SUMMARY:Australian Chamber Orchestra: A Musical Awakening
DESCRIPTION:Experience the healing power of music\, directed by ACO Principal Cello Timo-Veikko Valve\, featuring recorder virtuoso Genevieve Lacey.\nMusic is visceral and vital. In A Musical Awakening\, we invite you to take a breath and lean into this program designed to nourish your soul. Directed by ACO Principal Cello Timo-Veikko Valve\, the Orchestra will be joined by friend and recorder virtuoso Genevieve Lacey\, whose mastery of this most elemental of instruments is unsurpassed. \nThe Australian Chamber Orchestra will explore the different ways music can heal\, culminating in Beethoven’s Holy Song of Thanksgiving\, composed after his recovery from a life-threatening illness. Beethoven was forever facing down adversity with music\, and this heartfelt masterpiece is filled with quiet joy and a deep gratitude for life and the chance to live it. \nMax Richter wrote his intimate On the Nature of Daylight after witnessing the suffering of the Iraq war\, and its beauty has resonated with filmmakers and fans as an antidote to tragedy. The ACO premiere a new work from Pulitzer-prize winning composer David Lang and enter Pēteris Vasks’ tranquil sound world with the lush warmth of Musica Serena. From a millennium earlier\, abbess Hildegard’s sublime songs speak directly to the human soul\, holy reflections that broke musical barriers then and remain potent today. Melody Eötvös’ Meraki embodies its title\, a Greek word which means to create with soul or love. And that is what music is all about. \nThis concert is for everyone and anyone who wants to experience healing\, renewal\, invigoration and enlightenment. \nThe Australian Chamber Orchestra is celebrating fifty years in 2025 and is one of the most acclaimed chamber orchestras in the world\, renowned for their inspired programming\, unrivalled virtuosity\, energy and individuality. SUMMARY:Musica Viva Australia: Mozart's Clarinet
DESCRIPTION:The Spirit of Invention.\nVienna\, 1785. Johann Friedrich Schink is blown away by a new work featuring the clarinet and basset horn. ‘Oh\, what a glorious effect it made – glorious and great\, excellent and sublime!’ he writes of Mozart’s Serenade ‘Gran Partita’. \nEighteenth-century Vienna was alive with musical inventions. The clarinet\, basset horn\, and fortepiano were expanding the possibilities for composers like Mozart and the young Ludwig van Beethoven. \nPerformers and early music scholars Nicola Boud\, Simon Cobcroft\, and Erin Helyard bring their infectious enthusiasm for 18th-century innovation to the much-loved chamber music of these trailblazing composers. \nTravel back to the future with three dynamic artists to hear these glorious works as if for the first time. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday 22 July 2025 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 2 hours (incl. interval). SUMMARY:Speak Percussion: Pigeons
DESCRIPTION:Clay shooting—with percussionists in the firing lines.\nAnd… pull! \nPigeons is a clay shooting event\, but the birds are the musicians and pigeons are the ammo. Three robotic trap machines take centre stage. In unrelenting\, symphonic\, patterns\, they hurl hundreds of fluorescent clay targets at a wall of suspended\, resonant percussive objects. The musicians duck\, flap\, glide and slide among the projectiles\, in a frantic search for safety. Glorious music rings out—fragile\, violent\, poetic and heroic. It’s percussionist vs pigeon. Human vs machine. \nThe idea was hatched by Speak Percussion’s Co-Artistic Director Eugene Ughetti\, with a bunch of risk-taking collaborators who’ve been working to redefine the potential of percussion since the turn of the millennium.  Will their plan present a logical endpoint to our algorithmically massaged future? Or lead us on a path to broken bones? Either way\, it’ll be epic. \nSensory Warnings \nFlashing lights\, Moving lights\, Loud sounds. This performance contains heightened audio-visual content. DESCRIPTION:The future of our planet in a world gone mad.\nLatvian composer Pēteris Vasks’ Piano Quartet from 2001 grapples with his familiar themes of a world detached from nature. Contrasting darkness and light\, it reflects the natural world\, and weaves in cherished bird songs. His music portrays a profound catharsis\, historical weight\, and a glimmer of hope for the future. \nA vibrant Australian voice\, Miriama Young’s interactive performance incorporates a soundscape of recordings by young people of personal places in nature\, merging past and present\, physical and metaphysical into a powerful artistic statement. \nWritten in response to devastating bushfires\, Tasmanian composer and saxophonist Jabra Latham’ Fire Music reflects anguish and renewal\, aiming to ‘embody the cyclical nature of life and fire.’ \nArvo Pärt Speigel im Speigel \nJabra Latham Fire Music \nPēteris Vasks Piano Quartet \nMiriama Young New Commission – World Premiere \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday 13 May 2025 – 7:00pm \n\n\nDuration: 1 hour 30 mins (no interval).
