SUMMARY:Bottesini Magic
DESCRIPTION:Zelman Symphony Concert \nProgram\nTchaikovsky – The Tempest Fantasy Overture\nBottesini – Double Bass Concerto No. 2 in B minor\nBrahms – Symphony No. 2 \nArtists\nPhoebe Russell – Double Bass\nMark Shiell – Conductor \nAbout the Concert\nBottesini was considered the Paganini of the Double Bass\, developing a formidable technique for the instrument and composing numerous solo works. We are thrilled to welcome back the equally virtuosic Phoebe Russell to play his second concerto. In 2010\, Phoebe was Zelman Symphony’s youngest section leader and youngest invited soloist ever. She has since embarked on a stellar career so far culminating in being a member of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra Academy\, and as a frequent casual player with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and numerous other European orchestras – light years from her start in Zelman Symphony! \nThe concert opens with Tchaikovsky’s The Tempest Fantasy Overture which is based on the Shakespearian play\, and closes with Brahms’ Symphony No. 2\, a contemplative and exuberant work which he wrote in less than a year\, a distinct contrast with the 15 years he took to write his first symphony! \nMark Shiell will present a pre-concert talk in the auditorium commencing 7.30pm.

SUMMARY:Scandinavian Masterpieces: Zelman Symphony
DESCRIPTION:Grieg and Sibelius are the two greatest exponents of Scandinavian music\, and we have pleasure in presenting their most popular and well-loved works. \nGrieg’s Peer Gynt Suite and Piano Concerto are both heavily influenced by Norwegian folk songs and dance. We welcome one of Australia’s’ foremost pianists\, Stefan Cassomenos\, who will delight you as his fingers dance across the keyboard in the Piano Concerto. \nABC FM lists Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 in the top 10 of the 100 favourite classical works of all time! This symphony has more of a nationalistic character and will provide a triumphal conclusion to the concert. \nMark Shiell will present a pre-concert talk in the auditorium commencing 7.30pm. \nThe concert will also feature the world premiere of a new work from the Zelman Symphony / Melbourne University Emerging Composer of 2016. \nProgram: \nGrieg – Peer Gynt Suite No. 1\nWorld Premiere of a New Work\nGrieg – Piano Concerto in A minor\nSibelius – Symphony No. 2

SUMMARY:American Story: Zelman Symphony Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:This concert will feature some of the best known American music of the 20th Century from the serious to the whimsical. We will pay homage to some of America’s most iconic composers\, Copland\, Bernstein and Gershwin\, who\, as American music came of age\, were influenced both by the country’s unique history and the infectious popularity of jazz. \nCopland’s Concerto for Clarinet was composed for Benny Goodman who gave the premiere in 1950 – what a star to be following! To play this evocative work\, we welcome Philip Arkinstall\, Associate Principal Clarinet with the MSO. \nGeorge Gershwin composed his Cuban Overture in 1932 after holidaying there. You will recognise many Caribbean rhythms and native Cuban percussion themes featured in this overture. \nAnd of course\, we all know and love Porgy and Bess and West Side Story. We will revel in the American dream\, a culture of great Musicals and music that we can now enjoy outside the theatre. \nMark Shiell will present a pre-concert talk in the auditorium commencing 7.30pm. \nProgram: \nCopland – Fanfare for the Common Man\nGershwin arr Bennett – Porgy and Bess:Symphonic Picture\nCopland – Concerto for Clarinet\nGershwin – Cuban Overture\nBernstein – West Side Story: Symphonic Dances

SUMMARY:Winter Daydreams
DESCRIPTION:Zelman Symphony begins its 2016 season with a spectacular combination of Tchaikovsky Firsts. His thrilling first piano concerto\, once considered “unplayable”\, sits alongside his beautiful\, evocative and exciting first symphony. \nTchaikovsky’s first piano concerto is amongst the best known of all piano concertos and one of his most popular works. Hoang Pham\, one of Australia’s most exciting young musicians\,  plays the concerto he performed so brilliantly to win the 2013 Symphony Australia Young Performer of the Year Award. \nTchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 1\, Winter Daydreams\, is his earliest notable composition – in 1883\, he wrote that “although it is in many ways very immature\, yet fundamentally it has more substance and is better than many of my other more mature works.” \nMark Shiell will present a pre-concert talk in the auditorium commencing 7.30pm. \n\n\n\n\n
