SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra: Schubert’s Fantasy & Octet
DESCRIPTION:Richard Tognetti leads an Australian Chamber Orchestra octet to celebrate the greatest of musical poets.\nSchubert composed like an oil painter\, drawing from a rich palette of melodic and harmonic colours. With a divine lyricism at its heart\, his music is imbued with an intimacy and intensity that taps into the full range of human emotion. \nRichard Tognetti’s affinity for Schubert is evident in every note he plays. Here\, he directs an ACO ensemble featuring a handpicked selection of Australia’s top wind players in two exquisite works that showcase Schubert as a master of chamber music. \nSchubert wrote his Octet to emulate his hero Beethoven’s groundbreaking septet – adding an extra violin and revelling in the textural possibilities of the winds and strings together. \nThe result offers the drama of a big orchestra with the agility of a small ensemble. The Octet is six movements of unbridled joy\, studded with moments of darkness and poignancy that make its resolution even more satisfying. \nSchubert’s beloved Fantasy in C for violin and piano was inspired by Paganini’s brilliance and is arranged by Tognetti for the magic of the ACO octet. It is a shimmering and compelling counterpart that completes this heart-warming\, life-affirming concert experience. \n\nSaturday 23 May 2026 – 7:30pm\nMonday 25 May 2026 – 7:30pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Gran Partita
DESCRIPTION:Fall in love with the most lyrical family in the orchestra.\nThe MSO woodwind players will soar through melodies from Strauss and Mozart\, bringing you up close and personal to the sounds of these mellow and expressive instruments. MSO Principal Oboe Johannes Grosso and Principal Clarinet David Thomas will direct this concert collaboratively. They’ll also perform alongside their fellow wind and horn specialists\, placing the best of chamber music in the best of hands. \nAlready one of Mozart’s most popular pieces\, Gran Partita was composed in the 1780s but enjoyed a renewed burst of fame in the 1980s when it featured in the film Amadeus. Richard Strauss modelled his own Wind Sonatina on classic works like this one\, which influenced his new style for a new generation. \nHear both of these intimate pieces performed at Melbourne Recital Centre\, one of the standout chamber music venues of the world. \nWhy not make an occasion of it? Attend the MSO’s choral performance in the same venue\, earlier in the day. It’ll feature Australian composer Dan Walker’s Mass of Deliverance inspired by the music of John Rutter\, which will also grace the sacred-themed program. \nPre-Concert Talk\nJoin the MSO for a pre-concert talk in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall from 5.15pm – 5.35pm. \n\nSunday 17 May 2026 – 6:00pm; Duration: 1 hour 45 mins (incl. interval). Please note\, running times are approximate and subject to change. \nTICKETS: $105 – $20

SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: String Spectacular
DESCRIPTION:Could the waltz from Serenade for Strings be the most charming piece of music ever written?\nDecide for yourself when you hear the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra perform Tchaikovsky’s music at Melbourne Recital Centre. \nThis concert is dedicated entirely to the luscious sounds of the string orchestra. Tchaikovsky’s yearningly romantic music is paired with Mozart’s sprightly Divertimento\, both of which will leave you feeling uplifted. With Grieg’s Holberg Suite\, you’ll be swept into the joyful momentum of Norwegian music inspired by dances. \nBut the standout work on the program comes from our own backyard. Ella Macens is a composer whose music you may have heard broadcast on ABC Classic FM or performed live in concert. The MSO presents her profoundly expressive and emotionally resonant work The Lake. \nFor a program honouring string music through the eras\, there are few better choices than Natalie Chee to take the dual roles of director and violin soloist. \nMelbourne Symphony Orchestra; Natalie Chee director\, violin \nWolfgang Amadeus Mozart  Divertimento K.136 \nEdvard Grieg  Holberg Suite \nElla Macens The Lake \nPyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Serenade for Strings \nPre-Concert Talk\nJoin the MSO for a pre-concert talk in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall from 6.45pm – 7.05pm. \n\nSaturday 16 May 2026 – 7:30pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour 50 mins (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia: Beethoven's Ghost
DESCRIPTION:Serendipitous meeting of musical hearts and minds.\nAustralian pianist and storyteller Aura Go has worked with Finnish/Australian-based cellist Timo-Veikko (Tipi) Valve for many years\, performing nationally and internationally as a duo. She’s also toured extensively with virtuoso Australian violinist Kristian Winther. \nNow Musica Viva Australia presents Aura Go\, Timo-Veikko Valve and Kristian Winther performing all together. \nBeethoven’s Piano Trio in D\, the ‘Ghost’\, and Ravel’s stormy Piano Trio form the dramatic core of Aura\, Kristian and Tipi’s national tour. Alongside these two giants of the repertoire they bring a glowing miniature from Lili Boulanger\, written in the shadow of the First World War\, and a world premiere from Australian composer Melody Eötvös\, commissioned by Musica Viva Australia and written for this exciting new ensemble of local heroes. \n‘From the slow broad opening of the first sonata – like an athlete flexing his muscles – Valve showed why he is so popular… As the sparkling runs of the piano kicked in it was obvious that Go was the perfect partner for these taxing works.’ – Limelight \n‘Kristian Winther’s artistry knew no limit in a remarkable concert with pianist Aura Go.’ – In Daily \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday 12 May 2026 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). SUMMARY:The Spooky Men's Chorale - 25 Years of Pointless Grandeur
DESCRIPTION:‘Stand back and admire the beautifully sung anarchy.’ – Daily Telegraph\nThe Spooky Men’s Chorale is a magnificent\, many-headed beast that has single-handedly turned the world of men’s singing upside down. Bypassing well-trodden avenues\, they carve out new territories of mighty man sounds\, exquisite tenderness\, and charming stupidity to both celebrate masculinity and mock it. \nCelebrating their 25th birthday\, The Spooky Men’s Chorale bring their anarchic approach to vocal music and reflect on what it means to be a man. Highly theatrical\, these ordinary blokes with extraordinary voices veer from surreal to moving to joyous\, in a style which defies genre. \nPraise for The Spooky Men’s Chorale  \n‘Don’t miss an opportunity to see them.’ – Daily Telegraph   \n‘Once seen\, they are never forgotten! In one sitting\, a Chopin piano recital is an exploration of all these styles within Chopin’s unique sound world. SUMMARY:Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: Strauss and Mozart
DESCRIPTION:Live music can enrich us with new emotional experiences. It can also provide a great night out.\nIn both of these spirits\, the MSO presents a mood-lifting concert program. Richard Strauss brings the laughs with Le bourgeois gentilhomme\, a musical comedy about a normal bloke who dreams of joining the upper classes. It’s a bit like My Fair Lady but more satirical. As the character attempts to climb a dazzling social ladder\, Strauss provides a score that recalls music from the Baroque era in which the original story was written. \nThis echoes another piece on the program\, J.S. Bach’s Suite in D. Be sure to listen out for Air in G\, its most famous movement and one that’s bound to tug at your heartstrings. Not only will Jaime Martín lead this concert from the podium\, but he’ll also swap baton for flute when he performs Mozart’s Flute Concerto in G. Be there to see MSO Chief Conductor in a different light as soloist! \nVersatile Concertmaster Natalie Chee will also take a showstopping role in this concert that relies heavily on the expressive foundations of the violin. \nMelbourne Symphony Orchestra\nJaime Martín director / flute\nNatalie Chee violin\n \nJ.S. SUMMARY:Barton & Brodsky
DESCRIPTION:Ancient strings\, living spirit.\nWitness musical history as chamber music masters the Brodsky Quartet meet master yidaki artist William Barton to create a performance that revolutionises the idea of what a string quartet can become. \nIn this profound musical dialogue between traditions\, baroque precision meets ancient breath; European chamber music encounters First Nations wisdom. \nBarton’s yidaki doesn’t merely accompany the Brodsky’s pristine strings\, it converses with them\, in sonic dialogue spanning millennia. From Henry Purcell’s baroque geometries to Peter Sculthorpe’s dreamtime landscapes. From Leoš Janáček’s intimate confessions to new works born from Australia’s burning heart\, this program traces an extraordinary arc through time and culture. \nMusic’s deepest truths emerge when profound traditions meet as equals. Together\, the Brodsky Quartet and William Barton conjure moments of startling beauty where the ancient breath of the yidaki weaves through Stravinsky’s modernist fragments\, and where Andrew Ford’s Eden Ablaze emerges like smoke from a burning continent. \nWith the Brodsky’s 50-year legacy and legendary precision and Barton’s pioneering talents\, this is your chance to experience Australia’s musical soul in conversation and self-reflection\, from past to present. \nThis concert is supported by the British Council. \nBrodsky Quartet: Krysia Osostowicz violin; Ian Belton violin; Paul Cassidy viola; Jacqueline Thomas cello \nWilliam Barton didgeridoo \nHenry Purcell Fantasia in D minor\, Z.739 \nPeter Sculthorpe String Quartet No.11\, Jabiru Dreaming \nRobert Davidson Minjerribah \nLeoš Janáček String Quartet No.1\, The Kreutzer Sonata \nIgor Stravinsky Three Pieces for String Quartet – 1st Mov. ‘Dance’ \nAndrew Ford String Quartet No.7\, Eden Ablaze \nSalina Fisher Tōrino \nTraditional She moved through the fair \nWilliam Barton Square Circles Beneath the Red Desert Sand \nWednesday 25 February 2026 – 7:30pm \nDuration: 2 hours 30 mins (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody
DESCRIPTION:A musical revelation starring pianist Dejan Lazić\, with a world premiere from John Luther Adams.\nWhen Rachmaninoff first performed his Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini\, it had the audience in raptures. The extraordinary pianist had written a showstopper\, and audiences have loved its lush\, romantic melodies for nearly 100 years. Now\, the ever- adventurous pianist Dejan Lazić returns to the Australian Chamber Orchestra to play it\, in a new arrangement for piano and strings. \nIn this joyful season opener directed by Richard Tognetti and featuring the singular talents of Lazić as soloist\, the Australian Chamber Orchestra explores the power of music to take us to the edge of what is known… and beyond. Join the Australian Chamber Orchestra to explore where the lines between earth\, sea and sky merge. There\, possibility is infinite. \nJohn Luther Adams is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer whose music is a profound response to the natural world. In the world premiere of his expansive Horizon\, you’ll explore the extremes of the Australian landscape. Born of a residency in Australia\, Adams plays with space\, sound and texture to immerse you in this special place. \nRaminta Šerkšnytė’s euphoric De Profundis plays with high and low extremes\, in a piece full of energy and drama. Stravinsky’s balletic Concerto in D is sometimes ominous\, sometimes graceful\, and always impressive. \nLazić describes playing with the Australian Chamber Orchestra as “coming home”. This latest collaboration between virtuosos – and old friends – is not to be missed. \nJohn Luther Adams Horizon * (World Premiere) \nIgor Stravinsky Concerto in D ‘Basle’ \nRaminta Šerkšnytė De Profundis (Australian Premiere) \nSergei Rachmaninoff (arr. piano\, percussion and strings) Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini\, Op.43 \n*Commissioned by the Australian Chamber Orchestra \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday 07 February 2026 – 7:30pm\nMonday 09 February 2026 – 7:30pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). Bursting with sunlit joy and dancing rhythms\, the opening movement right through to the final notes perfectly showcase why this has long been a fan-favourite work by the Italian composer. \nIn contrast\, the haunting Salve Regina draws listeners into a word of melancholy beauty as interwoven soprano and alto voices float above shimmering strings. Finally\, two of JS Bach’s most deeply personal compositions\, including his Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied with its spectacular eight-part double choir\, round out this radiant program of Baroque masterworks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday 26 November 2025 – 7:30pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). SUMMARY:The Australian String Quartet: Convergence
DESCRIPTION:A dramatic rollercoaster of virtuosity and emotion converges in three wildly contrasting works by Stanhope\, Britten and Schubert.\nSince the release of their recorded trilogy of Paul Stanhope’s quartets\, the ASQ has proudly championed this beloved Australian composer\, whose first string quartet\, Elegies and Dances\, bristles with rhythmic vitality. Benjamin Britten’s String Quartet No.2\, a deeply moving tribute to the great English composer Henry Purcell\, is the musical equivalent of a towering architectural marvel\, weaving four distinct voices in stark contrast and breathtaking unity. \nThe program culminates with Schubert’s enduringly popular Death and the Maiden quartet\, a window into the tortured soul of a musical giant at the height of his powers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAustralian String Quartet: Dale Barltrop Violin; Francesca Hiew Violin\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChris Cartlidge Viola; Michael Dahlenburg Cello \nPaul Stanhope String Quartet No.1\, Elegies & Dances \nBenjamin Britten  String Quartet No.2 in C\, Op.36 \nFranz Schubert String Quartet No.14 in D minor\, Death and the Maiden \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMonday 27 October 2025 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval).
