DESCRIPTION:Christian Tetzlaff is a musical shape-shifter. The Frankfurt-based violinist has the ability to immerse himself entirely in the world of the composer whose music he is recreating. In this concert it’s JS Bach’s solo violin works\, at the heart of the virtuoso violin repertoire. \nThe dense harmonic layering\, complex fugue and quicksilver dance movements of Bach’s Sonata No.3 in C major have inspired many homages\, including the First Sonata from Eugene Ysaÿe’s set of six\, and the tough but dazzling solo sonata of Béla Bartók. \nThis is a precious opportunity to hear all three.

Haydn’s op 77 no 1 is the grand\, crowning achievement of a life inventing\, exploring and perfecting the genre. Written ten years later\, in Beethoven’s middle period\, the Serioso quartet is all fire and crystal whilst remaining compositionally one of the strictest and most tightly structured works he ever wrote.  \nIn Bartók’s Quartet no 5 we hear the master of the 20th century quartet adding another dimension of emotional depth to his already highly sharpened\, perfectly constructed middle period works. Ever since its first performance in 1935\, it has been hailed as one of the ultimate challenges for string quartets.

He became completely enamoured by Baroque repertoire while still a student at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. He is a current beneficiary of the international Jumpstart Jr Foundation which provides him with an original Francesco Ruggeri violin made in Cremona in 1675. \nA highly regarded laureate in numerous European competitions over the last eight years\, his beautiful voice will shine in between his performances of the exciting violin concertos of Antonio Vivaldi.
