inspiration in the summer of 1788\, this tempestuous music is somehow uniquely Mozartian in its formal grace and harmonic ingenuity\, but also looks forward to the new worlds of expressive possibility which would be explored by composers in the generations to follow. \nSingle Tickets will be on sale from 8 December. \nJohann Sebastian BACH Concerto for Two Violins in D minor\, BWV1043\nWolfgang Amadeus MOZART Symphony no. 40 in G minor\, K550 \nSophie Rowell (ANAM Head of String Chamber Music) director/violin\nJakub Jakowicz director/violin\nANAM Orchestra \nFriday 9 August 2024 11am Duration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nElisabeth Murdoch Hall\nTICKETS: Standard $49 ($42 Concession)

Born in Toulon\, Xavier studied the harp with Vassilia Briano at his local conservatoire\, before perfecting his technique to then become the first French musician to be admitted at the Wiener Philharmoniker. Collaborating with revered conductors like Sir André Previn and Sir Simon Rattle\, he has graced prestigious orchestras worldwide\, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra\, Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg\, and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Having released a series of acclaimed albums\, including Nuit d’Etoiles dedicated to Debussy\, Xavier’s innovative approach makes him a true luminary in the field. \nIn an exclusive Australian recital\, witness Xavier challenge traditional harp music through daring commissions and reimagined instrumental classics. From the rippling arpeggios and intricate harmonies of Debussy’s beloved ‘Two Arabesques\, L.66’\, to Henriette Renié’s enchanting Romantic masterpiece Legende d’après les Elfes\, don’t miss this awe-inspiring performance marking the first time a harp has been featured as a solo instrument in the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall.\nPost-Concert Talk \nFollowing this extraordinary performance\, Xavier de Maistre joins Melbourne Recital Centre’s Director of Programming\, Marshall McGuire\, in the ground floor foyer for a 20-minute discussion about his artistry\, career\, and more. Take a seat and enjoy this perfect conclusion to your musical experience. \nMonday 8 July 2024 7.30pm; MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall\nDuration: 2 hours 15 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nTickets: Premium $115; A reserve $102 ($87 Concession); B reserve $87 ($67 Concession); C reserve $67

In the same program\, he dives deep into the profundity of Chopin’s Polonaise Fantasie and gives the world premiere of Transcendental Etude\, a new commission from Australian Liza Lim. \n‘A peerless performer\, with so much to express’ – Guardian  \n‘uncanny delicacy in one episode and gnashing power the next’ – The New York Times \n\nTuesday 11 June 2024 7pm;   MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $141 ($128 Concession); A reserve $115 ($102 Concession); B reserve $87 ($76 Concession)\nC reserve $62 ($55 Concession); Under 40 $40

SUMMARY:Mostly Mozart – Glories of the Clarinet
DESCRIPTION:With technical brilliance and delicate harmonies\, this hour-long performance showcases the glory that is the clarinet.\nMusicians from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM)\, alongside Finnish director/clarinetist Christoffer Sundqvist\, present two of the earliest works in the modern clarinet canon. \nConsidered one of the leading clarinetists of his generation\, Christoffer has held the position of Principal Clarinet with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra since 2005 and performs regularly with orchestras throughout Europe. With his ‘outstanding soloist’ (International Record Review) credentials\, Christoffer directs ANAM Musicians through Bernhard Henrik Crusell’s Clarinet Concerto No.2 – the first of two works in this program of passion and virtuosity. Considered a clarinet celebrity in his day\, Crusell’s deep understanding of the instrument’s capabilities is illustrated through the haunting beauty and rich tapestry of his often-forgotten concerto. \nIn a seamless blending of soloist and strings with unparalleled musical elegance\, Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet is often considered the jewel in the composer’s late Chamber Music crown. As the intimate dialogue between clarinet and string quartet begins to unfold\, so too do the intricacies and tenderness of Mozart’s signature compositional style. \nMorning Tea\nJoin us for coffee plus sweet and savory treats from 10am in the ground floor foyer. \n\nMonday 20 May 2024 11am;   Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $49 ($42 Concession)

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra – Marvellous Mozart
DESCRIPTION:ANAM’s Artistic Director Paavali Jumppanen leads the MSO from the piano for this vivid insight into Mozart’s brilliance.\nGiven his reputation as a larger-than-life trickster\, it’s little surprise that Mozart’s capacity for crafting characters from sound is unparalleled. ANAM’s Artistic Director Paavali Jumppanen leads the MSO from the piano for this vivid insight into Mozart’s brilliance. \nMozart’s Concert-Rondo provides a charming opener to set the stage for the two works to come. Mozart originally composed this set of variations for Piano and Orchestra as an alternate finale for his Piano Concerto No.5. \nBoth Piano Concertos No.23 and No.24 were composed in 1786 while Mozart was immersed in writing his operatic comedy The Marriage of Figaro\, and both are infused with a sense of drama. The 23rd evokes thematic material from Figaro\, tempering its bustling\, playful energy with almost unbearable longing. \nPiano Concerto No.24 takes us to another realm entirely. Out of a dark\, mystical opening emerges a tender and vulnerable piano solo – our characters are set – and a raging battle between ruthless power and quiet honesty ensues. While written years before his opera The Magic Flute\, the counterpoint of unbridled fury and grounded simplicity in this concerto feels like a premonition of his famous Queen of the Night aria. \nPre-Concert Talk\nPlease join Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for a pre-concert talk in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall from 6.45pm – 7.05pm. \n\nThursday 7 March 2024 7.30pm;  MRC\,  Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 45 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $107 ($102 Concession); A reserve $93 ($88 Concession); B reserve $77 ($72 Concession)\nC reserve $62 ($57 Concession)

SUMMARY:Musica Viva: Vision String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:An Australian debut for Vision String Quartet – a crack ensemble from Berlin that performs from memory\, offering a deeper\, more immersive experience for audiences.\nThe conductor Jeffrey Tate once described the string quartet as ‘the most perfect expression of human behaviour’. Composers from Haydn to Adès have revelled in this most intimate and virtuosic of musical forms\, awed by the sight of four musicians moving across a tightrope at speed. \nThe four young musicians that make up the Vision String Quartet add one extra element to this dextrous feat: they perform everything from memory. Repertory that might be familiar – Bartók’s astonishing Quartet No.4\, say\, or Dvořák’s Quartet No.13 – is utterly transformed. \nThis prizewinning Berlin-based quartet – praised as ‘amazingly vivacious\, vivid and electrifying … completely fearless’ by Der Tagesspiegel – has gathered fans aplenty across Europe since forming in 2012\, and here makes its thrilling Australian debut. \n\nSaturday 23 September & Tuesday 10 October 2023 7pm;     MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $158 ($134 Concession); A reserve $126 ($110 Concession); B reserve $95 ($82 Concession)\nC reserve $66 ($58 Concession) Under 40 A – C reserve $40

SUMMARY:International Classics: Ilya Gringolts and Aura Go
DESCRIPTION:Watch as the violin virtuoso and piano prodigy join forces.\nFeted for his effortless renditions of the otherwise impossible – from Paganini and Locatelli to Brett Dean – Ilya’s performances and recordings have established him as one of the quintessential violin virtuosi of our time. He has performed as soloist with the world’s leading orchestras\, including a recent collaboration with the Australian Chamber Orchestra. \nPianist Aura Go joins Ilya for the first time since collaborating at the 2016 Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival in Finland. Their shared passion for contemporary music unites them here in the Australian premiere of modern master Wolfgang Rihm’s Phantom und Eskapade\, dedicated to Anne-Sophie Mutter. \nRihm’s invocation of the fantastical alludes to the Schumann sonata and its preoccupations with imagination and myth. The Mozart sonata will unveil the crystalline sounds of Ilya’s Stradivarius violin. \n\nTuesday 19 September 2023 7.30pm     MRC\, Elisabeth Murdoch Hall \nDuration: 1 hour 45 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Premium $115; A reserve $99 ($87 Concession); B reserve $85 ($67 Concession); C reserve $64\nD reserve $49
