SUMMARY:The Australian String Quartet: Convergence
DESCRIPTION:A dramatic rollercoaster of virtuosity and emotion converges in three wildly contrasting works by Stanhope\, Britten and Schubert.\nSince the release of their recorded trilogy of Paul Stanhope’s quartets\, the ASQ has proudly championed this beloved Australian composer\, whose first string quartet\, Elegies and Dances\, bristles with rhythmic vitality. Benjamin Britten’s String Quartet No.2\, a deeply moving tribute to the great English composer Henry Purcell\, is the musical equivalent of a towering architectural marvel\, weaving four distinct voices in stark contrast and breathtaking unity. \nThe program culminates with Schubert’s enduringly popular Death and the Maiden quartet\, a window into the tortured soul of a musical giant at the height of his powers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAustralian String Quartet: Dale Barltrop Violin; Francesca Hiew Violin\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Cartlidge Viola; Michael Dahlenburg Cello \nPaul Stanhope String Quartet No.1\, Elegies & Dances \nBenjamin Britten  String Quartet No.2 in C\, Op.36 \nFranz Schubert String Quartet No.14 in D minor\, Death and the Maiden \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMonday 27 October 2025 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Australian Brandenburg Orchestra: Water Music
DESCRIPTION:Precious. Life-giving. Pure.\nIn a profound celebration of water\, the Brandenburg explores an homage to water’s spiritual and cultural significance as the foundation of our existence and survival: the essential element of life. \nA powerful and resonant tribute from seasoned collaborators. Rrawun Maymuru\, an ocean and waterway custodian hailing from East Arnhem Land debuting an original composition created with Nick Wales\, a classically trained contemporary composer. Sung in the language of the Yolngu people\, this heartfelt ode to water promises to echo deep within the soul of every listener. \nThe homage continues with the Brandenburg’s vibrant rendition of Handel’s complete Water Music masterpiece brought to life with the Orchestra’s signature celebratory exuberance. \nThis performance serves as an experiential meditation on our custodial duty to our world. Through music and song\, the Brandenburg explores the crucial themes of water’s essence\, and our collective responsibility to cherish\, conserve and protect it. \nIn this concert experience\, water is not only celebrated but revered—a reminder of water as the constant\, vital thread flowing through our past\, our present\, and our future. \nJubilant\, deeply moving and profound. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 09 October 2025 – 7:00pm\nSaturday 11 October 2025 – 7:00pm\nSunday 12 October 2025 – 5:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour 45 mins (incl. interval). SUMMARY:The Tallis Scholars - Concert One
DESCRIPTION:Mastery of both Renaissance and contemporary sacred music.\nWith its cathedral of sound\, the intricate harmonies of Nicholas Gombert’s eight-part Credo opens this first of two performances\, marking the Scholars first Melbourne appearance in three years. \nThe delicate beauty of Thomas Crecquillon’s Andreas Christi famulus transports listeners to the courts of 16th-century Europe\, before the thrilling contrast of Nico Muhly’s A Glorious Creature and the vocal tapestry of Jacobus Clemens’ Ego flos campi perfectly demonstrates The Tallis Scholars’ reputation for breathing new life into the traditions of choral music. \nWith profound emotional depth\, Victoria’s monumental Requiem marks the crescendo of this afternoon’s performance. Through soaring song lines and moments of hushed intensity\, The Tallis Scholars guide this spiritual journey with pure\, unparalleled vocal expression. \nNicolas Gombert Credo à 8 \nThomas Crecquillon Andreas Christi famulus \nNico Muhly A Glorious Creature \nJacob Clemens non Papa Ego flos campi \nTomás Luis de Victoria Requiem Mass 1605 \nClick here to read the program notes. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday 05 October 2025 – 5:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour 30 mins (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Melbourne Youth Orchestras: Reformation\, Romance & Rebellion
DESCRIPTION:Music of romance\, power\, and joy.\nShostakovich’s Fifth Symphony emerged as a masterful response to Stalin’s criticism of his earlier works. Whether interpreted as a public statement or subtle rebellion\, the symphony captures the turbulence\, despair\, and triumph of its time with volcanic intensity. \nKorngold\, a celebrated Jewish émigré\, found safety and success in Hollywood\, where his music embodied the emotional exuberance of early cinema. Gifted with sparkling melodies\, lush harmonies\, and imaginative orchestration\, Korngold brought a joyous spirit to his compositions. His Violin Concerto\, featuring brilliant violinist Louise Turnbull\, remains a beloved masterpiece. \nMelbourne composer Miriama Young’s Daughters of Elysium also draws from the past\, weaving Bach’s influences into her imaginative soundscape. The program opens with Mendelssohn’s Symphony No.5\, a spiritual declaration reaching an awe-inspiring climax. \nThe talented young musicians of Melbourne Youth Orchestra are thrilled to share this transformative celebration of passion\, creativity\, and rebirth. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLouise Turnbull violin\nBrett Kelly conductor\nMelbourne Youth Orchestra  \nFelix Mendelssohn Symphony No.5 'Reformation' Finale\n\nMiriama Young Daughters of Elysium (2024)\n \nErich Wolfgang Korngold Violin Concerto\n\nDmitri Shostakovich Symphony No.5\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday 30 March 2025 – 2:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Hoang Pham in Recital
DESCRIPTION:Hoang Pham performs three masterpieces for solo piano by Beethoven and Liszt.\nBeethoven wrote 32 piano sonatas and both the Pathétique and Moonlight remain his most popular of the series. Both of these sonatas were written around the turn of the 19th century and were revolutionary\, offering a glimpse into the more emotional and dramatic Romantic period. \nLiszt’s piano transcription of Wagner’s Overture to Tannäuser is one of over fifty operatic paraphrases that Liszt composed in his lifetime. Many of the famous French\, Italian and German operas of the 19th century provided a creative canvas for Liszt’s reflections at the piano. His Tannhäuser transcription provides a towering virtuoso conclusion to this recital. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHoang Pham piano \nLudwig van Beethoven Sonata in C minor\, Op.13 Pathétique; Sonata in C sharp minor\, Op.27\, No.2 Moonlight \nRichard Wagner / Franz Liszt Overture to Tannhäuser \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday 29 March 2025\, 6:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval). SUMMARY:Australian String Quartet – Aurora
DESCRIPTION:A sound-world shimmering with brilliance.\nWith a reputation as the ‘father of the string quartet’\, Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet in D\, Op.76 No.5 opens this concert. Composed in 1797\, it reflects the composer at the height of his powers in the genre. The second movement is of a particularly contemplative\, otherworldly quality and a defining feature of this quartet in contrast to the upbeat nature of the surrounding three movements\, including a thrillingly bright finale. \nFinnish composer Olli Mustonen’s String Quartet No.1\, completed in 2016\, symbolises — as the composer himself says — a journey from darkness to light. It balances fervent rhythms and hymnal melodies with intertwining psychological and physical elements through the music’s textures and moods\, which are said to evoke travel into fantasy worlds. \nFinishing this concert is Edvard Grieg’s String Quartet No.1 in G minor\, composed in 1877 — a Norwegian gem fusing Romantic melodies and folk influences. Its four movements are marked by emotional depth and nationalistic flair\, and a captivating originality that makes it a celebrated work in Grieg’s output. \n\nMonday 18 November 2024 7pm \n\nElisabeth Murdoch Hall\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: Standard $78 ($67 Concession); 35 & Under $35; Student $15

SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble – Concertante
DESCRIPTION:Chopin’s raw and reveling piano concerto.\nFrédéric Chopin once wrote: ‘Sometimes I can only groan\, suffer\, and pour out my despair at the piano!’ A great introvert\, Chopin preferred the dark and smoky salons to the grand concert halls of Paris\, and would often perform his own spectacular concertos in the private apartments of friends and patrons accompanied by string ensembles. In this spirit\, Chopin’s first Piano Concerto is performed in a raw and powerful arrangement for just ten musicians. \nAn exciting new voice\, Harry Sdraulig’s name has quickly catapulted into one of the most in-demand Australian composers of his generation\, with commissions from all of Australia’s leading orchestras\, as well as Yo-Yo Ma\, Australian String Quartet\, and Australian Chamber Orchestra. Pushing the Western classical tradition into new directions\, juxtaposes melodic lyricism with intricate rhythmic interplay which draws influences from classical\, jazz\, and popular musical styles. \nA regular on Australian stages as a concert pianist\, Finnish Oli Mustonen is also an accomplished and distinctive composer. Opening with piercing discords and stunted rhythms\, the Nonet II moves through moments of galloping Beethovenian rhythms\, tranquil ostinati\, and Russian flair\, before finally exploding into a heart-racing finale described by the composer as ‘instrumental ecstasy’. \n\nTuesday 1 October 2024 7pm \n\nElisabeth Murdoch Hall\n\nDuration: 1 hour 30 mins (incl. interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS: A reserve $79 ($69 Concession); B reserve $59; C reserve $39 Under 30 $39

SUMMARY:Australian National Academy of Music: Mostly Mozart - Magnificent Minor
DESCRIPTION:Two exceptional violinists – ANAM Head of String Chamber Music Sophie Rowell and Polish violinist Jakub Jakowicz – direct ANAM musicians in two works of imperishable beauty. \nBach’s violin concertos are so sublime that they’ve been described as the music angels play in heaven. This one\, for two violins\, with its overlapping\, intertwining dialogue between the two soloists and the ensemble\, is one of the glories of the Baroque. With its combination of rhythmic power and sustained songfulness\, it leaps across the centuries to bring delight to a troubled world. \nMozart’s symphony presents you with rockier emotional terrain. ‘Powerful’ will not do\, nor will ‘dramatic’. Written in a blaze of inspiration in the summer of 1788\, this tempestuous music is somehow uniquely Mozartian in its formal grace and harmonic ingenuity\, but also looks forward to the new worlds of expressive possibility which would be explored by composers in the generations to follow. \nSingle Tickets will be on sale from 8 December. \nJohann Sebastian BACH Concerto for Two Violins in D minor\, BWV1043\nWolfgang Amadeus MOZART Symphony no. 40 in G minor\, K550 \nSophie Rowell (ANAM Head of String Chamber Music) director/violin\nJakub Jakowicz director/violin\nANAM Orchestra \nFriday 9 August 2024 11am Duration: 1 hour 15 mins (no interval) Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nElisabeth Murdoch Hall\nTICKETS: Standard $49 ($42 Concession)
