SUMMARY:Speak Percussion: Pigeons
DESCRIPTION:Clay shooting—with percussionists in the firing lines.\nAnd… pull! \nPigeons is a clay shooting event\, but the birds are the musicians and pigeons are the ammo. Three robotic trap machines take centre stage. In unrelenting\, symphonic\, patterns\, they hurl hundreds of fluorescent clay targets at a wall of suspended\, resonant percussive objects. The musicians duck\, flap\, glide and slide among the projectiles\, in a frantic search for safety. Glorious music rings out—fragile\, violent\, poetic and heroic. It’s percussionist vs pigeon. Human vs machine. \nThe idea was hatched by Speak Percussion’s Co-Artistic Director Eugene Ughetti\, with a bunch of risk-taking collaborators who’ve been working to redefine the potential of percussion since the turn of the millennium.  Will their plan present a logical endpoint to our algorithmically massaged future? Or lead us on a path to broken bones? Either way\, it’ll be epic. \nSensory Warnings \nFlashing lights\, Moving lights\, Loud sounds. This performance contains heightened audio-visual content. There is unpredictable sound and visual projection throughout which may quickly change in volume\, tone\, brightness\, and colour. Sound sensitive audience members are encouraged to bring headphones. Earplugs available at the venue. There are no dominant light flashes or colour changes which occur more frequently than 3 per second. \nSpeak Percussion has shaped the sound of 21st century Australian percussion music through the creation and presentation of daring arts projects. SUMMARY:Omega Ensemble: Distant World
DESCRIPTION:The future of our planet in a world gone mad.\nLatvian composer Pēteris Vasks’ Piano Quartet from 2001 grapples with his familiar themes of a world detached from nature. Contrasting darkness and light\, it reflects the natural world\, and weaves in cherished bird songs. His music portrays a profound catharsis\, historical weight\, and a glimmer of hope for the future. \nA vibrant Australian voice\, Miriama Young’s interactive performance incorporates a soundscape of recordings by young people of personal places in nature\, merging past and present\, physical and metaphysical into a powerful artistic statement. \nWritten in response to devastating bushfires\, Tasmanian composer and saxophonist Jabra Latham’ Fire Music reflects anguish and renewal\, aiming to ‘embody the cyclical nature of life and fire.’ \nArvo Pärt Speigel im Speigel \nJabra Latham Fire Music \nPēteris Vasks Piano Quartet \nMiriama Young New Commission – World Premiere \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday 13 May 2025 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour 30 mins (no interval). SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia: Hollywood Songbook
DESCRIPTION:Signum Saxophone Quartet and Ali McGregor.\nThe musicians of the Signum Saxophone Quartet\, who won hearts across Australia on their debut tour\, return with a new collaborator—Ali McGregor\, the opera star turned cabaret queen. \nTogether\, they embark on a journey from Berlin to Hollywood\, stopping at a shadowy nightclub\, a Shakespearean tragedy\, a Broadway musical\, and even a Wild West rodeo\, before finally arriving somewhere over the rainbow. \nThe first half of the 20th century was a time of radical change—socially\, politically\, and artistically. While history books tell one version\, artists\, composers\, and performers offer another. As Musica Viva Australia reflects on 80 years of sharing these stories\, music takes us on a journey from moody monochrome to vibrant technicolour\, and from introspective darkness to blazing hope. \n★★★★★ ‘[Signum Saxophone Quartet] brought to bear a seemingly endless variety of tonal colour and effects. The sense of balance\, clarity and tone was exemplary.’ — Limelight \nPre and Post-Concert Talks \nEnrich your music experience with pre-concert and post-concert talks. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday 06 May 2025 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours 10 mins (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Erwan Keravec – 8 Pipers for Philip Glass + Nat Bartsch
DESCRIPTION:A musical odyssey that demands to be heard\, witnessed and felt with every sense.\nWith the saturated sonic textures of eight bagpipes\, 8 Pipers for Philip Glass invites audiences to immerse themselves in a world of haunting resonance and complex beauty. The powerful artistry of these French pipers\, led by Erwan Keravec and his captivating arrangements\, re-imagines some of Glass’ most visionary works. \nConsidered the master of French highland bagpipes\, Keravec\, alongside seven other pipers\, connect Glass’ modern compositions with ancient musical roots\, perfectly showcasing the raw\, expressive power of the bagpipe. \nTo open this Dynamic Double Set performance\, Melbourne Recital Centre’s 2024 Artist in Residence\, Nat Bartsch\, returns to the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall. Presenting a selection of works from her critically acclaimed new album Forever Changed\, before ultimately leading listeners into the Philip Glass exploration with her mesmerising performance of the composer’s Etude No.2. \nFrom Melbourne Recital Centre’s Marshall McGuire \n‘I first heard this extraordinary performance late at night in a club in Berlin in 2024. Spending an hour in the company of bagpipes in a small space was perhaps not up there on my list of must-haves\, but initial curiosity soon turned to intense amazement. This is music-making like you’ve never heard it before. These virtuoso Breton pipers take the music of Philip Glass and turn it into a swirling\, mesmerising\, intoxicating brew of chants and tunes and vibrations. \nThe crowd soon turned from initial curiosity to transfixed participants\, each wave of sound moving the audience emotionally and physically. We all emerged changed\, from a powerful\, unique\, beautiful and intense musical experience like no other. I look forward to sharing this experience with you\, as we immerse ourselves in this beautiful and intoxicating performance in the unparalleled acoustics of Elisabeth Murdoch Hall.’ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMonday 05 May 2025 – 7:30pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour 45 mins (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Matthias Goerne sings Winterreise with Daniil Trifonov
DESCRIPTION:Matthias Goerne reunites with GRAMMY® Award-winning pianist Daniil Trifonov for a one-night-only performance. \nWith Trifonov described as ‘a knockout’ (The Washington Post) and Goerne a ‘commanding vocalist’ (The New York Times)\, these titans of the classical world present an unforgettable rendition of Schubert’s masterpiece\, Winterreise. \nComposed in the final year of Schubert’s life\, this haunting song cycle ventures through a profoundly emotional winter landscape and draws listeners through expressive vocals intertwined with nuanced pianism. \nTransforming simple elements – a crow\, a frozen stream – into powerful metaphors for human experience\, Schubert’s expressive genius is on full display in this performance that’ll highlight Elisabeth Murdoch Hall’s reputation of being a vessel for unforgettable storytelling. \nMatthias Goerne baritone\nDaniil Trifonov piano \nTuesday April 1\, 7.30 \nMelbourne Recital Centre
